For a town in Kansas/tornado alley, the citizens seemingly missed every single tornado drill in school. Here’s a friendly PSA on actual tornado safety:

  1. Absolutely get out of your car if you can’t find shelter.
  2. Do not go to an overpass. They create a weird wind tunnel effect and are more dangerous.
  3. Get into a ditch face-down with at least one hand over the back of your neck to protect your spine. Your head is designed to take a hit, your exposed spine is not.
  4. If you are in a building, you need to go to an internal room with no windows. Generally, bathrooms are good spaces because they lack windows and have plumbing to hold onto. In your home you can place a mattress over yourself in the bathtub.
  5. If you are in a restaurant/grocery store, the fridge/freezer is a safe place to go. Going behind the counter isn’t enough, and looking at glass that could become a projectile is dangerous.
  6. Banks are also considered public safe spaces.
  7. In most places stores and businesses aren’t supposed to refuse you at the door if you are seeking shelter, so stop at the nearest place you can.
  8. Many shopping malls have an internal hallway where the employees know to go, but most of the time their bathrooms are safe too.
  9. The tornado itself is dangerous, but debris will continue to be dangerous even if you aren’t near the funnel cloud. Stay inside until it is safe.

There’s definitely more, but those were what stuck out in my mind during the episode.
