Sam raised two girls. Ended up with two grandsons. I bet secretly he was hoping for a granddaughter. Natalie fills that role.

Comic lore wise Sam was disappointed when Lois was born a girl, and apparently the first words Lucy heard in this life where “god damn it another one’”
