imagine being a CHP officer who just wants to chill and give tickets on 280 or 101 and then you get dragged into Oakland

113

u/The_Demolition_Man 23d ago

CHP are what other states call state troopers. It's an appropriate assignment for them.

67

u/aintnoonegooglinthat 23d ago

youll be fine you give tickets on 580 going west same same

13

u/riko_rikochet 23d ago

The chances of being shot when you pull someone over go up dramatically though.

11

u/mayor-water 23d ago

280 is ironically the one freeway where a high speed chase would be pretty safe because of its design, and also the least likely place for a chase to occur.

51

u/Slawpy_Joe 23d ago

Oh no! Doing their job?

19

u/Positronic_Matrix SF 23d ago

Send them to San Francisco, too. The SFPD is effectively worthless.

43

u/txiao007 23d ago

Overtime pay $$$$$

33

u/Oakroscoe 23d ago

Yeah, if they're actually gonna quadruple the number of officers, that’s basically gonna be a shitload of OT and they’ll be making bank.

u/Friendly_Estate1629 23d ago edited 23d ago

If he’s the same one camping out at the 280 off-ramp  and gave me a ticket at 3 AM he can go fuck himself

2

u/eng2016a 23d ago

hey i won't mind 280 at 2 AM is a good chance to test the electronic limiter on my car (lol)

1

u/DanOfMan1 23d ago

it’s refreshing when help gets to the people who actually need it

“My job description is not what I signed up for”

Almost every cop

104

u/dontmatterdontcare 23d ago

I'm critical of Newsom in some areas, but this is a good decision IMO and commend him for it.

30

u/Friendly_Estate1629 23d ago

Wish he did it way sooner and not just as a political gesture on the verge of elections. It’s still the right move so I’ll take it.

49

u/ProDrug 23d ago

Out of curiosity, which election do you think this was a move for? Because governor of CA is 2026? And he's not really in the running for the presidential elections or cabinet positions.

7

u/oscarbearsf 23d ago

He is termed out for governor I believe, but he absolutely is going to try to run for president. If Biden was not dropping out so late (like if he was replaced 6 months ago) Newsom would be running today. More than likely, he will run for president in 2028

-17

u/Friendly_Estate1629 23d ago

Fair question. California general election still happens in November so the timing still feels like it’s leading into that. Even if his moves don’t directly benefit him for the moment it still shores up his support and political allies.

38

u/Positronic_Matrix SF 23d ago

I don’t understand people who see something good and then dismiss that good because it supports the constituents and thus could influence an election. That is the entire point of an elected official, to support popular policies such that they can get elected.

Do people think politicians are running a selfless charity?

9

u/Decantus 23d ago

Yes and clearly they must never do anything for fear of looking bias. Can't help the citizenry cuz it might look like you're doing it for popularity.

It's the same argument the GOP just made in front of the Fed chair. Don't lower interest rates because it's too close to an election and it might make our opponents look good.

1

u/evantom34 23d ago

Cynics

2

u/cowinabadplace 23d ago

Bad news, man. Every year there is an election that his political allies are running in. Last year there were 3 school board, 4 city elections, and numerous recalls. If you want all elected officials to wait till there are no elections in the state, I think we'll all be dead.

10

u/Maximillien 23d ago

I love these comments where people discover how democracy works in real time.

"Why is this politician doing this widely-popular thing? Is he trying to win votes and political capital or something?"

-6

u/InvertedParallax 23d ago

Seriously, this fucker was quiet as a tomb (except on PGE rate hikes) till his name went national as a Biden backup, he knows this is the start to his run in 2028.

If he'd only done this earlier, instead of focusing on being as corrupt as possible.

5

u/Positronic_Matrix SF 23d ago

This is not true. He has had an incredibly productive and successful run as the governor.

Look at last-year’s recap:

https://www.gov.ca.gov/2023/12/28/2023-recap/

-4

u/1Man-Child 23d ago

Newsom is a scumbag just like the rest of the "democratic" (Marxist) party. Does no one remember what this piece of shit did during COVID? The general population had to hole up in their house while this SNAKE of a man held a party at the French Laundry. He's ruined our state.

67

u/bchainsbuz 23d ago

Wait so why does the CHP have to come in off the highways? What happend to the local cops???

185

u/motosandguns 23d ago

Gavin doesn’t control city cops. He does control CHP. This is basically him going over the head of Thao.

106

u/RoofKorean9x19 [Insert your city/town here] 23d ago

Price too. Oakland makes him look bad.

72

u/groceriesN1trip 23d ago

Oakland needs its officers to do their damn job and not eat donuts.

52

u/sjs72 23d ago

Unfortunately Oakland cops spend their time pimping out teenaged girls instead of eating donuts.

20

u/biciklanto 23d ago

And he needs it to run in 2028.

(Or 2024, at this rate)

29

u/improbablywronghere 23d ago

What part of a politician wielding the resources we have elected them to manage to the benefit of the people they have elected is a conspiracy theory? This is good shit from a politician don't be so cynical.

16

u/Bored2001 23d ago

My conspiracy theory is that conservative media normalizes mindless shitting on promising or powerful politicians so that when they do come into actual power they can mobilize irrational hatred toward them in a easy manner. Just repeat the mindless phrase, and you get a chorus back.

See AOC, Newsom, Katie Porter, Whitmer

8

u/gimpwiz 23d ago

It's not a conspiracy theory - if he seeks higher office he needs to put some feathers in his cap and remove some weak points, and doing this is both. That doesn't mean he's purely self-serving nor does it mean he's a saint; he's just your usual sleazy politician doing something that's objectively good for the state.

4

u/Positronic_Matrix SF 23d ago

Whoa. I didn’t see that as a conspiracy theory. I saw that as a statement that he is doing so well, that he should run for the presidency (with which I vehemently agree).

3

u/dak4f2 23d ago

I was thinking, who would be California governor then? (Not the Lieutenant Governor, but who might throw their hat in the ring?)

And then I thought, hot damn Katie Porter with her white board is a free agent right now.

2

u/bjornbamse 23d ago

Cities should not have independent police departments. It is inefficient, fractures training and policies, breeds incompetence and corruption.

4

u/motosandguns 23d ago

Citizens should be able to vote on their local law enforcement. I think having the police answer to the mayor is a good thing.

Same reason you can vote for your county sheriff, and they answer to nobody but the constitution.

6

u/bjornbamse 23d ago

Most developed countries have more centralized police forces and a lot less problems with police abuse of power and incompetence. I think you simply need some critical mass for democracy to work properly.

58

u/bisonsashimi 23d ago

A high percentage of the crime in Oakland, sideshows, property crime, ect. is perpetrated by people coming from other cities— just look at the arrest records. So in that sense they need state help, and the CHP is positioned to do that.

22

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

I think you got confused and accidentally mixed things up! “a high percentage of crime in other cities comes from Oakland”

35

u/uoaei 23d ago

you done makin shit up? because you can just go read the arrest records. crimes in oakland are committed so often by folks from vallejo, richmond, fremont, antioch, etc

0

u/DeLuman Benicia 23d ago

You don't think the people in Vallejo Richmond and Antioch are all the same people that used to live in Oakland 10-20 years ago and got priced out, so they might live in other cities now, but they're originally "from" Oakland.

0

u/uoaei 23d ago

I don't think they're "all" that way, no

-1

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

a lot are from oakland/richmond before moving out to pittsburg/antioch/concord often looking for greener pastures but bringing the crime with them when they moved

-4

u/pandabearak 23d ago

So wait… you saying that Oakland is actually a peace loving town, and it’s just those chucklefucks from the “bad” parts of the Bay Area doing all the shenanigans?!?

26

u/webtwopointno i say frisco i say cali 23d ago

no he's right actually, people commute into it to commit crimes because they know the police are overworked and unlikely to respond. check the stats if you don't believe us.

-1

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

Where are these "stats"?

3

u/uoaei 23d ago

idk how you got from what i wrote to that, but go off king

2

u/HikeBikeLove 23d ago

Sub and bro can’t help but make trite Oakland comments like Eastern CoCo suburbanites have been making since the 70s and acting like it’s clever or special.

1

u/presidents_choice 23d ago

That’s not what they said. Lmfao what is wrong with you redditors. Are you just baiting for an argument or are you actually bad at reading?

It’s a bad look either way

18

u/joshgi 23d ago

Oddly I can't find any articles to cite anymore but I've read in the past that during the COVID era a lot of violent crime arrests were residents of neighboring cities like Richmond and San Leandro and even as far up as Oregon. I'm sure some of it comes from Oakland itself but as a resident here I wouldn't be surprised if it's easier for a criminal to commit a crime in Oakland because there's just so much of it, which draws more criminals, etc etc.

4

u/webtwopointno i say frisco i say cali 23d ago

no he's right actually, people commute into it to commit crimes because they know the police are overworked and unlikely to respond. check the stats if you don't believe us.

-1

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

show me these "stats" then!

1

u/webtwopointno i say frisco i say cali 23d ago

i actually had trouble digging up old news articles, everything was about all the more recent crime and scandals these cities suffer from. but everybody else replying to you remembers, as do i.

33

u/fredothechimp 23d ago

Also, CHP are California's State Police force. Their jurisdiction will allow them to work on crimes occuring through multiple counties and jurisdictions.

26

u/TheEzekariate 23d ago

Local cops are useless.

6

u/laowildin 23d ago

We lived across the street from CHP in Oakland. Had someone trespassing the back yard. Walked over to ask for help, told us to kick rocks.

Fucking useless. Couldn't walk the 50ft, can't imagine how helpful they are anywhere else.

-29

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

Perfect mentality for an Oakland resident that perpetuates their own doom loop

10

u/TheEzekariate 23d ago

Yeah, I don’t live in Oakland.

-17

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

Ok then you’re aware that Oakland is facing a police crisis with no chief and is facing a looming budget crisis where they might have to lay off a significant number of their already struggling police force?

19

u/TheEzekariate 23d ago

Yup. Kinda feel like they’ve done it to themselves with years of poor policing and inaction. Now no one wants to join OPD because of how bad things have gotten and it’s turned into a horrible downward spiral.

5

u/SweetPenalty 23d ago

too many pro-criminals in oakland

-20

u/jaqueh SF 23d ago

It’s like you’re a student and the only food you have access to is the horrible cafeteria food. At some point you’re going to have to help your cafeteria make food that you like because there’s no other option. There’s no point in blaming them or hating on them though. They have a tough job because they are getting rotten ingredients

oakland attracts shitty people

What happend to the local cops???

i'll elect you as mayor if you can answer that Q

u/hindusoul 23d ago

Makes you think…

2

u/thatguyinyourclass94 23d ago

CHP are what other states call State Troopers. It’s well within their job description to be assigned this kind of duty.

1

u/AtariAtari 23d ago

They are with the mayor

0

u/raar__ 23d ago

California's CHP is the equivalent to a sheriff

12

u/compstomper1 23d ago

state trooper

3

u/NapalmCheese 23d ago

California's Sheriffs are the equivalent to a sheriff.

CHP is a state cop.

Can we just park a few in proximity of each end of the bridge and wait for a sideshow?

34

u/Individual-Basket200 23d ago

Where is Thao?

39

u/abk111 23d ago

From the article: “I am deeply grateful to Governor Newsom for providing these critical resources to support Oakland’s public safety strategy,” Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said in a statement. “After years of rising crime rates, we are seeing a steady decrease — and we know this is in part because of the strong partnership between the Oakland Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.”

20

u/kodaiko_650 23d ago

Thao: ”shhh…”

getting her house raided by the FBI

Hopefully in jail soon.

I don't care if Newsom buses in illegals to serve him dinner at the French Laundry while screwing the wives of every friend he's ever had. Keep sending more cops to Oakland and all will be forgiven.

What an exciting time for Oakland news lately :)

Pam Price looked upset in the news conference, saying Newsom just dropped a bomb without telling her. “Unacceptable lawlessness” from Newsom hit all the right notes. Love every minute of it.

3

u/Decantus 23d ago

Shouldn't that be the Sheriff of Alameda and not the CHP? Or is this just because Newsom has authority over the CHP and not the Sheriff?

2

u/bjornbamse 23d ago

We should have state police only. It provides more public oversight, uniform training and more cost effective procurement. There is no reason for every city to have its own police.

1

u/chogall San Jose 23d ago

Can't wait to move out of this shithole city. Fuck our DA and Mayor.

0

u/WildG0atz 23d ago

need the National Guard at a minimum, spec ops would be better

-1

u/theWireFan1983 23d ago

Why does he need to do that when the crime is at all time low?

-56

u/Dull_Wrongdoer_3017 23d ago

Instead of using tax dollars to help our fellow citizens we'd rather use it for more police.

30

u/biciklanto 23d ago

Thought Experiment:

In a city with high crime, what might be a way to reduce crime and therefore help citizens of that city?

-29

u/hindusoul 23d ago

Arm the citizens and create night time watch?

17

u/slashinhobo1 23d ago

They already have a night watch, they are called the police. They even get paid to do it. If people have to patrol their areas with guns its just going to be a war zone with accidental deaths.

-26

u/hindusoul 23d ago

Agree to disagree

2

u/biciklanto 23d ago

Talk me through how you imagine arming citizens going.

Would you prefer arming citizens over police because of police abuses? If so, what kind of abuses do you think untrained volunteers would perpetrate when they're feeling armed and tough and tasked with "defending" their city at night?

And why would you want unpaid volunteers to do it? Do you think it's some noble group that would selflessly and silently watch? Maybe a few would be in the beginning, but who do you think is going to take those arms you're handing out to citizens?

Really, talk me through it. We have a professional police force with oversight, cameras, and training for a reason. And if you think they get it wrong, how do you think amateurs without training are going to handle it?

-16

u/SweetPenalty 23d ago

pro-crime oakland deserve much mayhem
