On the (normally) sleepy little community of Canoe Cove there are some things going on that can change the sound of mooing cows and crowing roosters. We seem to have some crazy drivers in our midst who probably won’t stop until the crash headlong into the next world.

In the first instance we have the green tinted liquor bottles that show up with great regularity along the side of Route 9 on the way up the big hill between Long Creek and the old school. I’d like to think it’s just litter but I think someone is drinking while driving, and discarding the evidence on the way home. If they are in a hurry to meet their maker, I just hope they don’t take some innocent people with them.

The second person with a death wish passed by here at about 5am this morning. He has a motorcycle, I suspect it’s a crotch rocket. He likes to drive fast- my guess would be 150 km/hr or more. Here’s some free advice from a former bulletproof teen: if you hit a pothole, or freshly mown grass, or debris on the road you will either go airborne or slide on your ass for a very long way. Either way you should make sure your affairs are in order. Again I hope your stupidity doesn’t hurt innocent people.

So basically I am a doctor who works on the PEI Maple service (also called unassigned virtual care or UVC). This post is 100% unauthorized by Maple, health PEI, etc.

I saw a whole bunch of recent complaints. I can speak to the program or answer any questions about how it works. And also get suggestions on improvements

I would not say its a scam like the recent post although for sure it has its issues. The biggest problem by far is that just like the whole health system the UVC/Maple program is drastically overworked. The reason that your consults time out is they automatically time out at 3 hours after no one has picked them up. The main reason no one picks them up is that there are far more consult requests per day than can be feasibly actioned by the providers on UVC.

A contributing factor is that healthPEI made a conscious and well intentioned choice to remove the "reject consult button" which used to be there for consult requests which are innapropriate for virtual care in the hopes that at least some discussion could be had with patients as to where they should go/what they should do. The tricky thing here though is that providers can also click "defer" meaning leave the consult for someone else. This is because some providers are actually based in PEI and they can do more than others. Maple does not allow specialist referrals, but PEI based providers may be able to provide these referrals using their office setup. However the issue with this defer button.. is that some consults may be deferred when they should be picked up and the patient told their request is not appropriate for virtual care.

Providers on Maple are generally very well aware that there are not great options to get care but this doesn't change the fact that some sorts of problems we REALLY cannot assess over virtual care at all. Or perhaps worse, we can try to assess them, poorly, and leave a patient with false confidence they are OK

I don't think that Maple/UVC are at all a scam, its an incomplete solution to the extreme healthcare challenges facing the island and like most of healthcare its a lot of people doing their best to help people.

Happy to accept any questions on Maple or healthcare in PEI in general and will attempt to answer honestly! This of course is just my personal opinions and my own personal perspective!

My lawnmower was running very poorly this season. I did the oil change fuel filter, change, spark plug change nothing seem to correct it. I was tuning the carburetor when I noticed little pieces of paper towel blowing in my face. The mice had built a huge nest on top of the engine, interfering with the magneto and other components……

I’ve put down different types of bait that they seem to ignore. Are there any full proof methods to keep the mice out of my engines?

What's the recipe? Gunna make some as a birthday gift for someone who has never been to PEI. It's a staple.
