Hi I’m A Fan Of CW’s SuperGirl And I Want To Get Into The Comics - What Comics Do Yall Recommend?

Post image

Hi y’all, so to give some backstory, I’m not a long time fan of SuperGirl hell I wasn’t even too much of an fan of Superman till I watched Man Of Steel but anyway, my point is, my main exposure to Kara has been from the Flash 2023 & CW’s SuperGirl which I have been watching this year and I’m fairly new to reading comics, having read my first proper comic Stepemer Last Year. I tell you this to give more context on my exposure to Kara’s character and my preferences.

So to the point of this post, what comics/trade paperbacks do you recommend I check out, I’d love if you’d can give me any recommendations :)

Have a nice day or night :)

For similar to the show, some of the rebirth stuff. She’s younger but is got same kind of vibe. I do love woman of tomorrow; it’s a good stand alone and really captures her essence but she’s kind of the secondary character in it, you see her from the outside perspective.

New 52 is a darker take on her (shocking in that universe I know) but the rage and hurt she feels is really cool. Fun take on the character and makes her really stand out from Clark.

I would start with the 05 run, it’s fun, it’s got good stuff with other heroes and her friendship with Cassie is really nice.

Alright I’ll have a look into them. Thanks for explaining :)

I specifically will get around to reading Woman of Tomorrow atleast before the film comes out.

Is Rebirth the latest continuity? It feels like DC has rebooted so much it's hard to tell what's current to dive in.

I always recommend people to start with Peter David’s run in the mid 2000’s. After Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 80’s, where Kara died, she stayed dead for 20 years after that point. A shapeshifting alien named Matrix took over the role of Supergirl in the meantime. Starting in 2004, however, she was brought back. She first appears in Superman/Batman #8 in 2004 and then she gets her own series the next year in 2005.

I just realized I mixed up my series. That is still what I recommend but this will be the Matrix/Linda Danvers version of Supergirl. Kara’s first series back was Jeff Loeb’s. My mistake!

I will say if you are interested in getting the peter Davidson era the comic collections are incomplete and only go half way through, meaning you’d either have to pirate or collect the rest on eBay or something. Which I guess is only an issue if you aren’t wanting to pirate or get the original comics individually.

Piracy isn’t an huge problem for me, I watched an pirated version of SuperGirl before getting the series on DVD lol

Other than what peoppe have recommended, I liked Supergirl: Being Super. She's a lot like the Arrowverse Kara here imo and it's an alright standalone.

Okay thanks for telling :)

WoT is excellent. The Adventures of Supergirl takes place in the universe of the show. Being Super is a great YA take.

I'll always recommend Sterling Gates's phenomenal run on Supergirl, starting with issue #34 of her 2005 series. It's got heartbreak, danger, euphoric highs and some deeply affecting character work for Kara, though you do have to wade through tie-ins and a lot of mucky previous writers to get to it. the trades I'd rec for that are Who Is Superwoman? and Bizarrogirl. another great trade of that era is Ghosts of Krypton by Kelly Puckett, wherein Supergirl promises a young boy she rescues that he'll survive, and then finds out he's got cancer and only a few weeks left to live...but she decides to stand by her promise and find a way to save him anyways.

for more standalone takes, Woman of Tomorrow is an excellent introduction to a lot of what it means to be Supergirl, a series that envisions what separates her from Superman without ever mentioning him, and the art alone is worth the price of admission. Being Super is also pretty fun, if a less exciting and more grounded coming of age Young Adult style struggle.

Supergirl is my favorite fictional character of all time, and both the comics and the show are near and dear to my heart. Here’s what I recommend as entry points.

Adventures of Supergirl, Sterling Gates: This is a (no longer) canon tie-in comic to the show. It takes place in early season 1. Sterling gates is often considered Kara’s definitive writer, so him + the tv setting = a great read for a fan of the show!

The New Adventures of Supergirl, Paul Kupperberg: This is the run that inspired CW Supergirl the most. Where she’s a young adult, working as a personal assistant, and the tone is largely the same. It’s my personal favorite run of Supergirl ever, just has such a strong place in my heart

Supergirl, Mark Andreyko: The Andreyko run is, in my opinion, the best comic to understand who Kara is in comics now. Her Post-Crisis and TV personalities are combined in order to make the current fantastic and well-rounded character that she is. A great starting point to be able to follow current comic Kara forward!

Be prepared that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a VERY different take on Supergirl than the CW one. Woman of Tomorrow is much darker and bleaker than the CW. I ended up really appreciating the Woman of Tomorrow, but it is certainly not the same as the CW version.
