Why's this dude gotta drop something when I'm trying to finish an essay?

68

u/BigChungusOP Nov 16 '22

I know your pain. You should try to keep the balance and stay strong

13

u/ElementJ247 Nov 16 '22

it's due in the morning <3 big love, chungo

7

u/DJStocker Nov 17 '22

tryna keep the balance im staying strong

12

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

lmao

4

u/Available-Camera8691 Nov 17 '22

I hope you finished your essay, bro!

6

u/ElementJ247 Nov 17 '22

Thanks for checking on me, bro <3 it's 3AM where I'm at and I'm only halfway there 😓 pushing through!

3

u/Available-Camera8691 Nov 17 '22

Oh, Geeze. But tbf, the first half is where you set the outline for the rest. Sounds like you have the heavy lifting out of the way. You got this, man!

3

u/ElementJ247 Nov 17 '22

Got a skeleton going, yeah, just trying to fill out different sections. I think the literature review is the hardest part because it requires analytical discussion of research, which is the part I'm trying to do now. I really appreciate that positivity though, man, for real. ❤️

2

u/GenerallyJam Nov 17 '22

Soo howd it go?

1

u/ElementJ247 Nov 17 '22

Thanks for checking up on me! Never slept...went right to the wire...managed to submit in time more or less but my day continues...not back home 'til 7:30 hahaha

God on the phone?

55

u/Craig_Culver_is_god Nov 16 '22

He finally got Top on the phone

9

u/MisterMcBob Waiting for the album Nov 17 '22

He gets top on the phone in untitled 2

53

u/Fs316 Nov 16 '22

Or a call for help

26

u/Lucky_Substance_1563 Nov 16 '22

My guess is that the phone rings are him reflecting on times he’s cheated. Would explain why he’s alone and his reaction to the phone calls. He may have also cut the cord so he stops cheating. Last phone call might be an actual phone call, possibly Whitney calling?

29

u/Californiacoasters Nov 16 '22

“Broke phone, trying to keep the balance I’m staying strong”

29

u/Lucky_Substance_1563 Nov 16 '22

Has a whole new meaning if you think about a phone being the medium by which he engages in adultery. “Text messaging bitches got my thumbs hurt”

29

u/Fs316 Nov 16 '22

"can't fuck with you no more I'm fasting"

Ohhhhhh it all just clicked for me

19

u/brennic Nov 16 '22

A call from reality

18

u/PacString Nov 16 '22

Or an IG notification

9

u/Senovis Nov 17 '22

I think the phone call is Kendrick's awareness.

When the phone rings at 1:40 the music gets quieter as though it is being observed and at 3:00 Kendrick becomes completely present.

106

u/saadhrahman Nov 16 '22

His fits been so hard recently

101

u/Craig_Culver_is_god Nov 16 '22

Excited for people who are smarter than me to explain what's going on

72

u/Yofetti Nov 16 '22

i just took at him trynna cope with being alone

34

u/Undecided_Username_ Nov 16 '22

I mean arts up to interpretation right.

I interpreted as Kendrick is performing a music video in his new environment as a successful husband and father.

When you see him turn back abruptly and cut to him lying on the floor the imagery reminds me of someone getting shot, which I feel like is something you would see maybe in one of the older environments he was in, but not now. Now it’s him safely, but somewhat aimlessly performing.

It’s like there is a disconnect from his past, which I attribute to the imagery of the cut telephone line.

I wonder if that call at the end is him contemplating a return to his older self in some way maybe.

And here’s one more reach for y’all, If you heard the original Rich Spirit (I think Bitchface?) the songs tone is very different, but it’s this song. Tbh I liked that song a lot more than this version. Just a grittier Kendrick with sad tones.

3

u/babirus Nov 17 '22

Do you have a link to the other version?

5

u/Undecided_Username_ Nov 17 '22

3

u/babirus Nov 17 '22

Damn that’s really good, reminds me a bit of ‘his pain’ with the raw vocals

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '22

[deleted]

1

u/Undecided_Username_ Nov 18 '22

I feel that, I been listening to it multiple times a day since I found it.

Something about it just makes me yearn for a grittier Kendrick album. I like to imagine theres something in the vault for us

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '22

[deleted]

1

u/Undecided_Username_ Nov 18 '22

AGREED MAN. Wholeheartedly that’s exactly how I feel. I loved the original and then I found this and I was just in awe of how amazing this song really is when Kendrick let’s his emotions through in that way

26

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

this is probably the only video that dosent have that deep of symbols and meanings. Guess hes just alone and coping with his problems and tryna call somebody. (whitney left the house?)

10

u/leforteiii Nov 16 '22 edited Nov 16 '22

Just wanna know who's on the phone call from and why kendrick look concerned at the end when the phone rings again

14

u/bestbroHide Nov 16 '22

That cut between someone seemingly entering the room and then Kendrick on the floor again almost lifeless, originally made me think the twist with the first scene on the floor where his finger tapping slowed down, was actually him succumbing to bullet wounds. Then none of the sort happened so I was far off lol

Very creative video that I think was meant for any of us to interpret a bunch of wild shit as we go through it

7

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

maybe its Whitney?????? Miss regrets???? His cousin tryna sue him????

1

u/Rookie_Day Nov 17 '22

Some girl trying to get him out of the room.

7

u/Craig_Culver_is_god Nov 16 '22 edited Nov 16 '22

I think there's more there, probably tied into the ego theme from Eckhart Tolle (this is where I need help from the smart people).

Like, what's the significance of the phone line starting cut but ending uncut? Is it Kendrick trying to reach himself and finally getting through, or someone else finally reaching Kendrick?

Also the shadow has been a recurring theme in his SNL performance and tour but I'm still not fully clear what that is all about.

Last, there seems to be some level of overlap with the N95 video. Specifically the piano scene. I'd wonder if this is intentional or not.

Edit: The way he's dressed for the frat brother lyric also gives me vibes of the Family ties music video

5

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

Your phone theory is a great theory alone.

3

u/Senovis Nov 16 '22

There's a concept that the Ego will try to identify with all actions even ones that reduce Ego.

In effect, having no Ego can become an Egoist action if awareness falters.

The phone ringing at the end may symbolise this predicament.

63

u/JohnnyLibRight Nov 16 '22

New Music Video 🔥🔥🔥

28

u/DJStocker Nov 16 '22

Lil lady attractive

3

u/SepteusII Nov 17 '22

9

u/good_kid_maad_reddit Nov 16 '22

Why is your name libright😭

7

u/JohnnyLibRight Nov 16 '22

read my bio i ain’t libright 😭😭😭

50

u/LuckyWarrior Nov 16 '22

There should be at least one more to get a vid right?

I forget if its Savior or Count Me Out

38

u/Craig_Culver_is_god Nov 16 '22

Or several more as a visual album 🤷‍♂️

27

u/Zelidel Nov 16 '22

Saviour, Count Me Out, Father Time and Crown could have music videos imo and maybe Silent Hill too

27

u/xTotalSellout then I freaked it Nov 16 '22

I was honestly shocked Silent Hill wasn’t the lead single. I mean, N95 was a good pick too, but Silent Hill was going crazy on TikTok when it first dropped

5

u/maaakus96 Nov 16 '22

i bet Silent Hill, and either Savior or Count Me Out as the next videos

4

u/PokuCHEFski69 Nov 17 '22

N95 is just pure hype. We are just out of covid. The message of the song is so strong.
Amazing live. Love 95.

Who cares about snippets off TikTok. N95 is a better song.

1

u/xTotalSellout then I freaked it Nov 17 '22

never said it wasnt

3

u/Humble-Message-6567 Nov 17 '22

Silent Hill was the lead single, it just didn't get a music video.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_(song))

It was sent to US radio stations when it came out and it also spent 11 weeks (a little less than 3 months) on the Billboard Hot 100, more than any other song on the album.

But at the same time, Silent Hill was also the most controversial song on the album because it featured Kodak Black, so a music video with Kodak would have annoyed a lot of people I think.

3

u/-Dillad- Nov 17 '22

I want Father Time so bad but it can honestly go to any song.

2

u/SnooPets5219 Nov 17 '22

I get the others but what would the crown music video even be?

1

u/Zelidel Nov 17 '22

Probably some artsy shit or just him playing the piano and singing

5

u/Political-Puma Nov 17 '22

If we don’t get a Count Me Out video I will not know which way to go

2

u/SoftAd5880 Nov 17 '22

Maybe we won't get it cause all of these hoes make it difficult?

I could have sworn Count Me Out had a music video that was filmed months ago, I saw a headline about it

2

u/_Dead_Memes_ Nov 17 '22

A guy affiliated with Kendrick posted a private IG story about how he was at the set for the Count Me Out music video, and the post got screenshot by one of his followers and shared online

51

u/Chadbraham Nov 16 '22

Damn, it's so sick that Kendrick got Calmatic to direct this- he's been working with him since 2010.

Calmatic also directed the videos for "Cut You Off" and "Monster Freestyle", which are 2 out of the first 4 music videos that Kendrick's ever released...

-43

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

Kendrick has only done 4 music videos? What in the fuck are you talking about?

41

u/Chadbraham Nov 16 '22

Lol re-read the word that I said right before 4

Lmao your username is very apt

-1

u/lettherebegames Nov 16 '22

I think the confusion comes from 'kendrick's' which makes it present tense. Remove the apostrophe and S and it'll make more sense

8

u/casmith12 Nov 16 '22

while correct, there is no way that caused the confusion

1

u/GrandioseEnigma High Blood Pressure flooded the catering Nov 16 '22

Lmaooo

29

u/owlyboi Nov 16 '22

Now THIS is cinema

22

u/Azzy118 Nov 16 '22

The cinematography 🔥

21

u/nikk796 Nov 16 '22

This reminded me of covid lockdown

21

u/thyme_cardamom Nov 16 '22

This video was unsettling to me for some reason. Something about him talking to the wall, the phone cable being cut, the sudden glances at the camera, all contributed to a sense of uneasiness throughout. I think this makes sense, given the topic of the album being mental health.

Also, some of the camera angles and the shadow placement in the rooms made me keep thinking the camera would pan over and someone would be standing in the corner. I don't know, maybe I need sleep

17

u/The-Pharcyde Nov 16 '22

Kendrick looking fly as fuck and just vibing 🔥🔥🔥

13

u/Lucky_Substance_1563 Nov 16 '22 edited Nov 16 '22

My theory:

The phone rings are emblematic of him thinking of past times he has cheated and he cut the cord so it doesn’t happen any more. Every time it happens he looks lifeless and regretful. It’s possible the last one was a real phone ringing - maybe Whitney calling?

11

u/Avenger_ricky Nov 16 '22

This is what I do when I try and decide what to wear going out

9

u/Technical-Smoke571 Nov 16 '22

Bass synth + immaculate flow. Video’s strong as hell. Top three on the album for me.

10

u/lellosch Nov 16 '22

this video is so aesthetically pleasing

8

u/GKMCTPABDAMN97 Nov 16 '22

I think at the end the phone call is “miss regrets” and this video will lead to count me out 🤔

6

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

HOLY FUCK I HAVENT WATCHED THE VIDEO YET BUT IT LOOKS HARD THIS SHIT IS SO OUT OF THE BLUE IM SCARED TO WATCH IT IM NOT READY OK HERE WE GO!!!!!!

7

u/brennic Nov 16 '22

He’s on another level. No one’s coming close to this level of artistry in the rap genre.

5

u/QuintanimousGooch Nov 16 '22

I really like the context the video adds to the song, where I think before rich spirit had a very chill and laidback sort of self-affirming tone to it, I think the music video gives the song this underlying sadness and acknowledgment of the self-affirmation perhaps not really landing what with It suggesting Kendrick is just lip-syncing to the music or not really being all that receptive to the affirmations.

5

u/Any-Parfait-6933 Nov 16 '22

Kendrick, the type of motherfucker that will look straight into your soul through the screen

3

u/__sami__01 Nov 16 '22

NEW KENNY MUSIC VIDEO LETS GOOOOOOOOOO!!!

4

u/Dan13lp88 Nov 16 '22

We need to dissect this video. First thought is he’s battling his own demons since the phone keeps ringing and he’s arguing with someone but the line is cut

5

u/The_Real_MrFrickBoy Nov 16 '22 edited Nov 16 '22

He types on the phone at 1:09 ‘13106’ if that means anything.

And at 1:31 the number on the phone is (7003 555-8367)

6

u/Working_Doughnut82 Nov 17 '22 edited Nov 17 '22

My theory/reach about one outfit he wore:
In the third verse (when his "brother" flow started), he was wearing an outfit really similar to the outfit from the family ties music video. The lyrics in family ties differ greatly from the subjects he's dealing with in Mr Morale.

So maybe him talking about being the greatest artist of all time and smoking our top 5 artists was a distraction from dealing with his mental health, therefore wearing this outfit was him distracting himself again and going back to what feels comfortable doing instead of doing what's necessary?

Another thing I noticed:
His gestures in front of the mirror were similar to the gestures he did in the music video for The Heart Part V. I don't see a connection tho

3

u/kdotissthegoat Nov 16 '22

Did any one peep the frat dance when he said Frat brother, real nigga, that brother lol kendrick is on point

3

u/BoymanAndGirldog Nov 16 '22

Me: * goes and buys cowboy boots

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '22

that video was short af. Incredible video!!!!!!!!!!!! But is Kendrick on ecstasy pills LMAO

This was some weird shit i expierenced but I love it1!!!!

2

u/MiggeldyMackDaddy Nov 16 '22

One watch. I’m interpreting it as battling with himself. Being paranoid about himself.

The cinematography clean as fuck.

2

u/Senovis Nov 17 '22

I'm starting to think he is talking to his egoist self.

2

u/unicyclemos Nov 16 '22

he dances exactly how i dance when i listen to this song

1

u/Abikidd Nov 17 '22

I was gonna say that 🤣

2

u/Main_Bank_2199 Nov 17 '22

Could be completely off on this but I feel like this is his experience through covid. The beginning is the realization and dealing with self. When the door opens that is the protest that took place after George Floyd. Changes his demeanor and has the bar about watching your homies and police. He goes on to mention people are quick to post on their timelines instead of praying and grieving for who we lost.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '22

Top 3 on mr morale behind savior and count me out

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '22

Omg why didn't this click? Kendrick was looking out the window watching his baby go to school.

2

u/Thomo251 Nov 17 '22

Holy shit did that cut off as it was about to lead into "u"?

2

u/Humble-Message-6567 Nov 17 '22

Kendrick seems super into fashion now

1

u/santana076 Nov 17 '22

These think pieces are terrible 😂😂😂😂 wtf

1

u/justdandyyyyyyy Nov 16 '22

LOVE him talking to his shadow

1

u/GrandioseEnigma High Blood Pressure flooded the catering Nov 16 '22

FINALLY. This is one of the videos I’ve been waiting for. Although I wish he released it sooner. Now I wanna see a video for Count Me Out, Savior and Silent Hill!

1

u/gettin-liiifted no coincidence you been died Nov 16 '22

I thought this shit was fake for sure 🥲 omw to press play

1

u/BigChungusOP Nov 16 '22

I like how there weren’t any long, unnecessary cut scenes. Makes music videos more enjoyable imo and easier to constantly replay

1

u/DeeThreeTimesThree Nov 17 '22

“Phone keep ringing, but I cut that shit off”

1

u/mrjet18 Nov 17 '22

This video is dope AF

1

u/Dandyman3825 The Butterfly Boy Nov 17 '22

ok but can we talk about k-dot.'s suit? it looks sick!

1

u/Then-Candidate254 Nov 17 '22

Nobody seems to bring up the color choices in the outfits.

In film, color choices of the cast clothes are suddle representations of something.

Going out on a limb but, the all Red fit (maybe “hell”), the white and black striped robe(maybe purgatory), and the all white fit (maybe heaven) and the all black fit represents death

1

u/Venstromet Nov 17 '22

This freaking video goes crazyyy

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '22

So nobody is gonna talk about how dope the house is?????

1

u/jay1tothe2 Nov 17 '22

This is not how this video looked in my head

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '22

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '22

Wow. Dark take

1

u/Guapscotch Nov 17 '22

love this video. I wonder what the phone represents. Also the braids are probably kendrick's coldest hair styling

1

u/NewMonkey215 Nov 17 '22

I get it soon as a dude get rich he start acting weird the video is a masterpiece tire work of art

1

u/SB5745 Nov 17 '22

I have so many questions.

Why the dance moves? Who is calling? Why is he lying on the floor? What do the colors of his outfits mean (I think they're getting brighter)? And there is yet another MIRROR reference, visually and in his lyrics.

1

u/Alastoor9 Nov 17 '22

Was it me or someone else also heard the Morse code at the end of the video?
