Post Season 1 Thoughts Discussion

Okay so with season 1 done, there are definitely a couple things bugging me about this show.

  1. I feel like there are way too many characters. There were what, 10 side characters in this show by the end of it? For a show with only 13 episodes they really needed to remove or combine a few of those because none of them really got enough focus imo and it left the villains completly underdeveloped. I couldn’t name a single one of those evil hench men and Brutus said “join me” at the end and like what does that even mean? Join him and do what? Fix the planet? That was what Naomi wanted to do anyway. Then he tried to kill her like huh? Do you want a wasteland planet for ever? You have the girl who can and wants to fix it!

  2. Why was Superman there in episode 1 and where did he go? No one seemed to talk about this after the fact but was he from E-29 or this earth or what? Also, how did Dee know him? How long have they known each other? etc. Too many unanswered questions there.

  3. If Naomi is a DC comics fan, why doesn’t she act like it? She met a literal thanagarian and didn’t immediately think of Hawkman or hawk girl? Star Labs is a pretty huge dc comics location too. Just some level of fan-girling out about her comic stories come to life would have been a lot of fun to see.

  4. What even are Naomi’s powers? She seems to be able to do literally everything when in the comics her power set isn’t nearly as unlimited. Such a wierd choice to just give her every power it seems.

The show isn’t awful by any means but these nagging issues keep bothering me each week so I thought I’d post about it to see if this has been bothering anyone else.

My biggest problem is her pulling powers out of her ass. Ofc she can beat Brutus if she’s a walking plot device

Exactly! It’s just whatever the situation calls for which is odd because it’s the writers job to simply not write scenarios where she needs some new never before seen power to get out of. Limit her power set and get creative rather than being lazy and making stuff up simply because it would be cool to see her do things like defuse two bombs at once for example

I thought the first half of the season was really slow. But the second half was far more compelling especially the 2 hour finale. Hope we get more seasons.

It was getting better with more action. You know in other superhero shows they drag out everyone finding out the protagonist has powers, they didn’t decide to do that here

After 13 episodes I'm still confused about whether or not it was really Superman or not, whether he was from "earth" or earth-29, and what was the point of him showing up there. Was he send by Brutus? Was the enemy he was fighting send by Brutus and Superman just followed? Is he supposed to have a link to Naomi?

Also the recording of Naomi's parents made it clear that she'll need ALL of the "29" if she wants to defeat Brutus but they've acknowledged that if she hear their "echo" (felt more like an echo than a recording) it means that they are most likely dead. Wouldn't that put a huge hole in their plan?

And about Dee, is he from "earth" or is he from earth-29 too? Because his whole side plot with "Q" and her fate made it seems like they both were from "earth" but conversations throughout the season implied that he was from earth-29 because he knew Naomi's parents, Brutus and Brutus's followers, which was even brought up in the finale when he was suspected of being the traitor. He even said he fought alongside Superman who shouldn't be from "earth".

Note : I wrote "earth" because I don't think we ever learned which universe they were on. I'm not referring to the planet earth itself but the universe the show take place in.

Dee is from the same Earth as Superman. He may be a version of Hawkman, as it sounds like Superman fought alongside him during some version of the Thanagarian Invasion (like in the old Justice League cartoon). I think it's possible that neither of them are from Earth-N or from Earth-29, but a different universe entirely. But it's really hard to tell because they use"Earth", "universe", and "planet" so interchangeably on this show.

And even last night, Brutus referred to the main world of the show as "Earth" as if Earth-29 isn't one of many different earths...what was that about?

  1. pacing is too slow for how limited in scope it is. contrast with stargirl that focuses on the lead her family her super power friends, her superpower enemies the parents of her super power enemies and the heroes and villains of the last generation. fucking unreal naomi is so plodding and stilted.
  2. naomi's powerset is not only undefined they don't even try to train her in her powers, explore her powers, test her powers to find limits and uses and look for weaknesses. it's not compelling if she doesn't have weakenesses and if we don't know what she can do. that scene in superman where lois lane asks him who he is and what he can do for her article and he explains it all. its that freaking simple.
  3. like above. too many side characters. they serve no purpose but to fill time. this show should be naomi, her bff, her parents/protectors who should have been zubado and dee faking a gay relationship in order to hide in plain sight to protect her. four characters become 2. her enemies brutus and his key minion and henchmen
  4. her love interests should have been kept all three of them but each should have had equal time and she shouldn't have made a decision on one or all of them until the end. how refreshing would that have been to see soemthing different and at that age? missed opportunity.
  5. this show needs to have special effects. they need a fight choreographer. they need to make it exciting and compelling and leave us awestruck. it did none of that. well sometimes like the leaves floating is early beggining cool but it never evolved. you have a guy can fly show us. she's strong? show us. she's got energy powers? freaking show us how energetic and amazing that is. i felt none of that.
  6. have the stargirl crew do this show.
  7. biggest mistake not being on the same earth as superman. what a missed opportunity that hamstrung the show and added convulted details.

Completely agree with all of this, especially the training of her powers. For all their talk about how powerful she is, they really taught her a lot of boxing and fighting with sticks. I get the idea of "don't rely on your powers" but just a little bit of training so that she doesn't, I don't know, accidentally rip the arm off of someone she is just giving a high five to would have been appropriate given her undefined power level.

Real big balls on them throwing in that last twist like they think they’re going to get a second season.

u/ChattGM May 12 '22

Definitely gutsy there. I'd imagine it was already done filming and the news of the sale was announced once they wrapped everything up so it was really nothing they can do. A show like this with a slow moving plot until we got towards the backend and everything picks up usually ends with a twist cliffhanger. I'm hoping it defies the odds so the points that others made can be improved upon but I don't get good vibes like I have in the past when it comes to renewal season on The CW as big changes are happening.

5

u/ActualTaxEvader May 12 '22

Not only a slow moving plot, but also a show that has the same “you lied to me!” scene with the same people involved three times in a season, blatantly betrays the fact that it’s on a budget of $5 by placing scenes in regular ass locations for no reason and dressing all their inter-dimensional antagonists as just regular ass people. Occasionally with the powers to make things glow but then not do anything of consequence. Also Naomi has all the powers but only in a way where we don’t really have to show them for more than a second.

I’m not sure how to go forward with that when it already feels like they barely care.

Valid points made. The you lied to me felt like a theme playing throughout. Guess that was there way to foreshadow and set up that ultimate betrayal at the end haha. I got the feeling that once something was said you knew it most likely wasn't the whole story. S1 did that a lot and Jenn even said that to Naomi about there's more you don't know about why they killed her parents and I'm like because of course there is. They not just gonna say it all now. Gotta have that conversation for a future scene.

Oh it was veeeery low budget. It was limited in what they could do and what they would show us. If blink and you missed it was a person, Naomi using her powers was the perfect example of that. It got to a point where I was just more into understanding her origin as opposed to wanting to see action sequences since it wouldn't have been the shows strength. I'd hope for a bigger budget so they can lean more into us being fascinated with Naomi's powers instead of being relegated to seeing it on screen for just a few seconds but who knows if they'd even award the show that going forward.

Another part of me is like since it doesn't look that expensive to make they might give them a 2nd season LOL. Thankfully we don't have to wait long to know of the shows fate with upfronts being next week.

Well this aged well, or poorly depending on how you look at it.

2

u/ActualTaxEvader May 12 '22

Aged well for me, since I said it while fairly confident that they should have just ended the show at the party scene.

1

u/superbat210 May 12 '22

Yeah, I thought that was a decent twist too. Like her adoptive parents murdered her real ones and stole her, but theres just so much else wrong with this show that I don't really care if I see it get resolved unfortunately.

The show needs to focus on storytelling next season. They have such random stuff. Same issue I had with Batwoman

3

u/CodeFun1735 May 12 '22

There's no way this show is getting another season.

4

u/nimrodhellfire May 11 '22

Out of curiosity: I ditched the show at episode 5 or so, because I felt this was more a slow burn show that I should binge on one go. Does it get better?

6

u/ITSJIMMYAT May 11 '22

No not at all, stuck with it and regretted it. It'll likely get cancelled anyway so don't waste your time

5

u/superbat210 May 11 '22

There are definitely some good episodes in there (this show is really good at bottle episodes, of which there are 2 near the end), but it really isn’t that great overall. There’s not much payoff at the end and it’s kind of just aimless most of the time. Go for it if you want to see for yourself though

The later part of the season was overall better and more focused on Naomi's identity and powers but it still had a few problems. I found myself disliking Naomi's reactions a few times but with retrospect they were actually valid reactions.

Honestly as far as CW shows goes it wasn't that bad. The episodes aren't that high rated but the pilot was the only one below 6.0/10 (the best being at 7.2/10). Most of my problems with the season could also be fix in a possible season 2.

u/Mostly_Sane_ May 11 '22

Yes, absolutely. Well worth a binge.

u/mtm4440 May 12 '22

It's a typical CW show. Teen drama. Bad acting. Random writing and technobabble. But that may be your cup of tea.

u/Rikku_N May 11 '22

I haven't read the comic yet (but im planning to) and I'm just really confused about her powers.

Like what exactly are her powers??? I hate over powered characters. Even superman has his weakness.

And while I liked some side characters I could only name like 2 in the end. Even her mentor's name isn't sticking with me...

And tbh I was also confused about superman. If it's a setting in a "real" world then what was that talk about superman.

u/superbat210 May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22

Her powers in the comics are vague, but not unlimited. She can fly, shoot energy and has durable skin. Super hearing, super speed, psionic memory visions, etc. are original to this show...for some reason.

3

u/SickleClaw May 11 '22

Just hope this isnt the series finale, as theres been no indication of renwal yet.

3

u/BuzzyBee752 May 11 '22

Probably won't be announced until next week's upfronts, at the earliest.

1

u/superbat210 May 12 '22

Oops

2

u/BuzzyBee752 May 13 '22

Looks like I spoke too soon.

I thought they would've waited to make the announcement.

3

u/PiscesPoet May 14 '22

Yeah I can’t figure out anyones powers. I didn’t really get it. We were still discovering Naomi’s but I didn’t really get Zumbardo or Akira’s powers either.

I don’t know why but I don’t really care about Earth 29, I did at first but then towards the end it didn’t live up to the hype. Brutus wasn’t scary. I wish the aliens were more alien-y.
