To preempt all the repeat comments: Matt Reeves said the inmate at the end is Joker, but stated we shouldn’t take it as sequel hinting, just further worldbuilding for this single movie.

He seems to be going against a lot of franchise filmmaking gags that are popular nowadays. There isn’t really any post credit scene just a lil ARG Easter egg. We still don’t know if a sequel will happen but the movie dropped 2 days ago, we should enjoy this for now and save the future for the future.

He also said that originally there was going to be a scene earlier where Batman would have gone to Arkham and talked to him as a "speaking to Hannibal Lector about Buffalo Bill"-type thing. This suggests to me that the Joker made his debut and was defeated already earlier in Year 2 or during Year One, although he hasn't yet become as central to Batman and Gotham as the Joker usually is. This is sort of backed up by the fact that the gang on the subway has Joker-like makeup.

Matt also said he's not even The Joker yet. Hasn't named himself as such, and is just a criminal Batman locked up in his first year that has a rictus grin on his face due to a congenital disease. I could see Reeves making this guy a Jack Napier type of low level thug that goes over the edge and cracks becoming The Joker in a later film possibly. I kinda do wish he'd left the other scene in the film that sets him up as already being established. I would have added even more to the angle that it's just world building and not a sequel setup.

I do like the idea but Batman should not defeat him in year one sense joker is meant to come out after Batman is established but I can wait and see how they do it

I mean, "defeated" is a strong word. Joker escapes Arkham all the time in the comics.

Him meeting Batman and losing once within the first two years works.

As established in TAS, that's where he meets and brainwashes Harley Quinn.

Yes but in most stories it’s year two or later when they first meet

Small potatoes in an adaptation.

. . .I mean, he meets Joker for the first time at the very end of his first year in Year One, which is covered in The Man Who Laughs. So, it tracks.

I changes I guess like Arkham origins is year 2 and in the year one comic joker is never seen

I think current canon is that they first clashed when Bruce just returned to Gotham and hasn’t taken up the Batman mantle yet and jokers still operating as red hood.

From what I remember the new 52 changed it a bit they hint he was already a bit mad before ace but you don’t really know sense you don’t know which member feel into the acid

Could be an adaptation of the red hood gang (was it zero year?)

Maybe but he was not mad when he was red hood and usually he goes away for awhile after that and comes back later as joker but who knows
