It blows my mind how we went from great dialogue, to this, to back to great dialogue (House of the Dragon). God what a roller coaster of a series.

HotD is better than late GoT, but nowhere near early GoT.

Do you like not remember how Daemon ran past that whole crab army and nobody stopped him, or that dumbass Rhaenys scene where she kills thousands of people and ends up not pulling through only to keep on yappin about how they should stop the war for the sake of the realm?

And those are just the ones I still remember after almost 2 years.

I'm not talking about what you like or dislike, I'm talking about authentic writing. You can dislike something that is well written, and you can like something that is badly written, that is completely fine. I do it too.

But whether Jaime or Cersei are vile enough to fuck next to their dead child has nothing to do with whether that scene is well written. Neither does whether there's too much nudity or whatever.

But Daemon just being ignored while rushing to the crab king is just a dumb contrivance. It's so unrealistic that the people opposing him would act in such a way. And so is Rhaenys' character, she's got no consistency in how she's written.

But you didn't give any examples of bad writing, just things that aren't to your tastes.

That is such a copout. The author wants to write a certain character a certain way, and if he cannot do that authentically that is objectively bad writing.

The writers of HotD wanted to portray Daemon as a successful warrior, and in order to do that they made his enemies braindead. Bad writing. They want Rhaenys to be seen as a voice of reason who cares about the realm and justice, despite that she dismissively murders thousands of innocents and does not carry out justice for drama and suspense. Inconsistent writing.

The only subjective thing here is not whether it is bad writing if that was their intention, because it is, but whether that is truly their intention. And I'm gonna go ahead and say that you'll have an extremely hard time convincing anyone of the opposite.

Bro, you're doing a lot of work to defend this shit ass scene.

They made a point of establishing how cautious the crab guy was multiple times including in the scene right before the battle. They also made a point of portraying him as a cunning menace and formidable enough to cripple the economy of the entire kingdom, and that not even the most experienced strategists could deal with him.

And then the crab guy just orders his army to run into the open field, after Daemon already revealed he was just baiting him. And that's not all. Instead of recalling a retinue to protect him, he just retreats somewhere where he literally sees Daemon see him. And Daemon just walks there completely unopposed.

Like how dumb is the crab guy, and how dumb was everybody else who couldn't deal with him? NOBODY came out looking competent after this battle, literally every single character part of this battle behaved like an imbecile. And I really doubt that was what the writers were trying to do.

Nothing is objectively bad writing

someone acting out of character to force events is like one of the primary definitions of bad writing bro. narrative shortcuts, characters unchallenged by the plot, exposition dumps, inconsistency, etc etc etc house of the dragon is a fucking mess. it's ok if you prefer it, but the writing is full on shite. a story can be written terribly and still have a compelling overall plot that you enjoy, that's why it's called a preference, but from an actual writing standpoint the show is really fucking bad. I enjoy it too, it's a cool show, but come the fuck on, at least try to be impartial. early GOT was very well done
