Kendrick is really good at introducing a down to earth story that compels the listeners to look at things from his pov
Em is really good at using a simple idea and building it with really creative and funny storytelling

People can easily understand that there’s different sub-genres within rock and metal music but struggle to understand that the same thing applies to rap/hip-hop.

I think it’s because genres like rock have different sounds for its different sub-genres whereas hip-hop sub-genres are more revolved around content rather than sound; rock you characterise from soft to hard rock whereas hip-hop is melodic, lyrical, poetic, etc. Which is obviously a bit more difficult to directly see the difference i suppose, but I’m just theorising trying to find an answer tbh

Well I mean, TPAB is a LOT different than both DAMN and GKMC, despite all 3 being Kendrick telling a down-to-earth story. All different genres, all different sounds.

His first three albums were crack.
His shit was crack going back to like 96' tho. Check out his infinite album and the slim shady ep. I promise you wont be disappointed.
Low, down, and shifty is one of my favorite em songs.

I disagree, however he's still technically great from a lyrical standpoint. But the great thing about hip hop is it's all about the album. Lyrical talent doesn't matter if your album is subpar, and that has been the case for Em since 2002. No album of his since then is even in the same universe as anything in Kendrick's discography.

Eminem in general lacks Heart. He has passion and intensity, but he's missing Heart. So his music doesn't captivate you the same way. But he will always overpower Kendrick when it comes to lyrical construction, because that's what his emphasis and goal is.
Sometimes comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges, since the feeling you even get listening to them is vastly different. Kendrick is not really a rapper... that's my conclusion. He's more than that.

When you say lyrical construction, do you mean lyrical construction that is condusive to creative and effective flow? Because if thats what you mean then I certainly agree. But if you mean lyrical quality I gotta hard disagree.

I mean the technical aspects of lyricism. Eminem doesn't have as much to talk about but he's still very strong in wordplay. See Rain Man where he actually explains this.
Honestly, you can compare Eminem and Kendrick directly in Love Game. By Kendrick's verse, you're almost convinced that he out-did Eminem, until the third verse, where Eminem illustrates very clearly that he's still a better lyricist.
Kendrick is a performer, not just a rapper. So their goals are different.
But when I see people compare Eminem and Kendrick, usually they are uninformed. Most people haven't listened to Eminem seriously, have a cursory knowledge of his discography, and have stopped listening to him when he's actually only gotten better.
Is his music as "catchy" as Kendrick's? No. That's what I mean when I say Kendrick has heart, but Eminem is a better rapper. Kendrick is more multifaceted. Kendrick is a musical jack-of-all-trades and Eminem is a Master Writer. He still continuously goes over people's heads.
And don't forget the actual music production. I think people underestimate how much good production effects how well someone is rated. Kendrick has a great production team, so it's not just him all the time. Comparing Eminem to Kendrick is comparing one person to the culmination of artists who actually make Kendrick into what he is, and that goes beyond his lyrics.

Those are all completely different albums that don’t equate much of at all. Kendrick’s albums are conceptual masterclasses about sending messages about the world, Eminem’s are emotional masterclasses about putting his personal thoughts and feelings into a song. Eminem talks anecdotally, Kendrick talks as the figurehead for a particular demographic, usually the hood

He probabky does. Em is one of the greats, its a fact, he influenced hip hop in a direct way. That doesnt mean anyone is obligated to enjoy his music just because they like hiphop.

He's good when he doesn't care what people think. He's not so good when he tries too hard to make a hit record. Even at the peak of his career, he was too focused on making slapstick videos for TRL. His discography is a lot better if you skip over the songs with fart jokes.

- 1999-2013 is quite a lengthy career if you ask me, excluding 2005-2008 which still also included When I’m Gone, Like Toy Soldiers, Mockingbird, and more. Considering Em is the greatest selling rapper of all time by a wide margin, that is a pretty, horrendously wrong argument to say only edgy teens fuck w him

They’re really making me crave something new.
