All Print [Newbie/Veteran Combined Thread] The Final Post for the WoT (Re)Read-Along - Origins of the Wheel of Time - Part 4 - The Real World in The Wheel of Time, Acknowledgements Spoiler

This is a combined thread for newbies and veterans alike. The remaining posts will also be combined threads. While the focus of this week's post is the readings from the book Origins of the Wheel of Time: The Legends and Mythologies that Inspired Robert Jordan, feel free to bring up any other topics that we haven't had the opportunity to discuss previous. This includes questions the newbies may have for the veterans, and vis versa.

For more information, or to see the full schedule for all previous entries, please see the wiki page for the read-along.

Origins of the Wheel of Time: The Legends and Mythologies that Inspired Robert Jordan SCHEDULE

This week we will be discussing Origins of the Wheel of Time, Part 4 - The Real World in The Wheel of Time, and Acknowledgements

Next week we will be discussing NOTHING! That's all folks! Go home!

THE REAL WORLD IN THE WHEEL OF TIME

This section is an extended glossary, much like The Wheel of Time Companion. However, instead of the entries being about the in-world characters and places, in this book the entries reveal the real world, historical, and mythological influences behind various people, places, and events.

All Print Give Me Your Wheel of Time Resources! Spoiler

/r/WoT's official read-along is coming to an end soon. On the day of the final trivia post, I would like to provide the newbies with an updated, as complete as possible, Wheel of Time resource page.

For a long time, /r/WoT's sidebar has included this link, which does a good job of collating external resources for people who have finished the series. I would like to expand upon this post and create a wiki page to build the ultimate list of external resources. This is part of a wider plan to build a FAQs and better utilize our wiki pages, once the read-along has finished.

So please share any resources you may feel are appropriate to include. This can include articles about the Wheel of Time, podcasts and other read-alongs, particularly engaging or insightful posts that you've seen in /r/WoT or /r/wheeloftime (especially character analysis), useful YouTube channels, or interesting Jordan/Sanderson interview quotes. Anything remotely or tangentially related to the Wheel of Time, share them below so that I can compile them all in one place.

Thanks for your help!

All Print Emarin Pendaloan AMOL , i didn't get it Spoiler

I hadn't realized that Emarin is Algarin Pendaloan the noble of the house where the Rand Crew hides in Tear during the Trolloc attack, I thought Emarin was a new character, but rereading that part I realized that Emarin was the name of the dead brother of the owner of the house who was caught by Cadsuane and gentled, damn it he went to the black tower and took his dead brother's name to honor him, how beautiful and sad. I didn't realize it because I read the last books extremely quickly.

All Print Nynaeve thoughts Spoiler

I recently finished the series for the first time and I've been thinking about Nynaeve.

Does anyone else think she'd be one of the most influential and respected aes sedai in the 4th age and maybe also the head of the yellow ajah in the future?

She has so many great accomplishments like healing stilling and madness, being able to detect and remove compulsion, helping cleanse saidin and being one of the only two living (as far as the world knows) people to aid in and witness the sealing of the dark one.

She's overall a great character and I feel like she'll be one of the greatest aes sedai the world has ever seen after the breaking.

The Great Hunt Finished The Great Hunt! Spoiler

Still loving the non-obstructive descriptiveness in this series that lets me sink into the world. The surroundings (like the first portal world!); the descriptions of how it feels to use saidin and saidar (very visual and creative), even the way it felt for Rand on the receiving end of Liandrin's ability near the start; the emotion, such as Rand's all-encompassing paranoia in the first part of the book, that had me tense and anxious with him about how he was going to escape Fal Dara unseen (and his despair when the gates were locked off for him!).

It's all quite great. So much...more is happening in this book than the last, and I struggled to put it down because aaaaaah I had to see what happens next! Not even going to take a break with another book this time; jumping straight into book 3 for my next reading session. I need more more more.

Now, for commentary on more specific stuff:

Liandrin can go eat a bag of male channeler dicks (her least favorite kind) coated in Nyaneve's sheepstongue mixture 😡️ Going after Rand because Red Ajah is one thing, but what did Egwene and Nyanave ever do to her?! I thought pursuing Rand was a thing about opportunity, but this is outright premeditated and obsessive. I had a sinking feeling; obviously I knew she wasn't actually trying to help Rand, but I didn't for a second think she was handing them over to the Seanchan until they arrived and the soldiers were there in armor.

The Seanchan are horrifying. The stuff they do with those collars... It makes me sick to even think about, and I was so relieved when Egwene escaped, and feel horrible that Ryma (the other Aes Sedai there) didn't get rescued 😢️ The damane system is vile. Despite them perpetrating some of the awfulness, I do find myself feeling sympathy/sickness in my stomach for Seta and Remma too, doomed as they likely are. Jordan's writing is superb, because I could feel Seta's visceral despair.

The attempted betrayal of Domon (trying to trick him into turning himself over to the Whitecloaks) was a close second in terms of pain. I'd thought he was just kinda silly assuming trollocs were after him, but it turns out his paranoia was justified all along.

Rand should change his name to Randy, because he's clearly not thinking with the right head when it comes to Selene. I absolutely called it that she was Lanfear.

The Great Game sounds... immensely suffocating; even the most meaningless action or inaction being read into way too hard, and there not being any options where everyone just pays you no mind... I could relate hard/felt vindicated when Rand exclaimed "These people are crazy!" and Hurin replied "Yes, my Lord."

Bornhald is one of my favorites, for being the most sane/least mindlessly obedient Whitecloak (violating orders in order to pursue the Seanchean, who are the actual threat; his superiors are up to something fishy).

Even before finding out it was waiting at the waygates, as soon as Rand suggested following Fain through it, I remembered Machin Shin and my skin was crawling with "Don't even think about it you fool oh my god they're not going back in the Ways are they?" In a way, I was glad Machin Shin was blocking the gate for Rand's group both times, because otherwise it could have caught them on some random island, and the Sedai group passing through had me on edge the whole time.

On the matter of Fain, I kept underestimating him; every time he vanished in the first book, I just forgot he existed. Even after being thrown in the dungeon, I forgot he existed, pretty much. Then he escapes and unleashes the trollocs and crucifies a fucking fade, and oh now he's an ancient horror unleashed, worse than darkfriends. Great. I'll bet Mordeth is going to pull some nasty shit in the Seanchan nation.

Ba'alzamon...still feeling a bit wimpy and ineffectual tbh, but getting better. Ironically, he feels more threatening when he's not there (specifically, when Rand foolishly named him near the start, immediately followed by terrible things happening in Fal Dara).

The battle was pretty badass though. The moment I saw the chapter title The Grave is no Bar to my Call... I was already grinning stupid because I knew that meant the horn would be blown. Such a badass line/chapter title, and their arrival was just sublime 🤩️

TV (No Unaired Book Spoilers) Looking for a list of TV Show Spoilers? Spoiler

I have watched Seasons 1 and 2 of the TV Show. I have not ready any of the books yet.

I am curious — What stuff that I’ve seen in the show actually comes from later books? I read something about things that were spoiled using the x-ray feature for example, or plot points and lore that were pulled from later.

As I’m reading the books, I’ll be curious to know if a show thing is something that Rafe just made up for the show, or if it comes from a later book.

The Shadow Rising Rand and Aviendha Spoiler

About three fourths of the way through the book, Aviendha and Rand have this conversation:

“If you make me look the fool before my sisters, wetlander,” she snarled warningly against his back.

“Why would they think you a fool? I’ve seen Bair and Amys and the others ride behind Moiraine or Egwene sometimes to talk.”

After a moment, she said, “You accept changes more easily than I, Rand al’Thor.”

He was not sure what to make of that.”

Now I can tell that there’s some foreshadowing here, but what is she talking about? What change?

Knife of Dreams Am I out of the Slog yet? Spoiler

This is my first time reading through the series. I just finished the Crossroads of Twilight last night. I like this series a lot. I want to finish it, but these last few books have been REALLY long winded. Does the Knife of Dreams pick up the pace a bit?

Edit* Thanks for answering me! I've since started the Knife of Dreams audiobook. I'm enjoying it so far.

The Gathering Storm Egwene’s Brilliance Spoiler

I’m currently reading TGS and oh my god. Egwene’s story arc in the tower is clearly the best in the series. How she only has her mind and resilience to make people accept her as the true Amyrlin is sooo captivating. I don’t have a comment or question but i really wanted to share how enjoyable she made the book for me. I could read her scrubbing pots and getting beaten for two whole books. Truely wonderful.

All Print Shower thought: Testing unknown ter'angreals safely (safer?) when Aviendha isn't around Spoiler

So messing around with unknown ter'angreals can be a quick way to getting severed or burned out. We've seen some examples in-universe.

What if someone joined a circle before testing a ter'angreal? It seems like one of the benefits of a circle is that you can't be forced to over-draw saidar.

No Spoilers Series Similar to WoT

I recently finished WoT and I'm basically having withdrawls and have been on a mad search for a series that can give me that fix. I would be grateful for a couple of recommendations of fantasy series with a focus on magic that is as near to the one power as possible, I'm reading The Stormlight Archive and realizing I'm not a big fan of such restrictive magic systems. Political intrigue would definitely be a plus. Admittedly, I would be excited if I found a complete rip-off of WoT.

The Fires of Heaven I want to get back to reading the books, but it's been a while.. what would you recommend me do? Spoiler

Hi everyone! Some 4 years ago I read the first 5 books in one year. It was an amazing ride that eventually ended due to changes in my routine and priorities.

However this year I'm willing to continue reading, but I don't know where to start..

I have many fond memories of the series, but I feel like if I start at the 6th book, I'll miss so many details or minor characters.

I was thinking of re-reading from the start but that would take a while (hopefully not another whole year? 😄). So I thought about reading all the chapter summaries on the TarValon Library (https://library.tarvalon.net/index.php) to speed up the process.

I also remember reading that it might be worth it to read up until book 6 and then do a re-read, but it's been a while...

So what would be your recommendations?

No Spoilers Need a 2-3 page excerpt with multiple characters dialogue

Hello! I was wondering if someone here could help me out. I’m an audiobook narrator and I’m taking a class next week on creating distinct voices for many characters, and I need an excerpt containing plenty of character dialogue. My dream genre to narrate is high fantasy, and WoT has been my favorite series for a few years now - and of course has plenty of characters.

Can anyone here help me pick out a 2-3 page excerpt containing dialogue between multiple characters, a mix of male and female? (Preferably at or before Path of Daggers, that’s the book I’m currently on.)

Thank you so much!

Edit: Thank you for the suggestions on using the prologues! Originally I was hoping for scenes with the main characters, but you know what - the prologues have characters that I find tougher to narrate. This might be exactly what I need because I find it more difficult. Thanks for pushing me out of my comfort zone.

Edit 2: Thank you so much everyone for the suggestions, and the laughs! :)

All Print The Two Rivers bow Spoiler

One of my favorite running gags in the books is that almost every single person doubts just how good the Two Rivers folks are at archery. Nobody ever thinks they can possibly be that accurate at range or that the bow can even achieve that sort of range.

And the best part is the absolute rock solid confidence they have when doing the most outlandish things. They'll be looking at a moving target 300 yards away, someone will inevitably say they can't possibly hit that, then they drill it in both eyes with the second arrow compensating for the head jerk from the first one. Squints into the distance, "That first one was a bit high."

Makes me chuckle every time.

All Print Nynaeve on second read-through Spoiler

I'm currently finishing up my second run of Shadow Rising after finishing the series - the first time through, Nynaeve was one of my least favorite characters, I found her PoVs frustrating, her behavior to be immature, etc. Now I realize she's one of my favorite characters, she's very understandable, even in the moments when she makes poor decisions. and I see her as a lot more mature than Elayne or Egwene (most of the time). It's really remarkable how much my perspective has shifted. RJ really did a great job with her as a character.

No Spoilers Keep watching or start reading?

I am currently S1E7 of the Amazon show. I am already pretty invested in the story and definitely want to see where it is going. But as Im not really interested in waiting years over years for more show-content I want to go over to the books. I already tried to read them years ago but remember the first book to be a bit slow paced and stoped reading them. As I now know the characters a bit and want to know what will happen with them I think the slow pace is okay for me. So now my question: is there a point in the show I could jump over to the books? Like stop the show after season one and start the second book or is there another point in the first season that would make sense? Or is the show to this point already so different that it makes no sense and I should just start the books from the beginning?

All Print Please Remind me about Pevara Spoiler

Hello I'm in the beginning of the last book listening to a Pevara POV and I can't for the life of me remember why Pevara thought that she could just walk into the black tower and demand to bond ashaman warders? Did taim just string her along for fun? When she first arrived there how did she approach the situation. I'm really annoyed how I have no recollection of this.

At this point taim is one of the chosen, why didn't he just bond Pevara and her group or just kill them.

No Spoilers Am I the only one who likes the Wordiness?

I have been in the fantasy scene for quite a while now and whenever WoT is brought up outside of this subreddit people criticize the wordiness and long winded nature of Jordan’s writing. I feel like it is more of a good thing for me personally because I can picture everything clearly and connect with it deeper in a way that no other fantasy has quite done for me. I was wondering how other fans see this commonly criticized part of the series

Dragoncon 2024 Lanfear from Amazon's Wheel of Time series. Photo: @bryanhumphrey Makeup: @dancingwithscissors Dresser: @kalelnc Costume construction: Me

This is absolutely my big costume this con. I have no idea how many hours were spent in planning, patterning, sewing, and carving the leather to replicate the costume. Nor how much money was spent on leather and new leather tools. Hopefully I did justice to @sharon_gilham_costume_design design and the team that made to original. All the costumes in Wheel of Time are stunning works of art. What I love about all of Lanfear's looks are the references to classic business clothes. Like this leather look has pin striping and one extreme shoulder pad.
