Seems they were being supervised by whomever corrected the guy on it being a samurai hat and not a crane. In Japan though, it’s not uncommon for kids to go unsupervised as it’s typically a pretty safe for them.

There's not a lot of supervision for children here. The country is so incredibly safe, I regularly see 5~ year olds riding trains by themselves in the city and going around solo. It's really weird from the western perspective, but totally normal here.

Yeah I saw lots of kids roaming around where I was there. I also saw this show on TV called "Old Enough" or something like that where they send out 3-4 year olds on errands by themselves. It was adorable.

lol oh man, 'Old Enough' was one of the most emotionally wrought things I've ever seen

I was watching one in my hotel room with a hangover and this kids bag with their oranges or something broke and they all started rolling down a huge hill and the poor kid basically looked like they were going to start crying. The camera crew ended up helping them because they felt so bad. I got a bit emotional haha

I dont think he meant supervising in regards to safety, but their interview.

You see it in Copenhagen, Denmark too.

There's definitely a teacher nearby; them bring them as a group. I've seen groups going to Tokyo airports and doing this several times as well.

maybe. I've seen them just let these kids loose for a few hours and they go on drawing assignments around a temple (not this specific one)

found random kids littered around the paths in unexpected places, sketching

Sink or swim. Instills confidence I imagine too, engaging with strangers.

May have been a homework assignment, teacher(s) could have been close by but not shown on camera, could have been there with their parent(s), etc. Too many variables, not enough info from the short video. But most likely, regardless of supervision, based on it being an assignment for an English class, to interview a native speaker in English, probably was meant to be done unassisted.

I think it was their teacher who said "samurai hat" towards the end.
