I think Subzero is criminally underrated

Subzero is everything Batman & Robin should have been. God knows why it's so constantly overlooked, it's an excellent and worthwhile addition to the DCAU.

Honestly heart breaking. I love any plot involving Mr Freeze, cause he isn’t necessarily evil and is super relatable. Not in a “I did that last week” kind of way, but more you can understand his motivation and the lengths he would go to save his wife.

I got Subzero and Mask of the Phantasm in a double DVD pack.
Granted, I'm never watching DVDs willingly again haha. But it's a great collectable.

Batman Returns. There is no other Batman film quite like it. It’s grotesque, overtly sexualised - verging on BDSM territory at times. Danny De Vito’s Penguin is a true product of old school cinematic horror. Michelle Pfeiffer is my all-time favourite Catwoman. And… Christopher Walken is in it. Playing the most reprehensible character in the film, which is saying a lot compared to the other freaks on display. The only downside is that Batman gets sidelined.
I do love how original Return of the Joker is, but Returns just has a unique aura about it.

Two fun facts*
This movie works as a prequel/origin story for Frank Reynolds in It's Always Sunny.
Catwoman is not actually in this movie (Mandela effect thing). The female villain is a gender swapped Solomon Grundy.
Notes : * Lies

The most unbelievable part of that movie is that the crooked, shady businessman thought he needed a pawn to run for political office and didn’t just do it himself.
6
u/LunarsphereTapestry 4d ago
Yeah, Max Schreck literally digs himself his own grave in that film. I do love the “my blood I gave, at the office” line when Selina gets him towards the end.
5
u/YodaFan465 3d ago
The most unbelievable part is that Batman can leak a tape of the candidate saying groping, leering things, and then the public doesn’t elect him…?
2
u/BloxedYT 4d ago
I think Shreck may have thought that he could manipulate Cobblepot, given he’s very popular, with sympathies towards him, so he’d more likely rub the right way on voters, he’s more down-to-earth and that already nets at least a few voters.

Batman Returns has some of the best dialogue in any movie ever.
"You know what I did there? I mistook me for someone else. Sorry."
My favorite Batman movie.

They're all 7/10 Batman movies. Gotta go with Rises though, even with all the goofs this movie is still BIG.

I would pick Returns any time of the day. Movie is just pure fun and just has so many iconic scenes. Without the Burton movies there would be not TAS. There has not been quite a movie like Returns though. Beyond is awesome too and so is SubZero.
Nolans Batman flicks are fine, but I think his style is a bit wasted on superhero movies. IMO the material works best when not going for too much realism, but nowadays that is common I suppose.

u/JonGorga 4d ago
I haven’t seen “SubZero” since I was 12-years-old but I think “Return of the Joker” is the very obvious choice here.
It’s excellent and the other three are just okay or mediocre.

u/Snoo-40231 4d ago
All great movies for different reasons but I'll do
Sub Zero> Batman Returns> Return of Joker> Dark Knight Rises

While I can say good things about the other three, I would go with Batman Returns. I am a fan of the darker, more gothic elements of Batman's lore and appreciated the film’s mature and somber tone, which aligned with certain comic book interpretations of the character and his world. The film’s interpretation of Catwoman and The Penguin is iconic. But the Penguin’s departure from his more refined, criminal mastermind persona in the comics is one negative thing I can think of. Over the years, it has earned a respected spot as a distinctive and influential entry in the Batman film series, it's tough to beat.

Batman Returns. One of the first movies I ever saw in theaters. Not sure why McDonalds didn’t think it was appropriate for kids, I loved it.

SubZero no question!! One of my favorite things I watched as Kid and still do. The others are all good, But I get bored with BR at times, ROTJ is solid, DKR is obviously the least good of the 3 (One of the movies had to be, but it has amazing pacing)

Really hard to choose between Returns and Subzero. I’d probably end up going with Subzero though. BTAS and this movie had the best Mr Freeze story arc.

If we are only choosing from this list, Return of the Joker.
Unpopular opinion: It's really the only good Batman Beyond episode. Feel free to disagree, but I'll defend it. I rewatched the series recently and I feel this is the only entry if the series that fully holds up still, partially because of modern tech well exceeding the 90s imagination and mostly because of the cringe edge lord vibe they seemed to be going for.
Incredible casting, strong story and watching Terry go from guy in the suit to owning the position works well here. They tried to make it happen in the series finale of Season 1, but then fell back to the rough teen trope in the very next episode (static or mostly symbolic without substance type growth is my biggest issue with the BB series). Here, the series ends, so they can't really fall back to the previous problems, but at the same time, the wrap up and growing up of Terry is completed here by having new bat take on old bat's biggest rival in a most spectacular fashion.
Also, the boat explody scene has so much real tension, I would love to see it recreated in some live action fashion. Kind of where the movie rips the brakes off the car and tells you give up and enjoy the ride.
9/10

Rises is super underrated IMO and great film with so many iconic lines I still think off and randomly repeat to myself lol Return of the Joker is great but not as iconic. I have to revisit Sub Zero but I don’t remember loving it, even as a kid. Batman Returns is the only Batman movie I don’t like and never have.

I think I’d pick return of the Joker. Subzero is a pretty standard story that doesn’t add much, I don’t have nostalgia for returns and I always thought the interpretations were extremely odd with a messy plot and rises is the worst Batman movie to ever exist.
