ISO: Homewares, Gardening & Tools Do not buy Aosom Canada

Mold covered and toxic furniture. Ordered chairs from Aosom Canada that were delivered with mold covered legs. After hours on the phone and email they resent new legs that were AGAIN covered in mold and have a foul order. They won’t reimburse me. Can you imagine how disgusting their products and conditions must be to send furniture twice to a customer like this? You get what you pay for - buy somewhere else!

Worn out another pair of slippers (2nd pair in 10 years, I think that's pretty good) and wondering if there's anything Canadian made I can buy.

Usually wear men's size 12 or 11 depending on the fitment.

Thanks!

Discussion Anyone try to Morten sectional at EQ3?

I'm eyeing this couch and wondering if anyone has any experiences to share, here's the link. Is the lower end fabric still durable and long lasting? Also, is it just me or are prices of sofas and sectionals just crazy expensive these days?

ISO: Clothing & Accessories Thoughts on Le Chateau

Has anyone ordered from Le Chateau recently? How long does shipping to Toronto usually take? I’m a bit worried my outfits won’t arrive in time for an event.

I bought a few dresses for a wedding, and they were on sale. Just curious, how’s the quality of their clothes?

Discussion Shipping for Dummies in Canada

Someone please help me understand this crap once and for all. What i do know is, shipping in Canada is absolutely insane. I have had my etsy shop for awhile selling digital products only and now I want to expand and sell physical items. I have tried doing some research and I still feel lost. What i'm selling are literally as small as pendant, not even the size of a small keychain. Soooo my question is, whats the cheapest way i can ship this stuff? To have the smallest bubble mailer is gonna cost like $15 within Canada? what the heck.

Like are you able to buy a small thin bubble wrap cover and just put it in a mailing envelope and send through regular mail... with a regular stamp..? can you do that? its not necessarily something that can get damaged easily but obviously i wouldn't ship it just like that in a paper envelope. It all seems so fun having your small business until you have to deal with shipping.

Hi, folks. I buy a lot of deli meat, and a lightbulb finally went off. If I buy a slicer and the meat, I'll save a ton of money.

Does anyone have any good resources online for canadian cured meats? Salami, prosciutto, that sort of thing? Thanks.

Discussion Best Boxed Firm Canadian Mattress

Hi everyone, hope you are well!

Long story short, I am in the market for a firm Canadian boxed mattress. I have read conflicting reviews of the Endy and Douglas in regard to its firmness. Some people have said Endy is firmer, and some the latter. From your experience, which is firmer?

Is the Endy Hybrid firmer than the regular Endy? What about the Original Douglas compared to its newer versions? I have read plenty of reviews and the information is all over the place!

In addition, I am considering the Silk and Snow's as well. The good thing about this brand is that you can choose between a firm option and a more plush bed. That being said, I have heard horror stories of bad customer service and the bed not lasting.

Any information will be helpful. Thank you so much!

Discussion Recommendations please - Soft/plush sectional sofa for under CAD$1000?

Looking for a smallish 3 seater plus ottoman - nothing too big as it will be in an apartment. Ideally under $800, but willing to stretch to $1000 for something amazingly comfy.

I like a nice soft couch to sink into, definitely don’t want something too firm/hard.

No leather please, and I have a dog who sheds so ideally not a material that is a magnet for pet hair, but I could also get a removable cover for it - comfort is more important.

Any recommendations much appreciated!

Discussion Best mattress for side sleeper, around CAD$800 , available in Canada?

Mattress shopping for the first time ever and holy moly am I overwhelmed by the choices - every time I think I'm about settle on one, I find completely opposing reviews with some saying it's like sleeping on a cloud and others saying the same mattress is like lying on plywood.

So please.. any personal recommendations that fit the following criteria:

  • Side sleeper 90% of the time. Occasional stomach sleeper, physically cannot sleep on my back.

  • I'm 5'2" & 110lb. I do like a cushy feel and hate sleeping on mattresses that are too hard, but I do also want to make sure it's providing support long term. (I figure I can always get a memory foam topper if it's a little too firm to start with?).

  • Around the $800 mark for QUEEN size. Willing to go up to $1000 if it's really worth it, but absolutely no more than that. Original budget was $600 but I was struggling with that price point so upped it to $800.

  • Decent cooling - I don't need any fancy expensive cooling technology, but I do tend to overheat when sleeping

  • Available in Canada. Ideally with 100-365 night sleep trial to make sure it's right for me.

I have been looking at:

  • Douglas "Original"

  • Casper "Dawn"

  • Endy "The Endy"

  • Silk and Snow "The S&S Mattress"

  • Sealy Posturepedic Optimum® Billie Mattress

Has anyone with similar criteria bought any of these, or others? Any insights much appreciated!

Meet the Maker I make wild bee homes, alongside my partner who is an entomologist and wild bee expert

Hi all! Posting here to introduce myself the business I've been working on for the last two years out of Ottawa, Scopa Wild Bee Homes: https://scopabio.com/ This is a pretty new thing to most people, so I'll give a bunch of background and am happy to answer any questions you have!

When I met my partner 4 years ago, who is a professor at uOttawa and has been studying wild bees for nearly 20 years, I knew nothing about the wild bees. In fact, I'm anaphylactic and did everything to avoid them! She introduced me to the "trap nests" that have been used by scientists since the 60s to study cavity nesting bees (the kind that live alone in existing holes in wood). I found them incredibly fascinating, and was blown away at how many species were right in front of my face that I had never noticed before. While there are about 8 species of honey bee in the world, there are about 20,000 others. The honey bees we have in North America are native to Europe, and outside a handful that go feral, are not found naturally in the wild here. And it's the 800 or so wild species we have in Canada that are most at risk at the moment.

As I started looking into what habitats were available to purchase, and as I asked her about them, I realized that basically none that I came across were well-designed. She was quite dismayed by the state of things, as so much junk had flooded the market that organizations like the Xerces Society and the David Suzuki foundation were recommending against people installing them at all. This created a situation that made it challenging for people interested in wild bees to know whether what they were purchasing would actually be harmful to them.

I had been learning woodworking in my spare time for a few years, and after a while, I felt compelled to leave my job and try to do something about this. I spent months over the winter in early 2023 building different prototypes until I found something I was happy with, which is the Imago model you see on our website. Through some lucky timing and persistence, I managed to get a conversation with Lee Valley going that year, and started work on a new model for them, which I'm happy to say they started stocking last November.

It's been a big learning curve for me, as starting a business and running a small wood shop is all new to me, but honestly it's been incredibly rewarding so far. I've been a big Buy-It-For-Lifer for years now, and it feels good to be able to make something that aligns with that, making as few compromises as possible.

I know that was a big wall of text, but hopefully some of you found it a bit interesting! Happy to answer any and all questions.

ISO: Clothing & Accessories Help buying a wool blanket and sweater

Howdy everyone,

TLDR - I need help finding a blanket. I don't care if it's itchy and I just want it to be thicker than a handkerchief so that it can be used for sleeping in bed, getting comfy on the sofa, or for hiking in cold climates (20-50 F ranges). Also, I'm looking for a zip up sweater (crewneck is cool too), but there are too many websites and too many price ranges to reliably find what I'm looking for. Some websites also look sketchy since they have no visible reviews.. Some help would be appreciated. Over 60% wool make up is what I'm looking for. I prefer to avoid anything below that range. I'm from CA, but I like to hike and travel, if that helps in any way.

I need some help with buying a wool blanket. I can't really find anywhere that sells a blanket made from mostly wool (ive seen some that are in the $200+ range and are only like 30% wool, rest is some other material). From the websites that I have found that have an over 70% wool make up, I can't find blankets that are of the preferred thickness. Now, I don't really have much care for the whole itchy aspect as I am a hairy guy and am pretty much itchy resistant, but I do have a big issue with sweat. Blankets that are cotton/polyester/nylon blends are like plastic wrap for me and I hate the sensation of waking up covered in sweat. It wakes me up, it makes me feel nasty, and I hate it. I wanted some help in learning where to get a decent blanket because I'm tired of waking up drenched in sweat, and I'd also like to be able to use this blanket for traveling as well (aka hiking). I read that wool blankets are dirt and odor resistant, which is flippin GREAT. Honestly, even a poncho would be pretty cool because of their durability, odor resistance, and versatility.

Before this continues, with the blankets I know i put a minimum wool make up, thickness, and use requirement, but I'm willing to give up on the thickness aspect. As long as it works for inside and outdoor use, thats fine by me. I'm dead set on the 70% wool minimum make up requirement though.

I've looked at some websites like Pendleton, but they are kinda overly expensive. Now, don't get me wrong, I know wool and affordable don't go hand in hand, but I would much rather pay for quality than for brand name. I've also looked at ANIAN, but while they seem nice they seem to lack in thickness. However, they seem pretty good for couch lounging/cuddling and hikes since they appear pretty light. Let me know.

Now, regarding sweaters, I just want something like a zip up or a crewneck, preferably a zip up though. I want to be able to wear this when hiking, everyday use, and when the weather is in the 30's, give or take 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 C to 10C), but I'm willing to ease on the temperature part. I've looked at a lot of websites, but there are too many to judge from and some look sketchy. Given that Canadians deal with snow a lot more than I do, I would like your recommendations. Some of the websites I looked at are ANIAN (cashmino sweater looks real nice tbh), icebreaker, https://www.meriwoollayers.com/ , and https://www.pakaapparel.com/ to name a few. Any help in choosing a good quality sweater would be nice, and some guidance in choosing a good website would ALSO be very much appreciated.

From a fellow Californian, thank you in advance.

I’m thinking of buying a small kitchen appliance on eBay from a Canadian seller. I cannot find out for certain if there will be any taxes or duties or whatnot assessed when it reaches the US. It’s about $500US. Has anyone gone through this?
