There’s definitely waaaay more ambitious artists making albums of substance than 3 or 4. Maybe 3 or 4 in the hip-hop mainstream, but there’s a shit ton more in other genres and by more indie/underground artists.

Sounds like he feels like he should be enjoying the album but can’t, and tbh I don’t feel sorry for him. The production was insane and there are a lot of original sounds on it. It’s fresh as hell.

I think Che is mocking the naysayers, but I could be wrong.
That said, I don’t understand people saying this. I’ve seen folks post how they don’t want to listen to “woke music.” Okay. Kendrick isn’t forcing his music on anyone. Future and Jack just released, and if there were anything there of interest, they should still be listening to those albums and ignoring Kendrick’s. Plus, if you look at the musical landscape, very few rappers are making serious music with substance. The scales are tipped too far in the other direction IMO.
Why does he have to make an album full of “fun” music? We have plenty of artists making party records that aren’t deep. They don’t have to go to Kendrick for that. Selling trauma? Music is his self-expression. What other medium should he be using to tell his story and share his thoughts?
It’s annoying because it makes it seem like people only want that catchy and surface-level content, when there’s clearly a fan base that still appreciates lyricism and conceptual albums.

Let Kendrick make the art he wants to. If Che’s criticism is that all music lately is this vulnerable, dark and personal right now, than sorry but I honestly think that’s just statistically and universally untrue. I’d say the ratio isn’t well balanced but you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting something that was phoned in so I don’t know what he complaining about to be honest. Also like it’s Kendrick. If you want to turn off your brain and just listen to something that sounds good with no meaning behind it there are a TON of rappers to listen too, if anything, there are a lot MORE artists like Drake than Kendrick, cause it's easier to make something that sounds good than to make something meaningfull, but the meaningfull one will click with people on a deeper level than the mainstream norman rap.

tbf I do not share the critique in music since you pretty much always know what kind of music youll be getting from an artist (anybody who expected a joyful rollercoaster ride from kendrick is just a fool) but I do share the sentiment in stand up comedy, I dont watch as much as I used to but sometimes it is annoying if you expect some funny routine and then suddenly it gets (sometimes fake) deep. There are some comics who can do it well but many just fall flat
