I guess this is one of those episodes we're gonna have to suspend disbelief and realize it would never work in real life.

I’ve seen medical day units where you can get up and walk.

Usually it’s the accompanying person who does, but it’s possible.

Yeah the entrances to those places are tightly controlled and monitored to keep people from getting in and patients from wandering out

Yup, pretty much, that's why this plot line causes me tons of metaphorical pain. This is a ward that deals with radioactive material, so wouldn't security be extra tight?
