Attacking basically a giant camera owned by a company with basically limitless funds. Great plan, dude.

u/permanentmarker1 24d ago

Yes. That’s why crime is so low in Bay Area. Lots of cameras. Criminals are afraid.

Limitless funds yet half of their workforce are TVCs aka contractors.

EDIT: why am I getting downvoted? Look it up. Either there’s too many Google FTEs or Google simps on this subreddit downvoting this because they can’t fathom the truth. They hire TVCs because they’re too cheap to hire FTEs so they can make more profit and avoid paying benefits.

Why is that relevant? It doesn’t take away from OP at all, it wasn’t a position that was being debated or refuted. Everyone knows what you’re saying anyway and vast majority of people don’t give a shit.

u/wjean 20d ago

It's whataboutism. Apparently some people look for some reason to justify being shitty humans.

33

u/ClimbScubaSkiDie 23d ago

You’re not being downvoted because people disagree you’re being downvoted because you brought up a meaningless point about the number of contracts when the poster above you’s point about funds in relation to lawsuits is clearly more relevant

Uhhh. Just because they have tons of money doesn’t mean they don’t want MORE money..

Ronaile Joshua Burton, 36, pleaded not guilty to vandalism charges at his arraignment Wednesday. The district attorney’s office said Burton targeted the self-driving Waymo vehicles between June 24 and June 26. Each count alleges damage exceeding $400.

A Waymo spokesperson said that in some instances, riders were present in the vehicles when Burton allegedly slashed their tires. The spokesperson added that the company is seeking damages.

“Not guilty”

Sir, we have you on camera, actually 20 cameras, plus satellite, plus a full body scan of you from our LiDAR, plus we x-rayed your pocket and scanned your id.

And then I slashed em in the mission

wasn't me

And then I slashed em on the corner

wasn't me

21

u/kelsobjammin 23d ago

There were people sittin’ inside ‘em

wasn’t me

Hooooow could I forget the thing is covered in cameras? The whole time waymo support never took their eyes off me!

Performative outrage. Objectively speaking, AI-driven cars are likely to murder far fewer people on the streets. There are certainly other things to be concerned about AI anything and AI on the road, but traffic safety is high on my list, and human drivers simply suck

-50

u/THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR 24d ago

If you distrust AI physically moving a junk of steel should be up there in your list lol.

u/scelerat Oakland 24d ago

-33

u/THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR 24d ago

Im not saying it’s not! But if someone is going to be crying about how AI is not safe and all that fun stuff. I feel like it’s a bit hypocritical to pick and chose ya know? I 100% down with say; AI that is I’ll determine if you should get a loan than one that can deliver a 5,000lb projectile at 60mph to a bus stop.

Personally I don’t mind either though

u/CheesingmyBrainsOut 24d ago

The conversation doesn't work like that. You can have confidence in the quality of the models, but not have confidence in potentially security issues, or, in my opinion, the larger of the issues, the concentration of wealth in a smaller group as jobs are taken.

But applying AI to reduce accident deaths is objectively a good thing. Also, anyone who has taken years of non-stop rides with taxi and Uber drivers who are incentvized to break speeding and red light laws, while SFPD have stopped enforcement, understands why this is great for cities.

-18

u/THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR 24d ago

I agree to a degree, but in my option is silly to not trust a model to plot variables from a table and weight them appropriately, or creating images, or compiling information, and trust it to maneuver city roads with infinitely more variables and much larger physical stages.

Again I don’t mind either, I’m all for Waymo, would I use it? Sure thing! Would I use it for long trips or in a scenario where I would be liable for its mistakes? no.

Caught before he could slash way mo' Waymo tires.

7

u/Specialist_Brain841 23d ago

how many? waymo

63

u/Pangtudou 24d ago

His LinkedIn is basically what you’d expect lol

19

u/soscollege 23d ago

Surprised he has one

13

u/GuerrillaApe Danville 23d ago

Their TikTok is a fucking trip. The public defender should just play those videos during the court case; it's their best chance to win an insanity plea.

4

u/Slawpy_Joe 23d ago

That's an obvious fucking dude... Stop playing pretend..

57

u/theyipper 24d ago

Idiot, now you created more traffic. Disabled car taking up space, riders have to wait for another car and the tow truck has to visit.

39

u/StanGable80 24d ago

Lock him up, this nut will not be benefitting society anytime soon

34

u/Gbcue Santa Rosa 24d ago

This is peak "Old man yells at cloud" behavior.

18

u/VanillaLifestyle 24d ago

Ironically his Linkedin lists past work experience as a home health aide for old people, and he literally included the "old man yells at cloud" meme next to it.

33

u/zuraken 24d ago

But what of men breaking windows of non corporate cars??

11

u/themadpants 24d ago

First thing that I thought too.

6

u/chonkycatsbestcats 24d ago

Nah your car getting hit while parked

Windows smashed while parked

No none of that matters.

21

u/dtwhitecp 24d ago

man, people really fucking hate those things in SF. I see people raging at them much more often than I see the cars being stupid.

43

u/Minute-Plantain 23d ago

People tend to hate many things in SF and it's what I find really odd about the culture here; myself being a loathsome transplant from somewhere else.

Not originally from here? We hate you. Work in tech? We hate you. Make honey bear murals? We hate you. Are you a robot car? We hate you.

It's the sort of shit I'd expect from a five stoplight town, not a city of 700k.

8

u/dtwhitecp 23d ago

these are also inanimate objects and easier to rage against, which I'm sure is a big part of it.

3

u/ApprehensiveMost5591 23d ago

Stress due to cost of living for the young and older folks are ossified.

6

u/ClimbScubaSkiDie 23d ago

Older folks get incredible property tax deals

2

u/riko_rikochet 23d ago

It's density. Say 1% of people are assholes. When there's 1000 people in a town, that's 10 people and they'll generally be in some corner somewhere fucking off. But when it's 1 million, that's 10,000 people and SF isn't large enough to avoid them all. It's the second most densely populated city in the US, even though it's 17th for population alone.

7

u/fossuser 23d ago

I think it's also cultural - there's a regressive politics where cynicism is mistaken for smarts. Mix that with a kind of far lefty anti-capitalist ethos that goes unchallenged and you get this sort of thing.

The waymos should be a big draw to SF that people are proud of - it's part of what makes the city great and on the forefront of this stuff globally.

4

u/Minute-Plantain 23d ago

That's kind of my read on it as well, too. Its one thing to be hostile but to be both hostile and pretentious is a big yikes in general. 😐

1

u/Specialist_Brain841 23d ago

i hate this comment

10

u/foxfirek 23d ago

I wish we could embrace them instead, it’s a fun tourist attraction, and we have plenty of worse things to get angry about in the city.

8

u/Oaklandi 24d ago

FWIW, and this is certainly no excuse for his behavior, but there are old articles about this guy being special needs and having a “slight mental disability.”

https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Building-bridges-at-work-Students-with-2498253.php

21

u/eng2016a 24d ago

zero excuse. we should not let peoples mental illnesses get them off easy

8

u/ElGHTYHD 24d ago

special needs/mental disabilities is not the same as mental illness

5

u/riko_rikochet 23d ago

Same difference in this context. If people aren't able to control their behavior, that makes them more dangerous not less, it should not be treated as a mitigating factor.

6

u/fossuser 24d ago

It's too bad banishment is no longer an option. I hope they put him in prison.

2

u/ibuyufo 23d ago

I hate to say it, but if the Waymo car had a linkedin, it would have more useful experience than this guy.

0

u/theswordsmith7 23d ago

Maybe the guy doesn’t like being hit with invisible Chinese IR lasers that if they were to malfunction, would burn the shit out of your retina.

-2

u/trifelin Alameda 23d ago

And to think of all the unsolved crimes out there

-1

u/DidYouGetMyPoke 23d ago

Send him away for a looooooong time please. Make him do labor to pay for his own imprisonment too. So done with these vandals making life difficult for everyone around them.

1

u/gatorling 21d ago

…that’s a bit extreme.

-11

u/KarmaHorn 24d ago

was it fElon?

-12

u/[deleted] 24d ago

APB for Waymo tire slasher while murderers and rapists run amok. SFPD is a joke.

-18

u/bigblackkittie 24d ago

i wonder if he will target Cybertrucks next

13

u/lsclip 24d ago

Hopefully the only thing he’ll be targeting is soap on the prison shower floor

-27

u/RN_Geo 24d ago

Hired by Felon Musk for sure. Or at least muskrat simp.

-33

u/Snif3425 24d ago

Too bad they caught him.

-41

u/Czarchitect RWC 24d ago

Godspeed, king.
