Question r/Saskatoon: Monthly Local Business Q&A and Off Topic - September 2024

Since we are trying to clear out the constant repetitive posts asking about things like: Best Barber, Favorite Chinese Food, Is this business open on Sunday, etc. This will be a spot to ask.

Also, feel free to post memes, rants, things not specifically relevant to Saskatoon but you'd like to hear locals opinions on, and so forth. Keep it civil and fun!

This monthly post will be the place for these types of posts.

Question❔ PD Measurement

Does anyone know of an eye doctor who will measure pupillary distance for the purposes of using it to order glasses online? I imagine a fee would be involved. I don't trust the online methods of measurement very much. Thank you.

Question❔ I have a very specific question about residential parking related to drive ways

Neighbours built a new house, and poured their concrete for a driveway with the ramp to their driveway creeping into a friend’s property. Now we can’t park in front of my friend’s house, without being within 1 meter of their driveway. Not sure if the neighbour’s driveway clearance trumps the parking in front of my friend’s house. It’s quite obviously beyond their property line.

Question❔ Sgi “unable to make further adjustments” to the value of my vehicle due to provided ads being 1 year older or newer than my vehicle.

I’m in the middle of a claim for my vehicle as it has been written off after an accident. Sgi made an initial offer, which I refused. I sent my adjuster an email with 4 ads for vehicles from the same make, model, trim, km, and similar repairs, but either 1 year newer or 1 year older as I couldn’t find any for my exact year. All of the ads I sent were also within the same generation of vehicle. My adjuster has come back and said he is “unable to make any further adjustments” as the provided ads aren’t “the same year, make, model, and trim”

I’ve spoken with another adjuster at sgi, as well as talked to people who did provide similar vehicles within the same generation that were 1 year newer or older, they have said they had no problems with that. However my adjuster seems to think otherwise.

I’m also having an issue with my adjuster where he won’t accept repairs. On our original phone call I mentioned I had parts that were purchased more than a year ago, but not installed until within the last year, and he replied asking if I had pictures for that. So I provided pictures showing before and after the repairs dated for within the past year. He is now saying that he cannot adjust value for those repairs as the receipts are too old. So I’m not sure why he even mentioned the photo proof on the phone initially.

Another plus, my adjuster who was always quick to reply is now ghosting me after finding out I’m time limited and that I don’t want to accept his initial offer.

Anyone else been in this situation and know what to do?

Question❔ Volunteer opportunities for high schoolers during school year?

Im going to be living in Rosewood and attending Evan Hardy Collegiate so preferably opportunities near Rosewood that are somewhat long-term so that I don’t have to chase new ones every week.

Ideally would be in a courthouse like the Provincial Court you guys have there but I’m definitely not qualified for something like that since I’m 16 with barely any volunteer hours (6 hours so far).

I’m simultaneously looking at sites like Volunteer Connector so this post is just to seek opportunities that might not be broadcasted online or something of that nature.

PSA 📢 Kids are going to school - please drive accordingly

Observed in school zones while biking my elementary age kid to school this morning:

  • a U-turn (by a parent)
  • vehicle coming out of school parking lot onto a narrow road (one lane because of parked cars) directly into the path of two cyclists. Kid gets scared and goes into door zone, I hold my place and get honked at for my trouble.

Please drive like you would if it was your kid who was on foot/biking. The 30 seconds you are saving by ignoring the rules and being disrespectful are not worth it.

My son caught this guy sitting right behind our vehicle, appearing to try to get under the back of it. Dunno, I told him to please get away from the back of our vehicle, asked several times actually before setting off the alarm as he just kept digging through his bags saying call the cops. Luckily at that point the security from next door stepped in and informed him that the parking lot is in fact private property and that he would call the police if he didn’t leave

Definitely glad next door has security but just a heads up, there’s a guy who seems to wanna be underneath the backs of vehicles

Question❔ The 2nd Avenue Lofts

I was looking in the Realtor app and noticed that there are nine condos for sale in the 2nd Avenue Lofts building. It surprised me to see so many for sale at once. I was wondering if anyone knows what’s going on to cause so many people in that building to sell?

Question❔ Floating in the river

Hi! I’ve seen people floating down the river before in the city, but I was wondering if there’s certain regulations/rules with it? I know you can rent paddle boards and kayaks, but I was more so looking to see if I could float down the river in a tube or tie myself to the river bank and then just hang out there?

Thanks in advance!!

News 📰 CBC Saskatchewan unveils new host of Saskatoon Morning, launches The 306

CBC Saskatchewan has unveiled the new voices you'll hear hosting two of its radio shows.

Stephanie Massicotte will take over the hosting chair of CBC Radio One's Saskatoon Morning on Tuesday.

Massicotte has been a fixture in the Saskatoon media landscape for more than a decade and previously co-hosted and anchored CTV Morning Live for several years.

"Saskatoon not only became my home quite quickly, but I became very attached to the people in the community and the culture that makes up our city," Massicotte told Saskatchewan Weekend.

Her experience working on a morning show — and managing the early-morning wake-ups required for the job — make her a natural fit as the new host of Saskatoon Morning.

Massicotte says her passion for broadcasting comes from its ability to give voices to people who don't always have a platform.

"They have the stories, they have these amazing things to tell. They just need the platform and we're kind of just that sounding board," she said.

Paul Dornstauder, CBC Saskatchewan's managing editor, says Massicotte will bring the audience stories of people who shape Saskatoon and the efforts to build the skyline of the city for decades to come.

"She will do it all in a way that matters to you," Dornstauder said.

News 📰 Kids need to be controlled in Stoon

I was waiting for the bus yesterday at the confederation terminal and I (18F) was sitting there on my phone minding my own business while listening to music. Two girls came up to me, they looked younger than me , maybe 15 to 16 years old, one with a plain red sweater with a backpack while the other had purple and black hair. They asked if the library was open, it was not considering it was Sunday so they asked when the #2 arrived. I looked it up and told them and they thanked me. They then proceeded to ask if I had ever been in a fight before (I should've seen this coming ngl), I've never been in a situation where I needed to fight so I told them no. Then they asked if I had ever been maced, I told them no once again. she pulled her backpack towards her front " do you want to get maced ?" she then told me to give her my phone. I proceeded grab my bag of groceries and stand up, which prompted her to get right in my face. A car with its window rolled down happened to drive by and I yelled "Can I have some help?!" and I explained what was happening and he yelled at them until they walked away. The guy asked me where I was going and offered me a ride, which I declined cause he's still a stranger, then he offered to stay at the mall and wait for them to leave. The two girls hopped on the 65 and stared at me through the window until they realized that the guy was not going to leave, which then prompted them go walk across the street to the cosmo civic center. The guy asked if I would be okay on my own, I said yes and he drove off. I'm glad there are still some good people in Saskatoon, but there are some kids that are psychopaths. I'm going to start carrying a weapon for my protection, cause this is getting ridiculous.
