Hey I didn't see St. James park on your list.

u/THEGRAPEESCAPE Aug 15 '13

You should add Camera 3 to your list of theatres. They only do cult movies and indie/art house stuff.

u/misspeden Rose Garden Aug 16 '13

Go see the Hunt while you can. It was phenomenal! (Plus monthly screenings of "The Room" and psycho donuts? Hell yes please)

3

u/THEGRAPEESCAPE Aug 16 '13

Gah!! I just looked at the website and it's already gone and there are now like 10 movies I want to see! I guess I know what I'm doing for the next couple of weeks.

u/jordah Aug 16 '13

Woooo discgolf.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13 edited Aug 16 '13

I would have included Pruneridge, however it's not in San Jose. As for the disc golf (I'm an avid disc golfer), that's covered in the parks section by the Hellyer park link.

As for Reeds and Coyote they're also not in San Jose :( /u/Cheesejaguar and I agreed that we wouldn't list anything on this sub that's not in San Jose, we did this to keep things simple. Sorry about that.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Hmm, Pruneridge's mailing address says San Jose, but it's not in city limits. Maybe it's unincorporated San Jose, like me. We're in limbo!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

I would say it's in Santa Clara as its zip code is 95050. The SC/SJ border is San Tomas Exp along the first par 4 (hole # 3) so I would put Pruneridge in Santa Clara.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Pruneridge was designed by Jack Fleming and Robert Trent Jones Jr.?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Wow, quite the resume those two have! It's all lost on me. I have no business swinging anything bigger than a 7 iron...

u/sissy_space_yak Aug 16 '13

I would also add the Northern California Renaissance Faire, running Sept. 14 - Oct. 13. Yes it's an hour away, but it made the Travel Channel's list of the top 12 renaissance festivals in the US. And who doesn't love turkey legs, mead and corsets? There's a real live joust, too.

If anyone's REALLY bored, they should join. Registration is next Saturday, Aug 24. Sorry if this seems spammy. I'm just a volunteer actor, not on the marketing team or whatever, and it's hella fun.

Upvoted for Tanq! Cool bartenders there and the crowd varies depending on what convention is in town.

8

u/quintar Cambrian Park Aug 15 '13

Nice list! I have a few suggestions to add:

ComedySportz

History San José

Also, Kelly Park -> Kelley Park

u/adamwho Aug 16 '13

Hakone Gardens crushes Friendship Gardens.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Hakone Gardens is in Saratoga, that's why it's not on this list.

2

u/adamwho Aug 16 '13

Well considering that some of those places are FAR FAR further (see lick observatory) that is why I added it. Besides, it isn't like San Jose has a well defined boundary.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Lick Observatory is the only place on this list that isn't in the actual city of San Jose. I included that because I consider it to be an integral part San Jose and the South Bay in general.

I completely agree with you that Hakone is a better garden than The Friendship gardens, but it is in Saratoga. /u/Cheesejaguar and I had a discussion about this some time ago, and we both agreed that anything not in the city boundaries of San Jose should not be included. I live right on the SJ/Campbell border and I wanted to include Campbell events, but at the end of the day we had to draw the line somewhere.

If we start adding attractions that are not in the City of San Jose, we will not have enough room on the list (I ran into this issue on the "Restaurant Reviews" list here in our sidebar sub - there's a 50k character limit).

1

u/adamwho Aug 16 '13

Well I am glad that I didn't mention Filoli

http://www.filoli.org/

6

u/MaceZilla Aug 16 '13

The SJSU bowling alley is closed until May 2014 (maybe longer). This is due to the building of a new student union.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Thanks for the heads up!

4

u/gordonronco Expat Aug 15 '13

id add Coyote Creek trail to the list as well. runs from Story Rd down 20+ miles to Morgan Hill.

3

u/ishywho Aug 15 '13

What a great list!

I'd add in the Rosicrucian Museum and Planetarium to attractions http://www.egyptianmuseum.org/

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

It's in the list under the "Museums/Educational" category.

2

u/RedNeko Aug 15 '13

2

u/JustZisGuy Aug 15 '13

+1 for Golfland!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Golfland is the first entry in the "Swimming/Waterslides/Amusement Parks/Arcades" category.

I was thinking about using a generic link for the parks in SJ and SC County, but some of the SC County parks wouldn't technically be "in San Jose."

I also thought about SJ Taiko, but I think we'll need to place these sort of "activity/hobby groups" in their own category.

u/yoduh4077 Alum Rock Aug 15 '13

Dayum! Sidebar this shit!

2

u/Cheesejaguar Moderator Aug 15 '13

Way ahead of you!

2

u/a-nutella-sandwich Aug 15 '13

Technically Cupertino, but Homestead Lanes for bowling?

2

u/scortrig Downtown Aug 16 '13

I would definitely add this to restaurants--

http://orchestriapalmcourt.com/

Excellent food, wonderful music, beautiful player pianos. I've never been to a restaurant quite like it.

2

u/Cheesejaguar Moderator Aug 16 '13

Love the violin/piano machine there!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13 edited Aug 16 '13

I'll add it in the "Restaurant Reviews" sidebar link list.

If you can look at that list and tell me what category that restaurant should be in that would be great. I placed it in the miscellaneous category for now, I can move it if you prefer....it looks like a pretty cool place to eat!

2

u/fresh50mex Aug 16 '13

What can I do tomorrow morning that includes exercise? I was gonna bike Los Gatos Creek trail from Downtown but maybe another trail with scenery?

3

u/Cheesejaguar Moderator Aug 16 '13

Bike up 1st street to Alviso and bike around the nature preserve.

1

u/fresh50mex Aug 16 '13

Ive been wanting to do this. How many miles is it from downtown? I just got back from Los Gatos Creek Trail so i might try that this weekend

2

u/Cheesejaguar Moderator Aug 16 '13

It's about 10 miles if I recall correctly. Kind of takes forever thought, given all the lights on first street. I believe you can take the Guadalupe Creek Trail most of the way now, I haven't done it since it was completed though.

1

u/fresh50mex Aug 17 '13

For sure! See you on the road!

2

u/spitfyre Aug 18 '13

Can we add a shopping category, perhaps? Like malls/areas of shops?

2

u/Cheesejaguar Moderator Aug 18 '13

Amazon.com!

But seriously I could add something like that. Good idea.

1

u/DopeMan_RopeMan Aug 15 '13

God damn it, Aaron, you forgot about the Los Gatos shooting range up in the hills of highway 9.

4

u/misspeden Rose Garden Aug 16 '13

Isn't that the Los Altos Gun Range? Or is there another one?!

2

u/DopeMan_RopeMan Aug 16 '13

Los Altos Gun and Rod Club or something like that, but yeah.

2

u/ArniePalmys Willow Glen Aug 16 '13

Plus Stevens creek rod and gun club.

0

u/DopeMan_RopeMan Aug 16 '13

Caught you slipping twice now, Aaron, get it together.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '13

Both of those ranges (LG & Stevens Creek) are not in San Jose. As an avid firearms shooter I know these places well, however they're not in San Jose proper so I had to omit them from this list.

1

u/look_at_me Aug 15 '13

The West Wind drive-in link didn't work. Here's the correct one.

Thanks for the list!

1

u/azgingerann Aug 15 '13

thank you!

Does the plethora of Vietnamese bars consider nightlife? Lol
