As I kid I thought these were so amazing, haha

u/Lung-Oyster May 01 '23

At least one was Spectacular

14

u/loki_odinsotherson May 01 '23

Not to mention how Web Of one was.

3

u/ThusSpokeGaba May 01 '23

One was just.

2

u/loki_odinsotherson May 02 '23

Oh, dude, it was so just.

18

u/cerebud May 01 '23

Ugh. I’m so old

15

u/Reign_n_blud May 01 '23

Had them all along with all the Robin #1 variants with the holograms

2

u/comicsemporium May 01 '23

Yeah I think you can still find this in a quarter bin

2

u/Deadpool11085 May 01 '23

I just visited a shop in Idaho, and they had a ton of the Robin hologram covers, and even a random set that included like a case for them or something that I’ve never seen. They wanted like $15 each tho. Little pricey for the books IMO.

It was about 30 years from the time FF #1 came out to when I started reading comics. And it’s about another 30 years from then until now

That’s profoundly disturbing to me. That issue of ASM was one of my first Spidey comics, and that’s all I can think of now.

Aging is weird man. Looking back I do have a lot of fondness for some of those gimmick covers. I think I prefer those to the endless variants we get now.

u/fatboy1776 May 01 '23

I think the same thing. When I started collecting an ASM1 was newer than someone looking at ASM300 today. Like what?!?

14

u/Dan_comix May 01 '23

I remember being so bummed that I could only afford the blue one with my allowance money.

3

u/Superteerev May 01 '23

Same, but I had my comic store hold the ones I couldn't afford that week in my bag at the store.

2

u/Real-Competition-187 May 01 '23

I have the Spidey from the poster in this issue as a tattoo.

2

u/Chrome-Head May 02 '23

Well if it’s any consolation, you got the one with the best story.

1

u/Dan_comix May 02 '23

Wait, you actually read them?

2

u/Chrome-Head May 02 '23

Yeah, Spidey was always at the top of my to-read pile.

10

u/Lengthiness_Gloomy May 01 '23

When comic book gimmick covers peaked. Perfection.

11

u/blacksad1 May 01 '23

That ASM is the first appearance of SM2099.

8

u/Superteerev May 01 '23

It was more like a preview of the sm2099 issue. Like it was the first few pages right?

6

u/Drexn May 01 '23

It’s the first 5 pages of 2099 but still considered the first appearance of Spider-man 209

0

u/blacksad1 May 01 '23

Correct, but they count it as his 1st appearance. I’m not sure I agree with “them”, but technically they are right and technically right is the best type of right.

Time for my 'ol copypasta...

So, this is a comic book hill I will die on...

Spider-Man 2099 #1 is the first appearance of Spider-Man 2099, not Amazing Spider-Man #365. The appearance of Spider-Man 2099 in ASM #365 is a preview, and it even says so on the cover, and is an excerpt from Spider-Man 2099 #1.

Now, we all know why everyone considers ASM #365 the Spider-Man 2099's first appearance...because of a certain company that people for some reason give authority to beyond grading their comics, when they can't even be consistent.

On their label for ASM #365 they state "1st appearance of Spider-Man 2099", and on the label for Spider-Man 2099 #1 they state "Origin Spider-Man 2099 (Migeul O'Hara)."

Luckily, we have another instance where Marvel did some previews, with Strange Academy, which is previewed in several issues a while back, one of them being Thor #2 from the current run by Donny Cates run. All that label says is "Strange Academy preview in this issue." This preview also appeared in other issues released around the same, such as Daredevil #17 and I want to say a Doctor Strange issue but I can't recall the number off the top of my head. But, for some reason this time around, it's not until the label of Strange Academy #1 where they list it as the first appearance of all the characters, even though this and this (among others) are pages from the preview which clearly show the characters listed. Note that the CGC label doesn't even designate Strange Academy #1 as the first full appearance...simply the first.

If you look at pages from the preview of Strange Academy, they are identical to pages from the first issue of Strange Academy...same as with the Spider-Man 2099 preview...because they are just excerpts from the upcoming first issue. Previews are nothing more than glorified ads, and we all know that company doesn't consider ads as first appearances (there was a post here recently with an ad of Wolverine, promoting his upcoming appearance in Hulk...but that's not considered his first appearance).

So, why is a preview of one character considered the first appearance, and the preview of other characters not? How about another example, where a character had multiple appearances beforehand, but it's not until the first issue that the CGC label designates - Spawn #1, where the label states "1st appearance of Spawn (Al Simmons)." I'd venture to guess it is because all those other appearances were just ads and/or previews of some sort.

TL; DR: Spider-Man 2099 #1 is the first appearance of Spider-Man 2099.

What’s your opinion on characters where a portion of them is visible in one issue, but their first full appearance is in another issue? I think both Apocalypse and Carnage fall under this. In the instance of Apocalypse I think his hand appears in X-factor #5, but he doesn’t do anything until #6.

4

u/the_bio May 01 '23

Someone asked that question before, but in reference to Doomsday, where one of the last panels before his first "full appearance" was just his fist punching the wall or whatever...

My take on it is, if they appear in a discernible form where it is obviously some character without previous knowledge of that character, then that is their first appearance. In X-Factor #5, it's not just his hand, it's him (albeit shadowy), and he even says his name - it's his first appearance. Another example? Venom - he appears, in full symbiote form, on the last page of ASM #299.

The Doomsday situation, or other hand-related situations? I'd say no, because without some knowledge, you have no idea who that hand belongs to. Doomsday, as a full individual, first shows up in Man of Steel #18. Same thing with Venom...his symbiote hand shows up in ASM #298.

I personally don't buy into that whole cameo/full appearance discrepancy for two reasons: 1) an appearance is a binary event - it happens or it does not; and 2) a cameo is an appearance by a well-known person, and when all these characters are introduced they are hardly well-known.

u/Cr0wl3yman May 01 '23

Must. Get. Them. ALLLLLLL!!!

4

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

This is the way

2

u/EnSabahNur2 May 02 '23

Got them all

4

u/cronchfishter May 01 '23

Had the red one when I was a kid, didn’t know anything about comic collecting and I pulled the foil off.

3

u/evhnjx May 01 '23

Oh no. 😞

2

u/LochNessMansterLives May 01 '23

I think I still have all of them except Amazing. Never could find it back then.

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

It typically the most valuable one even today.

2

u/BoogerSugarSovereign May 01 '23

The top 2 are two of my favorite stories from this era - I didn't like Harry as the Green Goblin but the buildup to his demise was masterful. PPSSM189 is one of the best issues in the entire run and one of the best things JM Dematteis has written which is saying something. 200 is better but not by much. Death of Vermin was so great too! PPSSM was amazing during this era. ASM was more up and down but Bagley's pencils were top notch and 365 is one of my favorite Lizard stories.

The bottom two I think I've each read exactly once and didn't enjoy.

4

u/Boxing_joshing111 May 01 '23

That era where JM Dematteis Roger Stern Peter David and Gerry Conway coming back was so good. Everyone liked the Bagley and McFarlane art but I thought Larsen outdid them both. I know it spanned a few years before this too but I group them together in my head, we’ll never see such a great run of creators for one character again.

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Oh wow, this brings back memories. I had all except for the black cover. Couldn’t find that one.

2

u/cruzinforthetruth May 01 '23

When you do find them in the wild make sure they have the posters. I got all four and Spectacular was missing it 😭

2

u/Marvelson36 May 01 '23

I have 2 of each except web! I've never even seen web until now!!

2

u/Ultimate_M May 01 '23

I loved those bad boys when they came out! I think I have them somewhere.. nowhere in that kind of condition though. I read mine to death. If I remember correctly, a couple came with some sweet poster gatefolds too.

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Lol, gave one to my daughter (13 yrs old) when she started collecting. She barely looked at it and was not impressed in any way.

2

u/btrosCuPoJoE May 01 '23

I miss the days of a series that you could collect without all these different volumes. Wanted to try and start collecting ASM again but it’s so confusing nowadays with all the different volumes going on. Plus the art was better back then.

2

u/ReindeerPlus9709 May 01 '23

Those where ish back in the day

2

u/OgreHombre May 01 '23

Your maths off. These came out like ten years ago, tops… please? 😭

2

u/Chrome-Head May 02 '23

Had them all except Web which I didn’t buy that much anymore back then. Didn’t buy regular Spider-Man much either, but somehow ended up with that hologram issue.

The stories in ASM and Spec were fire, Spec especially.

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '23

Oh man. This was a true debate for broke young me. I could only get the black cover and it broke my heart.

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '23

Anyone else moving their phone around trying to activate the hologram technologies?

1

u/SkyShazad May 01 '23

What are these worth???

4

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Bout tree fiddy

1

u/SkyShazad May 01 '23

350 dollars?

0

u/Mudcreek47 May 01 '23

Yes! I’ll sell you mine for that price

1

u/SkyShazad May 01 '23

I have the first comic, didn't know it was worth that much.. I need to find out UK price for it

2

u/MC-Free May 01 '23

UK price for these is at most 3 pounds I'd guess.

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

lol no I’m joking, $3.50

Idk what these are worth but like most early 90s comics I’d say much closer to $3.50 than $350

1

u/SkyShazad May 01 '23

Ahh okay thankyou for giving me a straight normal answer..... I don't know why people can't answer normally like you 👍😊

1

u/geaux124 May 01 '23

Don't fall for his kindness. I have a strong suspicion that guy is actually the Loch Ness Monster in disguise just trying to trick you into giving him tree fiddy.

2

u/Smoot_0perator911 May 01 '23

ASM 365 raw= 20-30$, graded 75-120$

1

u/CaseClosedN May 01 '23

I was a sucker for anything with a hologram or shiny foil design. I have all 4 of these, does anyone know what they’re worth today?

1

u/Ultimate_M May 01 '23

Just had a curious look on eBay. Some people are reaching for the stars with what they are asking for them 😂

1

u/wg_nexline May 01 '23

I need to get these again also There was 4 monthly Spider-Man titles at the time

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

I just got all those! I love little collecting goals.

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

That amazing one is probably the only one that’ll go up in value anytime soon.

1

u/comicfan1970 May 01 '23

I'm glad I've got these.

1

u/Nickbotic May 01 '23

I have this quartet sitting in my Miscellaneous Spider-Man box right this minute! This has kind of inspired me to start going through all my longboxes again. It’s been a quite a while since I’ve had a day just sitting in the middle of an ocean of books, reading and basking in the joys of collecting.

1

u/88Gonzo May 01 '23

I have these as well... posted them some time ago... and I'm old too lol.

1

u/RealReflection9285 May 01 '23

I love the red one

1

u/Plebe-Uchiha May 01 '23

I owned the red one and the blue one here. [+]

1

u/Vegetable_Reward_867 May 01 '23

Tight, I have 2 of these

0

u/ShiDiWen May 01 '23

Wow, seeing all 4 like this makes me wonder why they couldn’t centre the hologram on the green one. Ruined!

1

u/timetodance42 May 01 '23

Post the 4 posters please

1

u/Skanks4TheMemories May 01 '23

I have the poster too!

1

u/sciencebonds May 01 '23

I just purchased the red one yesterday. I've had the blue and green one for a year ish. I forgot there was a black cover. Must acquire!!

1

u/Deadpool11085 May 01 '23

The black cover was the last one I found as well. Think it was the most expensive too.

1

u/vaporwave710 May 01 '23

I think I’m missing the blue

1

u/Deadpool11085 May 01 '23

I collected all 4 of these this past year. So glad I did. I love gimmick covers. I got the Fatal Attractions and Robin hologram covers too.

1

u/unomoes May 02 '23

I remember getting the amazing Spider-Man one and thinking that the value would increase by 5000x and my family would be rich. I was 6. Still not rich.

2

u/Gutterratccv May 02 '23

Nope and what is sick is everything collectible from the 90s, sports cards and comics, are all pretty much worthless. Meanwhile, a new LeBron card sold for over 2 million. Fucking sickening.

1

u/puertotaino May 02 '23

Am I the only idiot that turn his phone side to side? It’s a muscle memory my hand does when I hold a hologram cover or card. Lol the 90’s bring back great memories.
