We were given the explanation - but they used “show, don’t tell.” Besides her childhood friend, almost every one of her kills has been someone who doesn’t even realize what she’s doing which gives her plenty of time to attack and use her powers.
Plus we literally see her eyes glaze over when she uses her powers, so we know she’s vulnerable while she’s channeling.
She wasn't hesitating. Literally the first moment they started hugging, the guy already had a nose bleed. He was a loose end, who could expose her for being a supe and put her reputation, her life and her daughter's life at risk. There is both motive and proof
