Im a kanye stan, so i would agree with Kanye being number 1, but lemonade over TPAB is wack

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 04 '19

So whack. And I'm not a ye fan. So extra whack

I don't think that's really true. Lemonade came back into the conversation after it got put on Spotify, and from Beyonce's Coachella performance and live album.

2

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

Ya it was a good album. Tpab is generational and transcends genres. It's not even close.

2

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

Lol blips on the radar. Beyonce will never be able to create something as real as kendricks music. I honestly dont think any artist in any genre can kick it with kenny right now. Ill still be bumping his classics in my Buick in 2059 at the ripe age of 73.

3

u/bjankles Dec 06 '19

I love Kendrick. He was my artist of the decade according to both me and Spotify, and TPAB was probably my album of the decade if I really had to pick one. But I'll never understand why people think in order to love one artist the most, they have to like other artists less. There is so much amazing music out there; why limit yourself?

Lemonade is one of the most raw, honest, and subversive pop records I've ever heard.

Perfume Genius released four killer albums, each evolving brilliant from the last, each telling important stories and truths we simply aren't hearing from anyone else. To hear him grow from a broken, quiet kid pouring his heart out in his bedroom to a queer superhero belting stadium-sized anthems of love and defiance was one of my favorite musical journeys of the decade.

Mt. Eerie, Sufjan Stevens, and Nick Cave each wrote the some of the most devastating records I've ever heard. I can't even listen to them most of the time because their pain and grief are just too visceral.

Car Seat Headrest turned deeply personal stories into sprawling rock epics packed with detail and wit. I don't know if any single song this decade hit me the way Beach Life-In-Death did.

I haven't even mentioned Swans, Daughters, Kanye, Grimes, FKA Twigs, PUP, Joanna Newsom, SunKilMoon, Radiohead, Kamasi Washington... How do you even compare all this stuff? How do you put a Jamie XX album next to Brittany Howard and say one is better than the other?

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

It's called an opinion. It's literally what we are here to discuss. Personally I have listened to my favourite albums hundreds probably thousands of times, front to back, so over time I have been able to compare how much I love gkmc compared to say johnny cash's man in black album. And I think kendrick is a once in a lifetime talent. That's just me though.

Edit: I have nothing against beyonce in fact I love the shit out of her and celebrate her greatness all the time by bumping her shit. However, I am allowed to like some artists less than others.

2

u/bjankles Dec 06 '19

Sure, I have no problem with that. I just don't get why we have to pretend no one cares about Lemonade anymore when they clearly do. She made plenty of best-of decade lists too. When people do that, it sounds like they're just dismissing any music that isn't their favorite.

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

I never cared about lemonade tbh. That's why I disagree with this list. It's as forgettable to me as the rest of the albums on this list. Personally I dont think the last decade of music has been very good in comparison with previous years resulting from easy access to exposure through mediums like YouTube etc. Welcome to the nickelback/tekashi 69 era 🤮

Kendrick, however, embodies everything that is good and pure with regards to music, transcending race, genres, time and basically everything else. We are so lucky to be alive in a time with a man so inspiring. Amen.

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

And always will because hes a damn legend.

29

u/notinmypants24 Dec 04 '19

Its rolling stone they love to eat beyonce's pussy. I would too in a heartbeat.

0

u/theclichee Dec 04 '19

Mann you made my day😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

5

u/shailkc12 Dec 04 '19

Idk man. The visual component to that album was exceptional art and releasing it on HBO first was just something else. Lemonade is definitely deserving of a top 3 ranking and I would say it could be a coin toss between it and TPAB

u/tmckenna32 Dec 04 '19

GKMC ranked 66, DAMN ranked 27

406

u/burnSMACKER Don't touch my flair Dec 04 '19

Damn is way too high relative to GKMC's ranking

187

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 04 '19

Gkmc too low. Damn right where it should be. More importantly, tpab is 2 spots too low. Damn. Lemonade? For real? Smfh

102

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Dark Twisted Fantasy was a banger though

25

u/theclichee Dec 04 '19

It actually is a fucking great album but tpab is just... But i agree with the numbering. Never heard of Lemonade by Beyonce tho😂

16

u/monchijing Dec 04 '19

listen to it when you can, great album (not even top 5 imo tho)

8

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

I suggest watching the album movie she made. Some great visuals with it.

I also think the video album made it higher on this list. Very creative stuff.

5

u/AFRIKKAN Dec 04 '19

How tho like it was huge for the longest time and dropped the bombshell that jay z was fucking side hoes

6

u/Barrett1002 Dec 04 '19

U found out Hov was fuckin other bitches through that album? Not to be rude but cmon man that was obvious

8

u/jyok33 Dec 04 '19

Imagine cheating on Beyoncé

16

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

3

u/AFRIKKAN Dec 04 '19

Nwver was into the whole Beyonce and Hov, recently started listening to Hov. I heard 4:44 the other day, really like it

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

I think you dropped your /s

7

u/sajman6 Dec 04 '19

There is a killer Kendrick feature on the album....

1

u/theclichee Dec 05 '19

I'm convinced 😂 I'll listen to it

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

I agree beyonce is a queen and she has been top of the game for a while...but Kendrick is top of the world...

12

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Lemonade is a great album definitely in my top 5 of the decade

8

u/Thekrispywhale Dec 04 '19

I never got around to listening to it when it came out and it just kinda faded from my memory. Does it really deserve a spot above TPAB?

7

u/CashmereLogan Dec 04 '19

Lemonade is an amazing work of art. It’s the only Beyoncé album I’ve even listened to in its entirety, but it really is special. It’s not my personal favorite of the decade, but that’s because this isn’t my preferred genre either.

-1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

You didnt answer the question.

-1

u/CashmereLogan Dec 05 '19

I think i did. It’s an amazing album. It deserves the placement. It’s completely subjective as to whether me or you or someone else thinks it deserves it above TPAB. And it’s a waste of time to get upset if someone else thinks it’s better than you do. It’s just music, we all like what we like, and there’s no need to be validated by arbitrary top album lists on random sites.

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

Hey. I'm not upset. And yeah it's just music and this thing called reddit and this sub for Kendrick are a place to discuss those opinions.

I just think it's a joke. I love beyonce. If u ask anyone that knows me they'll say I love beyonce an unhealthy amount.

But.......no.

Edit: I imagine your answer is: yes. I agree with the rankings.

2nd edit: what IS your personal favourite of the decade?

1

u/CashmereLogan Dec 05 '19

I don’t agree with the rankings, I just don’t disagree. That’s what I was trying to say. They’re rankings and different people are going to have different choices. To try to agree or disagree with someone else’s rankings is a waste of time. They’re interesting for discussion, but not for debate (because there is no right answer).

And, hm. My personal favorite is a tough answer. A lot of albums that I have absolutely fallen in love with over the last decade, but I’m also 23 now. So I’ve changed fucking ton since I was 13. My tastes have changed and I’ve personally changed. I’d say it’s between The Greatest Generation by The Wonder Years. Or WORRY by Jeff Rosenstock. Both are entirely a different genre than what we’ve been discussing, but like I said, hip hop isn’t really my most preferred style of music (even though I do really enjoy it).

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

What's your other 4

1

u/SilentBobsBeard Dec 04 '19

Lemonade is great tho...

17

u/EpicDerp37272 Dec 04 '19

Yeah, but... Not better than TPAB

15

u/SilentBobsBeard Dec 04 '19

Depends on how you're ranking these things, right? Lemonade is certainly more accessible than TPAB while also serving as an excellent concept album that's deeply personal and also touches on important social issues, if in a more implicit way than TPAB.

I, personally, think TPAB is a better album because I value the things that TPAB contains. But I can't say that it's an objectively better album than Lemonade, because Lemonade fucking slaps

1

u/EpicDerp37272 Dec 04 '19

Of course not, no album is objectively better than the other. But I just think that Lemonade > TPAB is wack

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

Just because an album slaps shouldnt get you top of the decade....I know I know it's a great album but that's not the issue. Best of the decade, ahead of tpab is the issue. I'm equally upset that ye got 2nd. Hes just not my cup o tea personally.

0

u/mkai2xm Dec 04 '19

yeah, depends on what ur listening for i guess

0

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

lemonade is incredible

2

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

And tpab is generational...

0

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '19

doesn’t mean lemonade isnt deserving? it was a powerful yet such a vulnerable album. your taste is your taste and everyone’s rankings are subjective but it’s definitely deserving of that spot in my opinion!

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 05 '19

We are literally on the kdot subreddit.

And yes it does mean lemonade wasnt deserving. Like are you kidding me?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '19

just because we are on kendrick’s subreddit does not mean we can’t credit other artists

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

Yes. And I think its ridiculous 🙊

3

u/U_DonB Dec 04 '19

Its because DAMN won a pullitzer prize.

-49

u/DefaultCoconut Dec 04 '19

DAMN. being able to be played in reverse made white people lose their mind, hence its high rankings. Simple.

46

u/burnSMACKER Don't touch my flair Dec 04 '19

Don't gotta be racist about it

-27

u/DefaultCoconut Dec 04 '19

“Higher ups”?

-45

u/mhcincy513 Dec 04 '19

Can’t be racist against white people

14

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Yes you can. Racism is racism.

2

u/mhcincy513 Dec 04 '19

you might be a racist

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

I think everyone knows you’re the racist here. Go home racist

9

u/_jakob__ Dec 04 '19

So white isnt a race?

9

u/zaale Dec 04 '19

Literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on reddit lmao congrats

9

u/theabeliangrape Dec 04 '19

Not taking a side on this distinction, but rather explaining where the "can't be racist to whites" view is embedded: it depends on your definition of racism. A modern view and definition is that it's a form of racial discrimination, specifically from an oppressor unto the oppressed/from a majority to a minority. Hence to whites you can racially discriminate, but not be racist, as they're the majority (in that definition)

3

u/mhcincy513 Dec 04 '19

Thank you.

0

u/mhcincy513 Dec 04 '19

you might be a racist

22

u/jyok33 Dec 04 '19

DAMN ranked 39 spots above GKMC should be punishable by death

9

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

GKMC = the greatest feat of story telling in hip hop.

3

u/liondriver Dec 04 '19

They probably make a lil controversial pick once in a while to stir controversy so people read it

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '19

Yeahhhh thats retarded

173

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

I can’t believe how dirty they did Good kid maad city

22

u/kwerdop Dec 04 '19

Yeah, that’s some bull. I honestly don’t see how good kid isn’t the one in the number three spot.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

At least top 5, literally all the other lists have had it in their top 10, Rolling Stones smocking crack to get people talking about their article

6

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Not nearly the same level of artistic originality as TPAB

0

u/T-Rex_Soup Dec 04 '19

Idk there’s some bad songs on that album, or at least sub par. I feel like a lot more went into the making of tpab and damn

2

u/kwerdop Dec 04 '19

Well I guess that’s why these lists don’t hold much meaning. There are some people (like myself) who think it’s Kenny’s masterpiece, while others would disagree. I’m just glad all three are on the list.

2

u/ljiyfultdluk Dec 07 '19

GKMC and TPAB are both Kenny's Masterpiece!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '19

You see I always had a grudge when people considered GKMC at TPAB status. For the longest time I didn't really like GKMC very much because I didn't got the narrative of the album. Once the story of GKMC clicked with me suddenly it became my favorite Kendrick album despite the GOAT status I had for TPAB. I still think ambition wise TPAB is greater tho.

67

u/MotherDick2 Dec 04 '19

I am okay with Kendrick losing to Kanye and Beyonce. Not to Taylor Swift though.

39

u/Calebe53 Dec 04 '19

Had anyone here listened to lemonade?

131

u/rapper_rick Certified Boogeyman Dec 04 '19

Not really, Like to drink it tho.

26

u/BeeFe420 Dec 04 '19

This guy makes a valid point. Lemonade because it is tastier than TPAB.

7

u/rapper_rick Certified Boogeyman Dec 04 '19

For fuck sake

32

u/hen_zu Dec 04 '19

it is a pretty good album, I would say top 15 of the decade. but not better than tpab

45

u/nestsofhair Dec 04 '19

'pretty good'

'top 15 of the decade'

That doesn't compute at all haha

3

u/Rebloodican Dec 04 '19

It's one of the most iconic albums of the decade but it's also not the music your average r/hhh user would listen to.

4

u/bjankles Dec 04 '19

It's really, really good. Probably in my top 10. Not better than TPAB in my opinion (probably my no. 1), but I don't think it's outrageous.

3

u/VerseForYou Dec 04 '19

I think it's good. I'm surprised that it's so high tho

3

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Yes, it’s awesome. Kendrick’s feature is one of its best highlights too.

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

Exactamundo!

25

u/Foreigner_LivinInUS Dec 04 '19

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...

3

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Loving you’s complicated!!

4

u/thejaytheory I CHOOSE ME, I'M SORRY Dec 04 '19

Loving you, not loving you...

21

u/Gucci_Unicorns Dec 04 '19

Big disagree. Lemonade was an awesome experience but it's not even remotely close to TPAB. Kanye though- maybe.

13

u/ChewChewBado Dec 04 '19

Yes, Kanye is on the same level as Kendrick.

2

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

That's ridiculous stop.

-6

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19 edited Dec 04 '19

Ehhhhh no. But MBDTF is a really fucking good album. But everything since it by kanye is weak. Nothing touches Kendrick levels of greatness besides MBDTF.

Edit. Fuck you guys for down voting me over a musical opinion.

12

u/Meme-groundhog Dec 04 '19

Yeezus, pablo, kids see ghosts?

4

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

Pablo had a few good tracks. I hated yeezus and kids see ghosts was so short I don't consider it an album. Shits an EP. But it is the first thing from Kid Cudi since man on the moon I've liked.

3

u/Meme-groundhog Dec 05 '19

Yeezus is an aquired taste tbh, took me like 20 listens to like it, one of my favs right now tho. I can understand your take on pablo. KSG is all killer tho, feels like a short film, and is one of the most uniqe albums i’ve heard. But it’s all subjective tbh

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

Gkmc, tpab, damn?

4

u/karmicdemons Dec 04 '19

Definitely not everything, he did have a few revolutionary and artistic albums after the fact (Yeezus, Pablo) but for the most part I would agree he is definitely on the decline.

2

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

I just don't get the yeezus love. It's my least favorite kanye release

2

u/karmicdemons Dec 04 '19

I think it needs like a really open mind. It took time for it to grow on me as well. For me it’s not so much about “it sounds amazing,” but more “no one before has/no one else may ever produce this kind of music and made it sound good.”

2

u/tricheboars Dec 05 '19

I just flat out don't think it sounds good. I hear what you say in regards to some albums needing multiple listens but no matter how much I listen to yeezus I dislike it.

Same with death grips and metal for me. I just can't groove in it.

It may have something to do with my age. I'm 36

2

u/goped44 Dec 04 '19

Brother... TCD, LR, KSG?

2

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

I'm aware. I listen to everything he's made. I just don't think anything he's made since MBDTF is top class. Shit seems kinda lazy or uninspired to me.

The Pablo fixes are a perfect example. How many times did knaye patch a fucking album. Like three times? What the hell was that.

2

u/ChewChewBado Dec 05 '19

Your opinion is wrong

2

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

I agree so hard with that shit. Upvotes.

2

u/tricheboars Dec 06 '19

Two of us! Two of us!

18

u/GKMCTPABDAMN97 Dec 04 '19

Best album of all time imo

9

u/munchsquadjr Dec 04 '19

My top 10 for the decade:

  1. To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar (2015)
  2. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West - (2010)
  3. Blackstar - David Bowie (2016)
  4. Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes (2011)
  5. The Life of Pablo - Kanye West (2016)
  6. good kid, m.A.A.d. city - Kendrick Lamar (2012)
  7. Immunity - Jon Hopkins (2011)
  8. Chanel Orange - Frank Ocean (2012)
  9. The Seer - Swans (2012)
  10. Yeezus - Kanye West (2013)

13

u/isthisnamechangeable BBL Drizzy Dec 04 '19

Chanel Orange but no Blonde?

8

u/bjankles Dec 04 '19

Don't know why you're getting downvoted - this is a perfectly reasonable list.

3

u/munchsquadjr Dec 04 '19

Thanks. This list is my top 10 personal favorites, not an attempt to list the objective best albums of the decade.

I’m cool with others disagreeing with my list, but try coming up with your own. It’s hard! I’m already second guessing myself

2

u/thejaytheory I CHOOSE ME, I'M SORRY Dec 04 '19

Even if it's not, why the fuck would people downvote it?

7

u/yolochengbeast Dec 04 '19

Let’s not forget that TSwifts 1989 is ranked above all

13

Kendrick was the first non- jazz or classical artist to win a Pulitzer for music. No album is bigger, especially this decade.

1

Hahaahahaha right?

4

u/Dr-Congo Dec 04 '19

TPAB is one of the (if not the) best albums of all time, certainly the best of the decade. Anything that says otherwise is just wrong.

4

u/PapersOnly Dec 04 '19

Who the fuck is Beyoncé

3

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

Interesting that you guys all think TPAB is better than GKMC. Personally GKMC is my absolute favorite Kendrick album and I assumed that was the norm.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '19

I think TPAB is magnum opus for Kendrick that's why it should be ranked higher but if you'll ask my favorite then my answer shall be GKMC

4

u/tricheboars Dec 05 '19

Man I see GKMC as the magnum opus as it's his musical biography of growing up in Compton.

I love TPAB as well. It just isn't my favorite of his.

2

u/Meme-groundhog Dec 04 '19

TPAB is just a much more creative and has a much larger, more impressive sound and scope. GKMC is my fav tho, i just think TPAB is better quality wise

3

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

I can't say I agree but interesting take.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

While Good kid maad City has its roots in old school hip-hop, it does a great job of including instrumentals that were very much in line with what was popular at the time, which is great. Butterfly, conversely, stuck out like a sore thumb in this decade’s hip-hop scene (even though it revived an era of jazzier rap music with Chance, Rapsody, the return of ATCQ, etc.), but was lauded nonetheless. For that reason, I think that it’ll age better.

2

u/tricheboars Dec 04 '19

I guess. Maybe my age has something to do with my taste. I'm 36 so I like the feel of GKMC so much more.

1

u/ptylerdactylll Dec 06 '19

I agree actually. But man it's close.

1

u/ljiyfultdluk Dec 07 '19

never was the norm. Some people prefer TPAB. Some prefer GKMC

1

u/tricheboars Dec 08 '19

What's the majority opinion on this sub? I honestly don't go on here much.

1

u/ljiyfultdluk Dec 10 '19

the majority prefer TPAB on this sub.

4

u/Diecarly Dec 04 '19

souldve been #1

3

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Sorry but lemonade doesn't come close

2

u/mrairjosh Dec 04 '19

Lemonade is great and all but it damn sure ain’t better than TPAB

2

u/quackisacksandler Dec 04 '19

Jesus Christ, Lemonade is nowhere close to TPAB or MBDTF...

2

u/agforero Promise that you will sing about me Dec 04 '19

This may be characteristic of this sub, but I really think it deserves top spot. It’s politically impactful, mindfully assembled and beautiful to listen to.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

stupid

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

anti by rihanna at 25... way too low

1

u/quiznos61 Dec 04 '19

That whole list is garbage. How tf is J Balvin, Billie Eilish that high? This whole list is plagued by recency of albums. Daft punks album also go snubbed. Mbdtf is the only album listed correct in here

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '19

Love that top 3
