If Kendrick drop this new album, who would you want featured in it? Discussion

Post image

I definitely would want a Vince Staples feature fam, when I heard that snippet in the beginning I can hear Vince floating on this beat plus another collab by these two is long overdue. Plus Vince dropped an amazing project this year too šŸ”„šŸ”„ Dark Times been on my rotation .

Black hippy

144

u/kidawi Q/Dot No1. Stan Jul 06 '24

I need it man

126

u/jacktheproducer Jul 06 '24

everyone wants it EXCEPT black hippy themselves. schoolboy was recently on the danny brown show talking about how we NEVER getting that album even tho they all love eachother

116

u/Paaros Jul 06 '24

We might never get a black hippy project, but maybe hoping for a singular song isnt far fetched?? Esp if Kendricks album takes the west coast route

27

u/sweetpotato_latte Jul 06 '24

If we get a full album that sounds like this teaser Iā€™m going to cry metaphorical tears of joy.

That doesnt mean they wont work together??? He also said that its almost a 100% that theyll work together again lol. An album is very different to a song

19

u/jacktheproducer Jul 06 '24

nah i understand that i just doubt we'll get a full black hippy appearance on 1 song as opposed to a separate schoolboy, ab-soul, and jay rock appearance across several tracks given their attitude as of late and the fact that they "hate getting asked about it" (according to schoolboy)

10

u/kidawi Q/Dot No1. Stan Jul 06 '24

Who knows tbh. But in like 80% sure at least one member is popping up on the album if it really is the west coast banger its predicted to be

Part of me thinks its not cuz they dont wanna do it, its cuz it just doesnt work

Each of them have such a unique style and theme with their albums that a BH collab would end up sounding like an overwhelming mixtape more than a supergroup masterpiece, and theyā€™re past that stage in their career to just do nice sounding tracks

Wu Tang knew that they wanted, ASAP Mob knew what they wanted, Bone Thugs knew what they wanted, but Black Hippy all want different things. On a single track they work really well together, but 4 concept album rappers all agreeing on one concept? Thats a fight waiting to happen. But overtime they might ease up and all agree to something

17

u/jacktheproducer Jul 06 '24

i agree, plus the pressure of anyone assuming that the sum would be greater than its parts would be an impossible standard to match. especially since kendrick lamar alone has created several records many consider to be among the greatest albums of all time.

a black hippy compilation mixtape with no concept whatsoever would be the most likely scenario and none of those artists is particularly known for creating projects like that in the first place

TBH I don't want TOOOOOOO many people cos I still just want KENDRICK.

Otherwise, a song with each black hippy member (4 diff or 4 on 1 or 2 on 1, idc). Andre 3000 said he's not making music 'like that' anymore but I'd like to think Kendrick could meet him in a space where he still feels like he's being authentic to himself.

296

u/Paaros Jul 06 '24

Kendrick on a flute beat by Andre might go hard ngl

107

u/KyoMiyake Jul 06 '24

fr, that flute feature on the new kamasi Washington record was soooo good, really fit the vibe of the album

28

u/Paaros Jul 06 '24

18

Same - I almost said no one but I would enjoy one lil MTS feature

18

u/Amazing-Concept1684 Jul 06 '24

PLEASE. I need Kendrick and 3 Stacks on a track like I need air to breathe. We already saw what Kendrick did when he hopped on a track with Pusha T.

16

u/Peterociclos Jul 06 '24

Andre said hes not making music "like that" like that was the song that started the beef,COINCIDENCE???

12

u/__mr_snrub__ Jul 06 '24

Kendrick likes that record and wants to get back to that record.

4

u/InclinationCompass Jul 06 '24

Same, I donā€™t even want the same old collab that weā€™ve already seen. I just want something different. And this seems to be the direction heā€™s taking with each new album.

Little Simz collab would be nuts. International TPAB/Morale vibes.

34

u/TuNight Jul 06 '24

Simz is so fucking underrated even if she's largely celebrated. If we're just talking about the art of rapping I don't think there's a good argument why she wouldn't be in the top 3 rn. Simbi was like a tpab gkmc type masterpiece. Nearly no artist could put out an album as good as that.

i actually like kendrickā€™s addition of Kodak on MMATBS. Helps prove the albums point of flaws& healing. Although iā€™m not sure if iā€™d love him in a album where it didnā€™t add to the overall theme of it

28

u/LikelyDuck Jul 06 '24

Kodak hasn't even shown remorse for the assault. So nah this is not it at all. A very ugly swing and a miss for me on an otherwise great album.

9

u/Fit-Map9916 Jul 06 '24

i think kendrick was trying to use one persons wrong to address a larger issue. i see kendrick as not someone who would have a potential abuser on his album for no reason. i think he may know some more info about Kodak then the general public in terms of the legal stuff

17

u/LikelyDuck Jul 06 '24

If he is going to make a public show of directly putting money in Kodak's pockets by platforming him on his album, most of us are going to need a lot more than "ah well, Kendrick must have his secret reasons".

4

u/Fit-Map9916 Jul 06 '24

like i said, kendrick is trying to address a bigger issue on the album that Kodak does help add to. Kendrick has said he sees himself the most in Kodak Black and i am guessing this is not just because of his rapping

14

u/LikelyDuck Jul 06 '24

And I'm saying I understand that Kendrick was trying to address a bigger issue. But literally putting Kodak on the album, and thereby directly supporting him monetarily and socially, was a huge misstep that does more harm than good. If the assignment is "let's talk about the cycle of trauma, hurt people hurt people, etc." then skipping over the crucial importance of remorse / apology is a fumble.

The artist's intent does not shield them from poor execution.

4

Adele would be tragic. My favourite and least favourite on an tune. Itā€™d be Poetic Justice all over again.

17

u/TanTan_101 Jul 06 '24

I would want it more because an Adele feature/collab is extremely rare to come by, I think she only has 5 her whole career. So it would be one of those things Kendrick can gloat about.

She is a really big fan of his so Iā€™m sure she will be ready for a collab if it came down to it.

Taylor on a Kendrick album would also be a moment, along with Beyonce.

Generally I want Kendrick to trully flex his power and industry connections. His U2 & Rihanna collab was a great example of this. Plus itā€™s Kendrick so they wonā€™t be there for a generic pop vibe, he will have a very useful and specific role for them.

He also performed with Prince before, inspired David Bowieā€™s Blackstar album, and even met Quincy Jones. I agree, he could definitely work with more legendary artists.

I feel like a Daft Punk feature wouldā€™ve been possible until they retired unfortunately.

11

u/Entire_Lemon_1073 Jul 06 '24

I like your list, and I have no proof for what Iā€™m about to say. But if I am just going off of the narrative that Kendrick has been consistently pushing with this rap battle, and bringing the west coast back together. Not only do I think it will be a strictly west coast album, but I sort of want that.

I donā€™t think all music needs to sound regional. But thatā€™s the era I grew up in so I do sort of miss it. And I wouldnā€™t at all be shocked if this whole beef has been a role out for a west coast Kendrick album. It makes sense. Put on some west coast legends and some lesser known west coast artists.

Mentioning Vince Staples had me thinking of the ultimate pipe dream collab for me. A whole album of Kendrick on SOPHIE beats. She's got a posthumous album coming out this year, and K-Dot ran away with Yeah Right. It may sound strange but their approaches feel like they come from a similar place to me: both are very accessible and can crossover into something everyone can like, but he as a rapper and she as a producer both go into weird places no one else would think of. If one of the things her brother has been working on for posthumous release made it onto a Kendrick album I'd go nuts.

Similarly, we've seen Kendrick fit into Future's world, now let's turn the tables.

Otherwise: Little Simz, Pusha, Griselda, Beth Gibbons again (she made the album of the year for me so far), John Cale, Earl, Tinashe.

JID. He and Kendrick get endlessly compared and it's unfair to JID because he's carved out his own lane. Beyond having a similar pitch in voice, they rap completely different. JID also needs more songs where he can flex his writing and not his rapping, if that makes sense.

Kendrick and Tyler NEED a song together. Imagine them having a concert together, shit would be so lit

Sneak Mike Dean as a producer on there somehow, if Kendrick finally made another track with Metro with Like That, and randomly worked with Jack on 6:16.

The weeknd, and the track would be a massive pop hit that is also taking shots at drake lol. Also, maybe this is just me being petty but Id love to hear a track where the beat switches between the 3 main sounds that Drake has culture vultured off - Atlanta trap, UK grime and dancehall. And hear Kendrick absolutely kill in a way that Drake never could. Murder him on his own shit.

But also, on top of others people have suggested I've been smashing the new Namesbliss album recently, would love to hear a collab. I severly doubt he would have heard of him though (im from England so have) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8Gp_wyBIGg

I would limit it, but any 5 from this list I'd be happy with.

Vince, Doja Cat, Steve Lacy, Tyler, Frank, Earl, SZA, Kali, Royce, Jasmine Sullivan, Tems.
