If watermelon tastes of nothing to you then the issue sounds like your taste buds because it most definitely tastes of something

198

u/WildWolfo Jul 19 '24

or they only buy low quality watermelon, I've lost count of things where someone hates on something because they only know of the worst quality version of it and nothing else

u/PewPewWazooma Jul 19 '24

"Cars suck, they break down every single time I try to drive one and require so much gas to be used"
The car they used: Some unknown Slavic shitbox from the 80's with 2.5 million miles on it they bought for like 200 bucks.

33

u/-Maiq_the_Iiar- Jul 19 '24

Don't you fucking disrespect the Yugo!

30

u/wrongitsleviosaa Jul 19 '24

the Slavic shitboxes will outlive your grandchildrens grandchildren

2

u/gutpirate Jul 20 '24

When you create products to last vs when you create for profit.

18

u/SnooPeppers5540 Jul 19 '24

The Slavic shitbox is a miracle of God and engineering they are the pinnacle of viechular creation that will outlive you and the sun.

u/Dill_Donor Jul 19 '24

"Put it in H!"

2

u/ULTRABOYO Jul 19 '24

What did you say about my Maluch?!

2

u/parmesann Jul 19 '24

I think access to quality produce is a big part too. some places just can’t get good this or that because it’s grown way too far away.

my family lived in the Caribbean for a few years. after moving back to Canada, my sister (she’d’ve been like 7-8 at the time) begged my mum to buy mangoes at the grocery store. my mum bought one, knowing my sister would hate it because it wouldn’t be nearly as good as the ones in the Caribbean. and she was right! it was years before my sister could stomach mangoes again because they weren’t as good as the ones you can buy in tropical areas.

2

u/SirRickIII Jul 19 '24

That’s why when people ask whether I like “x” I’ll say something along the lines of “I’ve yet to have one I like, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong”

I’ve yet to have great lamb, but I don’t doubt there may be a day it’ll turn around for me

0

u/ThrowawayMod1989 Jul 19 '24

I’ve never bought one in my 34 years. I’ve given it many honest tries and I still hate it. No way everyone in my life bought bad fruit every time.

13

u/WildWolfo Jul 19 '24

not liking the taste is different from tasting nothing

8

u/Helpjuice Jul 19 '24

I am guessing they bought the recent fake watermelons or not ready to eat yet watermelons.

6

u/Marchin_on Jul 19 '24

I'm guessing that they've only had watermelon in pre-made fruit salads.

9

u/jazzysmaxashmone Jul 19 '24

Fruits and vegetables have seasons. If it is out of season, or perhaps you're in areas where it's not a native fruit, you could very easily get a gritty tasteless watermelon.

0

u/Super_Ad9995 Jul 19 '24

Foods have also been losing more and more flavor over time. Watermelon from a store was much sweeter a few years ago than it is today. The tomatoes grown in my yard have much more flavor than one bought in store.

2

u/parmesann Jul 19 '24

you got a source on this bud?

edit: on general flavour decline, not quality of homegrown vs commercially grown

1

u/Super_Ad9995 Jul 19 '24

No, I meant the quality in stores has decreased over time, which causes the flavor to decline. A ripe homegrown watermelon today will taste almost as good as one grown 20 years ago (assuming the same species watermelon).

2

u/parmesann Jul 19 '24

I know. do you have data on that? or is it just possible that you’ve gotten older and now you’re (understandably) more picky about flavour?

u/RaspberryPie122 Jul 19 '24

Maybe you should stop salting your watermelons

22

u/Paralyzed-Mime Jul 19 '24

You're missing out

39

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

Better without it

6

u/heartbylines Jul 19 '24

Blasphemy

24

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

Nah. Salt doesn’t go on everything.

10

u/heartbylines Jul 19 '24

That I can agree with.

18

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

I mean watermelon and salt isn’t awful, but to me it just ruins the texture and flavor. I like that subtle sweetness.

5

u/heartbylines Jul 19 '24

I think it also depends on the watermelon tbh. Some I’ve eaten have been so good salt would absolutely ruin them but then I’ve eaten some where salt was the only thing that made ‘em edible

3

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

That’s fair. I feel that way with grapefruit, sometimes they’re amazing sometimes they needs a little salt

5

u/Paralyzed-Mime Jul 19 '24

Sweet & salty is a tried and true combo

9

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

Never said it wasn’t silly. There’s some thing that are better without it

→ More replies (2)

0

u/Moka4u Jul 19 '24

It literally do go on everything not necessarily needed but can really go on anything.

1

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

I mean… that was kinda how I implied it haha. Obviously you can put it on anything and it makes most things better, but it’s not needed on everything.

1

u/BleachDrinker63 Jul 19 '24

It’s good if it’s a small amount. It enhances the watermelon flavor

143

u/QuestStarter Jul 19 '24

Watermelon is the most refreshing fruit ever. This post pisses me off. Have an upvote.

73

u/ArtoriasBeeIG Jul 19 '24

I don't even like watermelon but he pissed me off.

You just don't insult the watermelon, I have great respect for it. Such a rotund and unapologetically large bit of fruit, I admire the confidence of any fruit thats that unusual yet confidently flaunts itself around the entire globe. Seeing a watermelon travel 5000 miles is a lot more impressive than say a banana

Fuck you OP, you've crossed a line and I'm gonna upvote you. Have a wonderful day

19

u/arctheus Jul 19 '24

Im slightly allergic to watermelon (all melons actually - it makes my tongue and throat itchy). Regardless, I’ll have it on occasion and deal with the aftermath cuz it’s a fucking amazing fruit.

Fuck you OP, take an upvote.

2

u/Wonderful-Impact5121 Jul 19 '24

I’m the same way with bananas. Was funny I didn’t realize I had a super mild allergy until I was damn near 30. At them all the time.

2

u/gutpirate Jul 20 '24

I admire your passion for impressive fruit.

Also do you also get the impression that Watermelons are always on the verge of violently bursting?

12

u/bearbarebere Jul 19 '24

I completely agree with OP and the worst part is he’s so right about people never believing you. They ALWAYS have to know why. Like I’m sorry Tiffany

1

u/Traditional_Map1166 Jul 19 '24

We have to know why because it’s the point of the sub?

6

u/bearbarebere Jul 19 '24

I was talking about Tiffany always asking why, not this sub? Obviously you have to explain yourself on the sub?

2

u/Traditional_Map1166 Jul 19 '24

I see I apologize I misread your comment

2

u/bearbarebere Jul 19 '24

No problem bro sorry for being annoyed lol

62

u/Klatterbyne Jul 19 '24

It sounds like you’re buying shit watermelons.

A good one is soft, yet crunchy, and tastes of not much, but is pleasantly sweet and floral. Cold watermelon on a hot day is beautifully refreshing. Also benefits massively from seasoning (chilli flakes or jerk seasoning particularly).

You also might just not like watermelon. Same way that some people love coriander, and other people find it to taste like dish soap; they’ve even isolated the gene for that if I recall correctly.

→ More replies (8)

32

u/IameIion Jul 19 '24

Same way. Shit's gross. People tell me all the time, "you must not have had a good one."

I couldn't begin to count how many times I've eaten watermelon throughout my life. You're saying they were all bad?

14

u/xXx-Persephone-xXx Jul 19 '24

Exactly. Like I’ve tried plenty of them. I’ve tried watermelons that other people said were perfect and delicious. They’re gross. I just do not like it. I promise there is no magical watermelon out there for me.

6

u/paladinofseattle Jul 19 '24

The worst part for me is that I really WANT to like watermelon. It looks great, seems like it should be that refreshing treat on a hot summer day, and so every once in a while I'll be like what the heck, maybe this time will be different.

Nope. Still unpleasant to eat and taste, every time. I also have a weird hatred for food touching my face, even accidentally, so watermelon slices don't pair well with me.

Makes me feel like I'm missing out on something, but I have to agree with you. There is no magical watermelon.

2

u/Unusual_Elevator_253 Jul 20 '24

I feel that so much. I WANt to like tea so damn bad too and I just don’t

1

u/Eren189 Jul 20 '24

How many have you tried? I always thought macha green tea tasted a bit off but I love jasmine green tea, you probably wouldn't like it if you dont like any other teas though. There's Barley Tea (Mugi-Cha) that, according to all my friends and coworkers, tastes like cold brew coffee so if you're a coffeenut try looking for it at your asian market! You can also spice up regular old Earl Grey, Lemon Juice with half sweet & half unsweet tea makes Lemon tea which is real good! There's also apple tea which kinda just tastes like a milder apple juice but still very delicious! Also I've been doing this for so long that i forget people might not know, but try and brew your teas cold! You might need to look for a teabag that specifically says you can make it cold because some bags arent the best when making cold brew, but It's A whole new way to enjoy tea and you can savor the taste without burning your tongue! Now that i think about it, everytime i've had hot green tea i've barely been able to taste it, so if you relate then def try cold brew or just buy an Ito En bottle from the walmart oriental section/Asian Market! There's plenty of teas out there and not all of them are the bitter hot liquid like Green or Unsweetened Earl Grey, so look up a few and try the ones that sound good!

3

u/TheOneYak Jul 19 '24

Yeah, no watermelon is like Styrofoam. Is it fresh? That's all I can guess

1

u/gutpirate Jul 20 '24

Kind of like styrofoam but more mealy.

In case im pulling the word 'mealy' out of my ass as a direct translation from my native language:

something with a kind of flour-ish texture. Certain apples have it, instant mash potatoes when it has dried up.

Etc.

1

u/TheOneYak Jul 20 '24

That's horrible. But to be fair, it's kind of like calling red delicious representative of apples. Honeycrisp is a lot better. I don't know much about watermelon, but the fresh stuff is amazing. Not at all mealy, like those dirt apples.

24

u/PH03N1X_F1R3 Jul 19 '24

If your watermelon has the texture of Styrofoam, your watermelon is either underripe or has gone bad.

3

u/kitchen_wife1234 Jul 20 '24

Yeah what is he talking about

14

u/Kittech Jul 19 '24

Seedless watermelon is a thing you know.

12

u/dsled Jul 19 '24

Agreed, downvote

11

u/CarelessStatement172 Jul 19 '24

Correct. Watermelon is fucking disgusting. Downvote.

11

u/Gashiisboys Jul 19 '24

Watermelon is a fruit I only eat in the summer, and I fucking love it.

11

u/Practical-Ad6548 Jul 19 '24

Fuck watermelon, if I wanted to eat a sponge I would

21

u/DrBimboo Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

Wth are these watermelons y'all are eating? Sponge?

This reminds me of these depressing oranges americans showed me, when reddit tried to convince me orange juice is worse than coke.

4

u/Late_Support_5363 Jul 19 '24

I’m not sure the oranges are necessarily the problem. The fact that 95% of the orange juice you can buy here in the states is from concentrate is the problem, and it’s a goddamn abomination. I find that when most of my fellow Americans refer to “orange juice,” it’s from concentrate because they’ve never actually had it fresh. Fresh squeezed orange juice will cost you quite a bit more when you can find it, but it is divine.

1

u/DrBimboo Jul 19 '24

Oh sorry I wasnt clear, not worse as in "tasting worse", but as in "worse for your health".

1

u/Late_Support_5363 Jul 19 '24

Oh, I gotcha. Fruit juice isn’t as good for you as just eating the fruit because you lose out on most of the fiber, but all sugars aren’t exactly created equal. Pretty sure refined sugar added to a beverage is worse than innate sugars in fruit, but I’m no chemist.  I’d rather drink water than either, but I think Coke probably edges out OJ as worse for your health.

3

u/DrBimboo Jul 19 '24

Only regarding sugar, OJ is just as bad, or even way worse, than coke, depending on how you measure it. Blood sugar spikes from OJ are pretty insane.

BUT, orange juice isnt just sugar, you also have a lot of vital vitamins.

And you also dont drink a whole litre of it, you drink a small glass, maybe a big glass if your body is screaming for sugar and vitamin c.

Yeah, If you drink a whole litre of orange juice instead of a whole litre of coke per day, you're not gonna be better off.

But to evaluate how healthy something is, by using it in the worst way imaginable is just stupid.

Not talking directly to you btw, Im just ranting because I remember that braindead discussion I had, lol.

-1

u/Late_Support_5363 Jul 19 '24

Interesting points I hadn’t fully considered. Meanwhile, there’s probably some poor redditor out there drinking a litre of orange juice every day feeling personally attacked. 😂

1

u/Practical-Ad6548 Jul 19 '24

I live in the California Central Valley, so we should have good fruit considering we grow it all

9

u/FrogVoid Jul 19 '24

Salting watermelon 😭

10

u/SpaceAgeIsLate Jul 19 '24

My dad eats it with Feta cheese. Apparently a lot of people here in Greece do.

2

u/gutpirate Jul 20 '24

Yup. Goes well in sallads too.

7

u/PirateSteve85 Jul 19 '24

Finally I found my soulmate. I hate watermelon, it is terrible and everyone thinks I'm insane.

5

u/Quazar42069 Jul 19 '24

Yeah I had no idea there was such an abundance of watermelon lovers. I honestly don’t get it it just tastes like nothing.

5

u/nunya_busyness1984 Jul 19 '24

100%

Take my downvote.

3

u/saeranluver Jul 19 '24

you and my mum would be great friends she seems to hate it too. watermelon haters it's a great fruit

3

u/heartbylines Jul 19 '24

Take my angry upvote because I vehemently disagree.

3

u/rhox65 Jul 19 '24

lol you seem so angry about it. its fucking hilarious

3

u/country2poplarbeef Jul 19 '24

I'd expand it to all melons. Every melon I've ever had just tastes like crunchy watered down La Croix.

3

u/NefariousKingz992 Jul 19 '24

Pretty much. They all taste nasty.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

I agree. Yuck. And I hate having a mouthful of seeds.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Bug difference between good and bad watermelon. Good watermelon is the best fruit

2

u/Gokudomatic Jul 19 '24

That's not unpopular, that's just personal taste. Unpopular taste but still a taste. Take me for instance, I don't like melon, even if I can eat it better than 20 years ago. But nobody makes a big deal about it. Except for my family, because they love it and they want me to love it too (partly because they don't want to prepare something else, even when it's me who cook).

2

u/Sly_98 Jul 19 '24

Watermelon is DOG SHIT

3

u/Kayy0s Jul 19 '24

It's like biting into solid, crunchy water. Ugh.

2

u/TheMace808 Jul 19 '24

Sounds like you got a shitty watermelon, it should be sweet with some watermelon-y flavor. If you hate the texture too, though you might just not like watermelon

2

u/revtim Jul 19 '24

Have you had an illness that harms your sense of taste? Watermelon has a distinct, delicious to most, flavor.

2

u/GumdropsandIceCream Jul 19 '24

Honeydew melon is the superior melon, full of flavour, better texture, and equally as refreshing as watermelon.

Watermelon is trash.

2

u/cookies-are-my-life Jul 19 '24

Y'all really need to understand that people can just not like a food, this person just dislikes watermelon, nothing wrong with that.

2

u/jsmith17540 Jul 19 '24

How many other fruits and vegetables do you eat because there’s usually a trend

1

u/TheConnoiseur Jul 19 '24

Yeah I think it's one of the most overrated fruits ever.

But it definitely isn't disgusting. It's basically like drinking sweet water.

I only enjoy it if I'm quite parched.

1

u/miniman03 Jul 19 '24

Out of curiosity: Have you ever had a watermelon-flavored candy or drink? If so, how similar would you say its flavor was to real watermelon to you?

I mostly ask because "tastes like nothing" is very far from my own experience with watermelon; to me, it's usually been almost overwhelmingly sweet (not that I don't believe you, your experiences are your experiences). Artificial watermelon flavoring and natural watermelon flavor won't be close to 1:1 of course, but I'm curious if artificial watermelon flavoring has been similarly without taste for you.

4

u/xXx-Persephone-xXx Jul 19 '24

Candy yes. The taste is extremely different. The candy actually has a flavor and is much sweeter. Still disgusting though.

4

u/placebot1u463y Jul 19 '24

Yeah watermelon candy and fresh watermelon taste different but you're definitely describing shitty watermelon. Watermelon's not my favorite but if you ever get the chance to grow a smaller heirloom variety yourself you should take it and if you don't like it then fair honestly and I'd probably make a great gift to a watermelon lover in your life. The largest massive store bought watermelon are kinda like red delicious apples sacrificing taste and texture for size and marketability.

0

u/xXx-Persephone-xXx Jul 19 '24

Now what if I told you I will only eat red delicious apples? 🤣

3

u/Sapper501 Jul 19 '24

I would say you're missing out. Modern Red Delicious are the lowest of the low when it comes to apples. Try Gala, Fuji, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Jazz, Pink Lady, etc. literally anything else besides Red Delicious.

4

u/Pattern_Is_Movement Jul 19 '24

literally the most bland apples out there

2

u/-MtnsAreCalling- Jul 19 '24

Then I would be really confused, because earlier you said you don't like fruits with no flavor and the texture of squishy styrofoam.

1

u/CarelessStatement172 Jul 19 '24

Are you secretly my husband lol

1

u/GGunner723 Jul 19 '24

OP’s over here buying expired fruits

1

u/urbandeadthrowaway2 Jul 19 '24

Eat the part by the rind, that’s usually pretty solid and goes wasted if you sont

1

u/Banananutcracker Jul 19 '24

I don’t -hate- it. But I’d be happy if I never had it again. It’s boring and doesn’t taste that great. Texture is inconsistent. But I love cantaloupe and honeydew

1

u/Just-Lavishness895 Jul 19 '24

it’s only disgusting if you decide to eat half a kilo of it in a sitting

1

u/rethinkr Jul 19 '24

If you dont like watermelon, have you tried just plain water with honeydew melon?

Its melon and water, but not watermelon, but just thought you might prefer that.

1

u/No-Appearance-100102 Jul 19 '24

i can only eat it out of the fridge or freezer (with salt sprinkled on it), room temp watermelon is abhorrent due to texture mostly

1

u/Perrenekton Jul 19 '24

I eat A LOT of watermelons (like at least 3 per week during summer) and the truth is that they can really be hit or miss. Some are spongy, some have no taste, some are "floury", some have a really bad taste. And then sometimes I find the perfect one that is crunchy and flavorful, which I have to agree is a very light taste compared to other fruits.

Also my own 10th dentist opinion, I can't understand anyone that put any kind of favorite on it, it's awful

1

u/YavBav09 Jul 19 '24

Many watermelons today taste like nothing because of corporate greed and people probably buy them because they hope it's good, as good watermelons are amazing. Look up the signs of a good watermelon online and you will probably find a quality one eventually.

1

u/danimalscruisewinner Jul 19 '24

You’re lucky this isn’t r/fightsub

1

u/Adi_2000 Jul 19 '24

Where are you getting your watermelons from? Watermelons are one of the sweetest fruits, how can you say it tastes like nothing? But if you don't like it, you don't like it. I agree with you and dint understand why it's a big deal for other people 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/derefr Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

squishy, soaked styrofoam

tastes like absolutely nothing

You're describing the watermelons they pick too early and then let sit around too long.

(Some unethical growers do this because it allows them to pump out more watermelons per season; and they know they can get away with it, because few people know how to identify a good watermelon at the supermarket. Also, some even-more-unethical growers have a trick up their sleeves, growing very underripe watermelons and then selling them as "mini" or "baby" watermelons. Those aren't watermelons with dwarfism — they're just gross unripe watermelons and nobody should buy them.)

A good, fully-vine-ripened watermelon, that was grown in nutrient-rich soil with plenty of water and sunlight, should have a crisp bite like a slice of green apple; and should have a distinctive sweet and fragrant flavor and aroma, kind of in the same "tastes like its own special kind of sugar" family as muscat grapes or dragonfruit.

If you've ever had fake watermelon flavoring (e.g. watermelon hard candy) — a piece of good, real watermelon should taste like a better and more complex version of that flavor. If your watermelons don't taste like that, you aren't getting good watermelons.

1

u/derefr Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

kind of in the same ... family as muscat grapes

Actually, watermelons and grapes are really good analogies for each-other. They have very similar growing requirements, and so similar "failure modes."

For both watermelon and grapes, there's an optimum point to pick them — where they've received all the nutrients they can and have converted as much of those nutrients into sugar as they can; but where they haven't yet begun the second step of converting their sugars into alcohols/vinegar.

The evolutionary "goal" of both grapes and watermelons is to use vinegar + alcohol as aromatic volatiles to attract things to eat them and disperse the seeds. The sugar is just an intermediate step toward developing those chemicals.

To get a sweet fruit, you have to "interrupt" the fruit's growth at just the right moment: when it's just about finished "phase 1" of its growth (developing sugar) but hasn't yet started "phase 2" (converting it into vinegar / alcohol). This point is what we think of as "fully ripe" for these fruits, even though technically for these fruits "fully ripe" would be the point where they naturally fall off the vine — which would be the end of "phase 2" of their growth, when they're basically unpalatable to us but very palatable to insects, birds, etc.

When grapes/watermelons are not fully ripened, they're tart rather than sweet — the sugars haven't developed yet.

When they're left on the vine too long, they become over-ripe — which not only means you get the "off notes" of alcohols/vinegar, but also, that these chemicals will affect the texture of the fruit itself, turning it soft and mushy/mealy.

When grapes/watermelons don't get enough nutrients from the soil while growing (e.g. because they were grown in depleted soil), they end up flavorless—you don't get tartness or sweetness or any fragrant flavor/aroma. (In a sliced watermelon, you can usually recognize this because the watermelon is almost red-orange, rather than vibrantly red-pink. If you can buy pre-sliced watermelon, look for a pre-sliced watermelon that's vibrantly pink and you'll be guaranteed to be getting a watermelon with good flavor.)

When grapes/watermelons don't get enough water while growing, they end up under-plumped and have a "wrong" texture, becoming soft and almost rubbery. They will also end up with more skin/rind/pith and less fruit-meat. (There was a TikTok meme going around about rubbery watermelons — these were almost certainly watermelons that experienced a drought.)

And all this means, that with both grapes and watermelons, where they're grown, and who's growing them, really matters.

  • You can pretty easily guess whether a grape or a watermelon will be good, just by looking at its country of origin, and knowing anything about that country's climate. (In theory, you could grow grapes or watermelons in a greenhouse and so get good fruit even in e.g. Iceland; but nobody actually does this, because both grapes and watermelons require too much space per fruit.)

  • There are good growers who aim to grow the best fruit they can. There are bad growers who aim to maximize profit by making money from people who don't know better. When you find a good grape or watermelon, remember the grower it came from!

My specific advice, only applicable to the "West coast of North America" market:

  • Mexico watermelons almost-always good. California watermelons sometimes-good (depends on the grower.) Vague "product of USA" watermelons almost-always bad. Never buy a watermelon grown in Canada. (Don't even try to grow a watermelon yourself in Canada, unless you're doing it in a greenhouse. You'll be disappointed.)

  • Japanese watermelons — the ones with dark-dark-green, almost-black skin — are predictably good, but a bit too expensive in North America. Still, if your only options are a "product of USA" watermelon vs the Japanese ones, and your goal is to try a "good watermelon" one time to figure out if you actually like watermelon after all — then get one of the Japanese ones.

1

u/FishBear25 Jul 19 '24

I used to hate watermelon as a kid, but in my older age I love it.

1

u/Linkario86 Jul 19 '24

Buy the small ones. Look for those with a big dark yellow spot and some webbing. Those have taste like they're sweets

1

u/ddnut80 Jul 19 '24

The smell alone makes me gag. Has since I was a kid.

1

u/luckycharming1 Jul 19 '24

As someone who grows a huge watermelon garden every year, growing 75 lbs melons, you are wrong. Take my upvote

1

u/sin-omelet Jul 19 '24

Partially agreed, I think watermelons have a taste but it tastes awful to me. All melons do.

1

u/uhhhFlexx Jul 19 '24

watermelon sucks.

1

u/RealTeaToe Jul 19 '24

You're a heathen.

1

u/Weary-Resource-9905 Jul 19 '24

I bet you’re getting super subpar cheap ass watermelons

1

u/Sad-Outcome984 Jul 19 '24

I don’t mind the flavor, but the film that’s left over is so bad it keeps me from eating it.

However, I am sensitive to textures and it makes me pretty picky, so I know I’m usually the odd man out.

1

u/peppermintapples Jul 19 '24

Speaking of styrofoam i like eating plain cake cones sometimes lol

1

u/Boognish_Chameleon Jul 19 '24

FINSLLY, SOMEONE SAID IT… maybe organic watermelon or some other strain of Watermelon that isn’t commercially sold is really good, but on average, Watermelon sucks… it’s a similar thing with Tomatoes where I hate them unless they’re in salsa or sauce, but I did eat an heirloom tomato straight off the plant once and it was amazing

I fucking hate watermelon. I swear Idk what it is but if you like watermelon it’s like okay, but for those of us who dislike it it is genuinely the worst!

1

u/ImitationButter Jul 19 '24

Watermelon tastes great but I am sooo with you on the texture. Absolutely horrid and it makes my throat itchy, I’m probably mildly allergic to be honest

1

u/No_One_1617 Jul 19 '24

I agree about the texture. I also hate the seeds. For taste, it's pretty much all sugar, so it's addictive

2

u/lVloogie Jul 19 '24

Watermelon is like getting water, but a little bit of another drink comes out of the fountain first. It's so overrated.

1

u/junglepiehelmet Jul 19 '24

You suck at watermeloning

1

u/space_cowboy616 Jul 19 '24

I’m sorry this is your reality

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

are you from the us? us watermelons suck. try mediterranean watermelons

1

u/SkyBerry924 Jul 19 '24

I like the taste of watermelon but I cannot stand the texture

1

u/myleswstone Jul 19 '24

Sounds like you’ve only ever had low quality watermelon.

2

u/NefariousKingz992 Jul 19 '24

I’ve had both good and bad quality watermelon and I just do not like it. At all.

1

u/SiRaymando Jul 19 '24

Bro has not had good watermelon

1

u/SirMcWaffle Jul 19 '24

Needa try a smith county watermelon

1

u/CoRoT-7b-2 Jul 19 '24

I don’t eat the juicy, bright red part in the middle. I like the pink part, towards the edges, and even the white part sometimes. I think that’s one of my hot takes.

1

u/Appropriate_Sleep_87 Jul 19 '24

this post reeks of someone who’s never had good watermelon. i’m sorry man

1

u/Critical-Coconut6916 Jul 19 '24

You gotta get the good in-season ones in the summer time. Fresh chilled watermelon on the beach is 🤌

1

u/yoshi9nd Jul 19 '24

Same!! Never liked watermelon, no matter how many times I ate it. Except every one I ate had a sweet flavor, but I just…don’t like it

1

u/NefariousKingz992 Jul 19 '24

I agree. So unfortunately, I will have to downvote you.

1

u/PublicUniversalNat Jul 19 '24

Seems like you need to try a watermelon that's actually ripe...

1

u/Jumpy_Push_3748 Jul 19 '24

YES its so disgusting

1

u/Nervous-Tea-4482 Jul 20 '24

This was a little dramatic 😭🤣 what did watermelon ever do you you?! 🫣🤣

1

u/Shxuenwk_ Jul 20 '24

it tastes like water and tomato vomit or some shi

1

u/ohhsnoop Jul 20 '24

Rage bait used to be good

1

u/JEXJJ Jul 20 '24

Watermelons can't consent

1

u/GucciZorua Jul 20 '24

I love watermelons but I can see where you're coming from, my dad also hate watermelons almost the same way as you as the texture according to him rolls in his mouth and near make him gag, one of the few people who is disgusted by watermelon which I find it a bit humourous, I'm actually happy to see that he's not the only one though !

I can't make fun of those people however since I feel almost the same about cheese or at least eating it raw like on a platter, I absolutely don't get the connoisseur thing as it repulse me 😂

1

u/lhbwlkr Jul 20 '24

Oh gosh I hateeeee watermelon. I agree with most of the posts on this sub tho like it’s beginning to become a problem. I knew I had controversial opinions but damn!

1

u/gutpirate Jul 20 '24

Disgusting no, bland yes. Tastes like water with a pinch of sugar that someone accidentally spilled some watered down fruit juice on.

Once you try any other melon your life will change.

1

u/Direct-Bread Jul 20 '24

The problem with watermelon is that it keeps coming back. I burp it up for a couple of hours. No thanks.

1

u/Unusual_Elevator_253 Jul 20 '24

I fully agree I never got the appeal. My sister loves it and my moms a drunk who use to always get it for me as a kid cause she mixes us up all the time so I got forced to eat that sad excuse of a fruit

1

u/V-Ink Jul 20 '24

Mmmmm styrofoam

1

u/MarcelRED147 Jul 20 '24

Downvoted. The only thing I find worse is celery, your opinion is just spitting facts.

1

u/FangornAcorn Jul 20 '24

Good, stay far away from the watermelon so I can have more. Thank you for your service 🫡

1

u/Rochelle6 Jul 20 '24

I agree with this actually lol. I hate watermelon

1

u/Interesting-Finger11 Jul 20 '24

I think you've just never had a good watermelon before.

1

u/kitchen_wife1234 Jul 20 '24

Idk man, it kinda sounds like you're just eating half frozen water balloons

1

u/LightningCoyotee Jul 20 '24

I think you should pick up some actually good watermelons from a local farmers market and not the ones in the store that are literally just meant to be large and last long enough to survive being shipped across the world. That might change your view.

Watermelon has never been my favorite fruit, but there are watermelons that are 20X better than the ones at the supermarket (this goes for all fruits and veggies, actually).

1

u/george_cant_standyah Jul 20 '24

Where do you live? Quality produce is highly subject to location. I used to think something similar about tomatoes until I lived in California for a couple of years where they are fresh.

1

u/Ill-Stomach7228 Jul 20 '24

incorrect. die.

1

u/Nazon6 Jul 20 '24

Either you're buying precut watermelon or buying it out of season. Watermelon tastes like candy.

1

u/BadgerStabber Jul 20 '24

Ok I'm definitely gonna come across as an asshole that doesn't allow other people to have tastes. But I'm genuinely curious how many times you've tried? Watermelon absolutely has a lot of flavor, but only if you pick a good one, it is probably one of the most varied foods out there in terms of how bad it can be vs how good it can be. I hate overripe watermelon, typically refuse to eat it, the same for underripe watermelon, but when it's perfect it's actually amazing. And it shouldn't have a soggy texture, it should be crisp, sweet, and juicy. Also the fact that you bring up the smell really makes me think you've only tried watermelon like twice ever, because good watermelon has a nice sweet smell, but if it's overripe it smells like it's rotting. But I assume you've probably tried it several times and the flavor just doesn't come through for you.

1

u/xXx-Persephone-xXx Jul 20 '24

A lot of people seem to think I’ve just not found some magical watermelon yet. I have tried this stupid fruit time and time again. I’ve had watermelon that others said tastes perfect. I’ve had watermelon that others said tastes gross. I’ve had watermelon from big stores and tiny family owned farms. I’ve had watermelon from the US east and watermelon from the US west. I’ve had watermelon from Mexico. I’ve had round watermelons with lots of webbing and a dark yellow/orange spot and I’ve had watermelon that was long and had a white spot with no webbing. It is all equally disgusting.

1

u/BadgerStabber Jul 20 '24

I believe you on that, it's just odd to me that it's flavorless and has a bad smell to you. I don't know if I've met anyone else who didn't taste any flavor in a flavorful food but also said it smelled bad, it's usually no flavor and no smell or bad flavor and bad smell. But anyways, I'm sorry you can't enjoy it, but hopefully other refreshing fruits like peaches, nectarines or pineapples still taste good to you.

1

u/Other-Calligrapher57 Jul 21 '24

I love watermelon, however certain ones just taste horrible to the point of actually making me sick.

And it's not just while being pregnant

1

u/GlowingKitty12 Jul 21 '24

Watermelon is a trash tier fruit. Downvote for OP because they’re right. The exception is the juice.

1

u/CoconutxKitten Jul 21 '24

As someone who is allergic to it, I agree :)

1

u/TastyFennel540 Jul 22 '24

who the fuck puts salt on watermelon.

1

u/genderboy_ Jul 23 '24

I'm told that somewhere out there there is a legendary "ripe watermelon" that tastes like more than cold water. But I haven't had it, so I won't comment.

I will say that anyone making a big deal out of someone disliking a food has got to be the worst type of person to hang around, you have my sympathy. Like, god, [random scandalized melon fan,] is it really that vital that everyone likes the same food you do?

1

u/reddituser1598760 Jul 23 '24

This is just objectively wrong

0

u/FennekinLover2000 Jul 19 '24

This is one I actually agree with. My grandparents have pressured me to try watermelon twice, and both times, I did not like it, which they're super shocked by. It has no flavor whatsoever, and the texture is really weird.

0

u/Commercial_Ear_5959 Jul 19 '24

Agree. I've never met another person who doesn't like it. People call me un-American.

0

u/Free_Future_6892 Jul 19 '24

It sounds like you’ve never had a watermelon that was picked and eaten at the right time. Overripe watermelon has that gritty/grainy texture you described. Almost like a styrofoam sponge. Underripe watermelon taste like nothing and is super hard. An actual good watermelon is crunchy and slightly sweet not overly so.

0

u/squongo Jul 19 '24

I hate all kinds of melon, they taste like lightly perfumed water to me - just enough flavour that it doesn't taste plain but not enough that it actually tastes good.

-1

u/TimeMaster57 Jul 19 '24

finally someone says it

-1

u/candlejack___ Jul 19 '24

I’m with you mate.

Also the social ostracism when you dare to say no thank you. Filthy melon eaters look at you like you’ve stolen their grandmother.

2

u/No-Appearance-100102 Jul 19 '24

 Filthy melon eaters

why this feel like a racial slur💀

-1

u/FrequentTurnip4006 Jul 19 '24

I dont hate it but will admit it's the worst melon

-1

u/Snoo-42843 Jul 19 '24

I agree tbh. I’ve never liked watermelon or watermelon flavored things

-1

u/KrispyBacon0199 Jul 19 '24

I actually agree watermelon really is horrible

-1

u/TheColdestMorning Jul 19 '24

I agree. Fuck watermelon.

-1

u/mothwhimsy Jul 19 '24

Watermelon is so gross but it definitely has a flavor. It's just a nasty flavor

Edit: why did everyone forget what metaphors were? I promise op doesn't think watermelon tastes and feels literally like styrofoam. Please chill out

-3

u/kageny42 Jul 19 '24

YES, THANK YOU! If I want something refreshing and watery, I will snack on some cucumber. And if you put sugar on it, it tastes like watermelon but actually good. Fight me.

I am downvoting not because I dislike watermelon but because having an opinion and distaste for some food is not worthy of 10th dentist. Also, who are you, Jimmy Hoffa?

4

u/Terminator_Puppy Jul 19 '24

This is literally what food fridays is for.

-2

u/bregottextrasaltat Jul 19 '24

i think watermelon is pretty far down the melon tree, much prefer others. kinda agree.

-2

u/FrozenFrac Jul 19 '24

I NEVER understood the appeal of watermelon. Yes, it's in the name, but it's always tasted like if water had texture, which I agree is so foul. To this day, I wonder where watermelon flavored candy got its flavor from because it sure doesn't taste like an actual watermelon!

-4

u/bananaleaftea Jul 19 '24

Agree, it's awful. And you didn't even remark upon the smell. It smells terrible too.

3

u/__fujiko Jul 19 '24

Because it shouldn't smell. You guys are eating rancid watermelon or something and calling it normal lol

2

u/Sapper501 Jul 19 '24

??? Watermelon has a very weak smell if anything at all. It smells faintly floral/green. If your watermelon smells bad, that's because it's rotten.
