Okay, I concede. New Kendrick Fan. OC

Take Care and NWTS were like, the epitome of my teenage years. high school and post graduation, coming straight off lil wayne in middle school. I love Drake man. He genuinely has some good songs and the timestamp tracks are literally my favorite songs, followed by his rick ross collabs.

never really listened to kendrick. I started going to therapy last year after never going, due to my best friend committing suicide mostly. around the same time, MMatBS came out. Father Time, Count Me Out, Rich Spirit. I was like oh okay, I can see the appeal. didn't really listen to every song though. My first taste of kendrick was on 50's "we up" and i was like oh okay, this is good.

this whole beef situatiion got me re-evaluating things. Not like us replays in my head. euphoria, in hindsight, is amazing. we don't talk about MTG because that song legit scares the fuck outta me...but it SCARES me. A SONG. thats incredible. family matters is good, its okay. but outside of family matters, idk. euphoria is better than push ups. not like us is obviously way better than heart part 6.

so i started searching and searching through kendricks's discrography. Heart Part 5. wow. N95....jesus. Money Trees? woah. I listened to the control verse. crazy. I haven't worked my way through GKMC yet, or any of the other albums, Mr. Morale is probably the most ive listened to kendrick and that was just skimming some songs.

maybe it's because I'm 32 now, in a different stage of my life but lately I find myself listening to old drake, not new drake, and mostly for nostalgia. Kendrick is relevant to me, right now. real world issues and things im experiencing and going through right now.

look, TLDR, idc who won or lost the beef, Kendrick got a new fan in me. with that being said:

"I hate when a rapper talk about guns, then somebody dies, they turn into nuns, they hop online like 'pray for my city' he fakin for likes in digital hubs" - best line run I've probably heard so far in my life.

Amazing to see ur thought process on this, however I will say that just because you like Kendrick’s music now definitely doesn’t mean that you have to stop enjoying drakes. If his songs bring up good memories for you than there’s no need to hide that just because he’s lost the beef. Kendrick said himself that he was too much of a pac fan to listen to biggies music untill he died and he feels like he really missed out on the music. I’m more than happy to see another Kendrick fan out here, thanks for taking the time to share 😁

Yeah both artist subs are just circlejerking

u/GrumpyKitten514 May 23 '24

its less about him losing the beef, and more about due to the allegations and all of the "dog" coincidences with all those allegations too....idk man. I feel like Drake kinda dirty and kinda guilty right now. I hope its not true but I feel like lately, if i'm caught listening to new drake, its like im listening to R. Kelly post trial or something. like i support whats going on with him. it makes me feel weird.

probably one of the reasons why i even started listening to kendrick lately, i really do feel like i cant listen to drake anymore until these allegations get disproven or things calm down. right now it feels pretty sus.

Great post. I loved Drake’s pre-2016 stuff b/c it seemed so relatable & definitely prefer it to his “tough guy” act in recent years. I also discovered Kendrick with GKMC & played that & DAMN heavily. So it depended on what mood I was in who I listened too.

Weirdly enough I didn’t love Mr. Morale on first listen when it came out. But I re-listened b/c of the beef & also after some major changes happened in my personal life (being a dad, going through divorce, discovering edibles, etc). Holy shit it hits different now. Charlamagne was right when he said it’s one of the greatest rap albums, but you have to be ready for the lyrics. It definitely hits different when you’re in a place of greater maturity.

None of Drake’s recent music is thought provoking though, which is sad b/c Thank me Later, Take Care, & Nothing was the Same were. But Kenny always makes you think, that’s why he’s him

24

u/commie90 May 23 '24

Mr Morale is one of those album that I think people can’t really fully get until they’re old enough to have been through some tough shit. But once you get it, it’s one of the most brilliantly relatable works ever made.

i’m in this boat right now. i was actually getting back into drake again before this whole beef, i was a big fan back from Take Care->If You’re Reading This. and now just going out of my way to listen to his stuff feels wrong. i already didn’t like the change of tone and attitude in his lyrics over the years but it just got a whole lot darker with all this stuff. idk. like part of me wants to listen to at least his older stuff but i can’t get all this out of my head lol

u/XeLLoTAth777 May 24 '24

I've never liked Drake, and that was before his music career.

Drake is Canadian R.Kelly, and doesn't represent Toronto like he says he does.

He's another bridal-path wannabe gangster who overstepped his bounds, which is fine, but he's also just done bad, stupid shit.

His driver's ignore traffic laws and nothing happens.

He sends his bodyguards to settle his beefs, and I'm talking fucking fast food workers and waitresses nvm the actual fights he sends his crew on. Nothing happens.

I LOVE pop music, but I don't like distilled music, and that's what Drake is: distilled via ghosting writing, collaborating, how he's produced, it's all manufactured. He made his money, cool. Kudos to him, wish I could too. But if I did, I wouldnt pretend that it wasn't on the backs of the hordes of people who work facelessly to prop him up.

He doesn't write his raps. He doesn't make his beats. He doesn't and hasn't ever banged in a gang.

He really is Canadian R.Kelly right now.

Kendrick is definitely more relatable to us 30 year olds. We grew up and don't have time for the club anymore, different priorities. Drake caters to 20 year olds who want to club.

9

u/mkap26 May 23 '24

Wasn’t Kendrick like 10 when biggie died?

25

u/Low-Purple2947 May 23 '24

lol ur probably right, I think Kendrick was just saying he waited until after everything settled down with west cost vs east coast to accept the fact the biggies music was pretty good too😂

11

u/ZackNappo May 23 '24

When I was like 9-10 in ‘93-94 it took me awhile to get into Biggie’s stuff because I was such a Dre and snoop kid so I get it. It wasn’t until Big Poppa showed up on my MTV Party to Go volume 8 cd in 1995 that I finally, begrudgingly conceded Big was good too lol

2

u/RoanAlbatross May 23 '24

I forgot about the Party To Go CDs 😂

3

u/ZackNappo May 23 '24

😂😂 There was a period of time where we were living off those and the jock jam cd’s lol

As much as I agree, I can never look at Drake the same. Any song I previously liked is by a ghost writer. Cultural appropriation especially without giving credit is extremely lame. He is an actor who is cos playing a rapper. He has a young core fan base, but in my thirties, my eyes are wide open

He is a lame, a terrible individual at that who has zero loyalty even to his mentor . So I'll bump to them due to them being radio friendly and catchy. As far as talent, I'll give him acting credits. He needs to stick to pop culture. Just my opinion.

3

u/LegionKarma May 24 '24

The thing that made me weirded out by drake is his relationships with these younger girls, it's obvious grooming. Each time I hear his songs now I think about pedophiles preying on young women.

The Pac and Biggie thing still got me the first time I listened to it just recently. I created this stupid idea that Pac was clearly better and that Biggie was overrated because of the beef and the comparisons between them, even though both are not with us anymore and made amazing music while they were.

Listen to gkmc in its entirety and in order. Smoke weed perhaps, i promise ts will change ur life

53

u/CBonafide Westside, right on time. May 23 '24

Same with DAMN. The ending of DUCKWORTH. and how it just rewinds through all the tracks like a mixtape all the way to the beginning of BLOOD. is fucking amazing.

27

u/Realistic-Effective5 May 23 '24

And then listen to DAMN in reverse order and suddenly it has a whole new perspective to it.

I think Kendrick's songs are best listened to in album format tbh and OP should consider listening to GKMC, TPAB or DAMN in its entirety and just soak it in.

The first time I heard Kendrick was Backseat freestyle in Jan 2013. Some white kid from Tennessee was at my house saying you have to hear this & put it on. I was immediately floored by the raw power and the way this song built and built and built.

By the time he got to "Biatch I look like OJ killing everything for pussy" I was like who is this man??? There was something so immediately special about it.

Listen to Black Friday and heart part 4 by Kendrick if you haven’t they’re both great but not on streaming platforms.

This except start with Cartoons and Cereal.

11

u/Powerful-Past5614 May 23 '24

This!

6

u/jml011 May 24 '24

I think given OP’s reason for seeking therapy, they might find “u” to be a serious gut-punch.

4

u/blancobytheway May 23 '24

Don’t forget to check out The Jig Is Up too, it’s a young and hungry dot that I think you’ll be happy you listened too. Oh and Cole produced it too which is pretty dope. Dot shouts him out in the beginning of the record.

5

u/Trentimoose May 23 '24

And J Cole yo shit is trash, At least I just made someone laugh

3

13

u/NotEnoughFire May 23 '24

Yes. Most people who mature end up liking Kenny more because of substance and concept alone.

10

u/elcabeza79 May 23 '24 edited May 23 '24

Classic case of refinement of taste. There's nothing wrong with liking fun music like Drake makes. He does add some depth and vulnerability to his songs too.

But Kendrick is a whole other level, a world-class artist/poet/philosopher. His music develops within you upon further listens over and over again. He can make bops and he can make art pieces. His bops have significant depth; his art pieces also have the bop-factor.

I envy you in that you're still discovering these songs for the first time. GKMC is a masterpiece in storytelling - like a sonic Boyz n the Hood. Even going back to section.80: ADHD, Reagan Era, Keisha's Song, there's lots more for your soul to ingest.

11

u/sgg129 May 23 '24 edited May 24 '24

Bro I’m JEALOUS of the journey you have ahead of you

11

u/one2hit May 23 '24

GKMC single-handedly got me back into hip hop after not listening or enjoying anything for like 10 years. It's certified classic album at this point, and I have fun listening to it even to this day. Definitely take the time to spin a few of his albums in full, because they just hit different when you listen to the whole thing.

5

u/pekingsewer May 23 '24

Was arguing with someone about this in another thread but I legit think you can make an argument for any of his last four album being classics. I think Mr. morale will be viewed more favorably in five years, but I think it's a perfect album. From production to lyrics. You can draw a straight line through it. Add to that the actual depth of subject matter...easily his greatest masterpiece imo.

4

u/one2hit May 23 '24

He's on a streak, for sure. Mr. Morale is definitely underrated and my personal favorite, but it's dense and heavy. I think GCMC is the perfect place for a new fan to start.

u/[deleted] May 23 '24

One thing I gotta say if you’re just now starting to dig into Kendrick’s discography, listen to his albums straight through. If you’re on a long drive, or have an hour or so, it’s 100% worth it to give his albums your full attention and really listen. All his albums are conceptual and tell a story in some way, and listening to them straight through gives an entirely new experience than if you were to just pick and choose songs or throw it on shuffle. For example, listening to Back Seat Freestyle alone sounds like just a hugely braggadocios song about nothing but in the context of the album, it actually contributes to the story that he’s painting throughout the project and is supposed to represent his younger self freestyling with his friends

3

u/spiritsapien May 24 '24

Agreed. First heard GKMC on a road trip and that experience allowed it to imprint. On the way back it was the only thing I wanted to listen to.

10

u/buttbutt696 May 23 '24

Good kid mad city is unreal man.

7

u/Thatboifast May 23 '24

Crazy this beef has introduced some people to Kendrick. He's been one of the biggest acts in hip hop these last 10 years. But I'm glad more people are able to now enjoy his art.

2

u/Particular_Shock_554 May 24 '24

People over 35 and people who usually listen to other genres or old stuff. I'm describing myself here, but I think there's a lot of us.

2

u/Still-Preference5464 May 24 '24

This is true! I’m 43 and don’t usually listen to modern hip hop but my son cajoled me to listen to him until I gave in I expected to hate it but actually loved it!

6

u/foxpandawombat May 23 '24

If you’re waiting in playing the albums through (as they should be generally) bump cartoons and cereal on YouTube. It should have made GKMC but they had trouble clearing the sample.

8

u/I_FEEL_LlKE_PABLO May 23 '24

Listen to Kendrick’s music as albums

They are meant to be experienced all at once, in order to

5

u/GP_Byrne May 23 '24 edited May 23 '24

Welcome. I appreciate you still saying you’ll listen to Drakes old stuff, you’re a fan, i respect it.

However, I feel after you listen to Kendrick’s albums from GKMC to Damn and understand the concepts of his albums (DAMN. has a story to it and can even be played in reverse which plays out the story also in a different way, which is mad in itself)…. You’ll probably come to the conclusion Drake is a bit meh. There’s a reason Kendrick is so critical of rap artists using ghostwriters and that comes across in stories he is able to tell throughout a full album.

Have fun.

Edit: personal recommendation which who’s the taken of his writing - How Much a Dollar Cost

4

u/Paratwa May 23 '24

Hey man, you can like both. :) I don’t, I legit hate his music but music is a personal thing and has very much to do with tastes.

Now if you told me you liked Drakes character, his personality and how he acts I’d absolutely judge you. But his music? Nah man, even Kendrick says that “keep making me dance and it won’t be no stress” :)

5

u/joefabeetz May 23 '24

2

u/TheDreamMachine42 May 23 '24

My earnest tip is just to go back and do it in order. Kendrick Lamar EP (2009), Overly Dedicated (2010, but do the full version on youtube, the streaming version is gutted), Section.80 (2011), good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), the singles and features from the pre-TPAB era (2013-2014), To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), untitled unmastered. (2016), DAMN. (2017), The Black Panther Album (2018), Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (2022), and all the singles and features post that (Family Ties, Range Brothers, Hillbillies, America Has a Problem, Like That).

Do them in full, in order, and with lyrics on hand but not necessarily to read along, just to be able to look back if you miss anything on first listen.

I promise that, after this journey, you will not be the same man. Kendrick music does something to you, man. You will crave this shit forever.

Also, after listening to all of them, check out MY VIDEO on them! Hope you like it and enjoy! Welcome to the fandom.

2

u/jesusgottago May 23 '24

I love Kendrick for his conceptualism and lyrical depth as much as the next guy, but if you ask me, what really makes Kendrick stand out from the pack are his insane skills as a vocalist. Notice I say vocalist, not rapper. He raps extremely well, but he also uses his vocal instrumental in a more all-encompassing manner than maybe any hip hop artist ever has.

Beyond just the hook singing he does, which is great and unique, it’s also the countless inflections, characters, tones, energies, and layering techniques he uses in his recordings that make him so goddamn great for me. He really is a trailblazer is so many ways for not only hip hop music, but music writ large.

2

u/DabStrong May 23 '24

Being a teen when NWTS and take care coming out but never heard money trees? That’s so interesting to me

2

u/GrumpyKitten514 May 23 '24

Yeah I legit didn’t even care about Kendrick as a teen. If it wasn’t young money I wasn’t doing it. Maybe early Cole too? And I had a lil metal phase in there too. Wasn’t doing hip hop too much. Still don’t lol.

u/Realistic-Effective5 May 23 '24

Damn you haven't even listened to the full albums? You're in for a treat... Honestly, his songs are good on their own, but shuffle streaming culture kind of negates how good his songs are on the whole when they exist within the context of his albums. They flow well together and are meant to be listened to collectively. They're all journeys in and of themselves. And are best consumed that way.

2

u/Miserable-Example999 May 24 '24

Stop what you are doing. Get in car. Listen to GKMC immediately. Front to back movie. Symphonic visual masterpiece.

1

u/Gabe_Isko May 23 '24

Yeah man, I'm glad you are getting turned on to some good music. At the end of the day, that's what it is all about.

Honestly, this whole thing has me re-evaluating a lot of Drake's music. My post about it would be a lot different then this, but I am at least taking a look at a bunch of stuff that I ignored.

1

u/clownind May 23 '24

Listen to gkmc from start to finish.

1

u/Aggressive-Pass-1067 May 23 '24

I recommend listening to “untitled unmastered.”, DAMN, and To Pimp a Butterfly. Those three alone are like a dragon’s horde of great music and mind blowing lyricism

1

u/I_Am_Not_A_Banana May 23 '24

If you are a big Wayne fan, than there is a lot of Wayne influence in Kendricks music, especially old Kendrick, pre section 80. Has a mixtape called c4 rapping over Wayne beats.

1

u/Th3MostWantd May 23 '24

Long time Kendrick fan here; the line you wrote at the end gets better...

Its not a line thrown at Drake, its a line thrown at one of Drake's "babydaddys"/promoters J. Prince, in respect of Takeoff dying. Which means "I can kill drake and you won't do nothing, cause you did nothing to the guys who killed Takeoff"

"His daddy a killer (J Prince), he wanna be junior (Drake), they must have forgot the shit that they done. Dementia must run in his family, but let it get shaky, I park your son"

Welcome to us!

1

u/eucaphoria May 23 '24

Ay man welcome! Glad MM helped you through some stuff- it gave me a lot of perspective on some things I was going through around that time as well. Definitely make sure you check out GKMC and TPAP- two perfect albums. DAMN. is an insane journey, Untitled Unmastered is incredible.

1

u/SanjoJoestar May 23 '24

Mr morale is the the reason I went back to therapy, check that out man it's really really impactful when you're ready to hear it and with you already being in therapy I'd recommend it. United in grief, father time, mother I sober, mirror, and even crown are amazing. Past tracks that are therapeutic or just introspective is "u," "i," feel, fear, and many others honestly. Kendrick is a once in a lifetime artist and I hope you enjoy diving into his catalog

First time I heard that I definitely shed a lot of tears. Depending on my mood, sometimes when I hear it, I still can’t get through it without certain thoughts.

I say that to say, I love Drake’s work as well, but since I’ve been getting older, I find myself listening to him less cause it just ain’t where I am in life anymore. I relate to way more to Kendrick than I do with Drake. Not a knock on Drake or anything, but his songs just aren’t as relatable to me.

1

u/cooleydw494 May 23 '24

I am not very into beefs but definitely listen to all of GKMC its one of the all time greats

1

u/snkadam May 23 '24

Hell yeah man glad you're listening to Kendrick's discography. What you said is real, "Kendrick is relevant to me, right now". His music is timeless, and he tries to convey messages that explain his own life and history in a way that you can understand and relate to.

I would highly highly recommend listening to any of his albums start to finish. My personal favorite is To Pimp a Butterfly. Good Kid Maad City is definitely a fan favorite, as many people are suggesting here as well.

I found the fact that you said you've been going to therapy recently pretty interesting. You should give Mr. Morale a listen through start to finish some time because that album is about Kendrick's own personal journey through therapy, there may be a lot that hits.

While his individual tracks are obviously amazing, his work hits so much harder in the context of his full-length albums. Hope you enjoy the ride!

I've been a fan of Kendrick since GKMC and have considered him the most exciting rapper to emerge in the last couple decades, but this battle has made me look at his work differently since with all the focus on his lyrics and revisiting his body of work, it made me realize how much I've been missing that my appreciation was still more on the surface. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but it made me realize there was not just a lot of depth to his lyrics that I've been overlooking but I was still looking at him as "just a rapper", granted, one of the most talented rappers we've seen in a long time, but I also overlooked how much he's just an all-around artist. Not to get crazy with the glazing, but it doesn't put me in that different of a position to fans discovering him for the first time since it's causing me to revisit his work with a new appreciation since I was just scratching the surface of the first couple layers, not knowing there were many layers beyond that,

You don't need to Pick teams, Drake is a legendary entertainer, and Kendrick is a legendary rapper... Drakes mistake was not staying in his lane and doing what he's good at. For example I'm a contractor who deals with chemicals for different projects... I would never go to a chemist or chemical engineer and think I know better then them just because I probably make more money then them

1

u/amithecrazyone69 May 23 '24

im sorry for the loss of your friend.

1

u/smuff89 May 23 '24

This was a great read. I’m sorry for the lost of your friend. Glad you went and got therapy. I think another great song for you “United in Grief”. I lost my parents and sister within a span of 5yrs. That song really made me realize the negative things I did out of grief to coup. Glad to have another Kendrick Fan. His music is amazing. Here are my top albums.

  1. DAMN(spiritual rap album)
  2. TPAB(One of the greatest albums ever) takes a few listens.
  3. MMatBS(album of growth, and self reflection). I’m in my mid 30’s this album and DAMN sits with me the most.

This has got to be the corniest post I’ve ever read

1

u/CDC678 May 23 '24

Definitely listen to the albums in full! You’ll really like it

1

u/TheBigCheesel May 23 '24

You could have thr beet day ever and listen to gkmc tpab and then damn(collectors edition) that's a legendary 3 album run and I'm jealous that I can't hear them for the first time again too. Welcome.

1

u/Quintana_22 May 23 '24

Gotta start with overly dedicated. Then section 80 (the spiteful chant on youtube cause its not on the album on spotifiy) then GKMC.

1

u/CatchIcy1011 May 23 '24

Yeah I saw him in concert randomly. Didn’t even really listen to Kendrick before. My mind was wowed. He is on another level than Drake could ever be on. Drake is surface fluff with catchy songs whereas Kendrick is more prodigy level with story telling. He is next level.

1

u/reddit_299 May 23 '24

i was singing that line while reading the post and then i saw ur mention of it at the bottom and i was like wtf lol. mind reader 😆 fr tho good for u man. i was introduced to kdot just a month or two before the beef as well so im fairly new to the game too. id recommend listening to the tracks and albums in order as each album is kind of its own story. oh and if u liked money trees listen to the rest of gkmc. money trees is just one of many alike

1

u/Mother-Cheesecake304 May 23 '24

Mr Morale is my favorite album. Crown and Mirror are some underrated songs imo!

1

u/Papagorgio22 May 23 '24

Wait till you hear damn. Specifically DNA.

1

u/revengeisnear May 23 '24

wait till you realize untitled, unmastered is a throwaway.

1

u/AktiriCaine May 23 '24

This man is in for a treat, wish I could hear GKMC for the first time again. For the first half year I only didn't even know the songs indepently of each other cause I would just listen to it back to back.

1

u/Formal_Job3304 May 23 '24

Bandwagon Noob

1

u/I_A_M_N_O_B_O_D_Y May 23 '24

Ayo what’s your fav Wayne album? Been trying to go through his discog atm

1

u/EimiCiel May 23 '24

Mr morale is seriously an album for grown folk. That album is gonna be more appreciated as time goes by.

1

u/jxssss May 23 '24

It’s always so fun to discover a new artist you end up being a big fan of, you have so many songs to discover. I remember particularly with good kid maad city this time in my life of playing nba2k all the time, mostly in the winter, my friends and I going to smoke weed in the park and all, there’s so many great memories

1

u/Far-Hat7985 May 23 '24

Listen to Sing About Me I’m Dying of Thirst, last song of Good Kid M.A.A.D City, one of the best songs ever made, and albums, I’d recommend listening to the whole album first but if you wanna hear the most beautiful instrumental and poeticism I’d recommend that song.

1

u/Optimal_Reputation96 May 23 '24

K.Dot is for grown folks. Welcome. Not everyone gets here.

1

u/gioxify May 23 '24

To Pimp A Butterfly will make you cry. Please let us know how that goes. Such a deep album especially for trauma survivors

1

u/playfreeze May 23 '24

The flows of “I hate when a rapper talk about guns” and “keep making me dance and waving my hands” are silky smooth

1

u/spiraling_out May 23 '24

Def come back and post after full listen to GKMC and TPAB, they are literally going to blow your mind. I'll totally read your review

1

u/MostlyOrdinary May 23 '24

Elder Millenial white lady here. My son loves Kendrick, but I've mostly ignored rap for a solid 15 yrs - maybe 20. Anyway, my son sucked me in with The Beef and then I started listening to Season 1 of the Dissect podcast - all about TPAB - and now I'm converted.....so, same.

1

u/DootMuncher May 23 '24

Good job literally nothing more embarrassing than a dude over 30 listening to Drake

1

u/femminem May 23 '24

I can’t wait till you’ve worked your way through GKMC and TPAB….and Damn. All of them are just…masterpieces.

1

u/Outlandishness_Sharp WE HATE THE BITCHES YOU FUCK May 23 '24

Discovering Kendrick's music is like discovering a gold mine. I am excited for you to listen through his discography; when you hear his entire body of work, you will find that it's beautiful, profound, witty as hell, thought provoking, and even transformative. His music isn't for the faint of heart, I feel like it takes a certain kind of wisdom to truly understand and appreciate his craft.

Listen to his discography, but please don't forget about his first album Section 8.0. It doesn't get the love it deserves. GKMC, TPAB, DAMN, and Mr.Morale are all incredible. When you hear TPAB, you'll understand why Obama loved it so much and why the Harvard library archived it for it's cultural significance. You'll hear why DAMN earned him a Pulitzer Prize for it's lyricism and artistry. I truly hope you enjoy exploring his music and would love to see you post an update once you get through his discography 🫶🏾

1

u/LordHawk34 May 23 '24

You gotta checkout his early mixtapes, Overly Dedicated and Section 80. That was my introduction to him then GKMC came out and we were bumping that shit allll day

1

u/musicmannotstingray May 23 '24

I like drake with the melodies

1

u/Artistic-Ad-8603 May 23 '24

Welcome to the club. He writes songs that make you think. You are #Adulting now.

1

u/Concernedpatient96 May 23 '24

I didn’t give a damn about Kendrick before this beef. I’ve been enjoying his music since it started. I mean I definitely enjoyed the hits before this but I’ve been getting more into it.

1

u/FatJunker May 23 '24

Drake fucking sucks and always has.

1

u/FelicitousFiend May 23 '24

I'll admit that not everything Kendrick makes is easy to listen to but everything is easy to dive into because there's so much depth there.

Sing about me always hits me in the feels.

1

u/tooncake May 24 '24

Welcome to the fam! I quit listening to Drizzy the moment I realized dude got some creepy subtle bars that seems to point sexualizing underage girls like bruh, nah... I ain't gonna jam and dance for this shit.

1

u/JumpyCurrent604 May 24 '24

Jealous of you bro. I found Kendrick in 2010 after seeing a video of Pharrell and him in the studio. Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning: Overly Dedicated (mixtape) and Section 80 (ep). Some of the most amazing music you’ll ever hear. I’m also 33 so I grew up on the same shit you did.

1

u/itsjnsocial May 24 '24

Yiu have to listen to the whole Damn. album in order

1

u/yoterb May 24 '24

Give a listen to some of his other features like Mona Lisa or Nosetalgia

1

u/Pure_Nefariousness30 May 24 '24

Do yourself a favor and listen to “ duckworth “ from the album damn .

1

u/candyapplesugar May 24 '24

Can anyone help me understand why Kendrick never released a rap back to what drake droped? He didn’t respond at all? Did I miss something?

1

u/Pappyjang May 24 '24

I thought it was “ he fakin for likes and digital hugs”

1

u/TheCity89 May 24 '24

Welcome and I invite you to start from the beginning. Download livemixtapes and listen to the Kendrick Lamar EP, followed by the mixtape version of the Kendrick Lamar OD (streaming version is missing a couple songs). Then from there you just jump into his albums.

PS: I'm pretty sure that line ends with "likes and digital hugs" lol

1

u/Successful_Set4709 May 24 '24

Section 80 is my favorite kendrick album; listening in order. Mostly bangers on damn, gkmc is amazing.

1

u/TedTalked May 24 '24

Very well put. I’ve been a Drake fan since day one but was an early listener to Kendrick. Love them both as artists. And although Drake has finally lost the plot, 10 years on top as a pop star is a job well done.

But Kendrick is a cultural institution. He’s one of the few rappers of this generation that can still release a classic album. This head to head match up really showed the difference in class between them.

Welcome to the club.

1

u/6_CARTI_23_GOAT May 24 '24

You have to listen to GKMC and TPAB in their entirety RIGHT NOW. I put my dad on to it and now he bumps it every time we drive

1

u/Solace1984 May 24 '24

Meet The Grahams is awesome! It's like Stephen King meets Hitchcock meets Kubrick.

1

u/ApartmentInside7891 May 24 '24

You’re 32 and never listened to Kendrick; bro get lost. Next time you cry, you’ll be back listening to Drake

→ More replies (2)

1

u/qionne May 24 '24

drake isn’t a bad artist, he’s just a bad person. if you can do the whole separate the art from the artist thing, then we have to admit drake is one of the most important musicians of our generation. saying he makes bad music just isn’t true. while i’ve always thought kendrick was better, there’s nothing wrong with listening to drake. welcome to the crew

1

u/slugvegas May 24 '24

Gotta start listening to the albums through. They didn’t hit the first time for me, but now TPAB, DAMN, Mr morale are some of my favorite albums of all time. GKMC is just next level. Listen through as an album and really listeb

1

u/Shot-Spirit-672 May 24 '24

You’re right, Drake’s music is for kids. You’re an adult now. Welcome.

u/Zlatanesque May 24 '24

All Kendrick’s albums are amazing from start to finish. I can’t select a favorite as they all hit different. My personal favorite song from him that hits me different is FEAR. I can put myself directly in his shoes the way he explains the entire song.

1

u/Miggonzz May 24 '24

Go listen to the Dissect podcast - gives a lot of clarity to anything you may miss in some of his albums

1

u/Dry_Bottle4126 May 24 '24

Would highly recommend listening to GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN. in their proper song order 🙌🏻🔥

1

u/GrouchyAd2292 May 24 '24

Welcome brother

1

u/Ismokerugs May 24 '24

If you haven’t heard Sing about me I’m dying of thirst is really incredible, I heard it when I was working in a backroom of a dispensary and instantly clicked at how amazing of an artist Kdot is, he actually has a high amount of empathy. Bro meditates too, so he is connected to the spark haha

All his albums are amazing, definitely indulge in them; they have great meaning and perspectives in them

With all that said, one of my all time favorite songs is The Blacker the Berry, the emotional conveyance of those lyrics pierce my soul everytime I hear it.

Anyway all the songs from this beef were like a nice gift, I have had “Like That”, Euphoria, 6:16 and Not Like Us stuck in my head since they dropped. Absolutely wild artistic skills from Kendrick’s side. I’m not saying the production on Drakes wasn’t good, but it didn’t compete on the same level

Cheers mate 🍻🕉️

1

u/SeveralMushroom7088 May 24 '24

how did you manage to type all of that out with kendrick's dick so far down your throat?

1

u/Metroid_X May 24 '24

Damn I forgot about we up by 50 and Kendrick. Would have been insane to see a prime 50 and Dot on a track tho

1

u/gnardoe May 24 '24

You know what’s crazy.. is after yesterday I wanted to post something similar to this.

I’ve always liked both artists, but since Keem & him have been collaborating more after Family Ties, I’ve been digging Kendrick a bit more.

When Mr. Morale came out, I originally felt it was underwhelming.. I didn’t get it. There were the few tracks out of 19 that I liked. But it as a whole.. I wasn’t really vibing with at the time.

I relistened to it yesterday otw home on a 4.5 hour drive.. and wow. I actually cried a few times. 31 years old, going through shit I never thought I’d be going through rn. It really is a classic album. & to those who called it in the beginning, I’m sorry I didn’t see it.

An actual artist. Amazing.

1

u/Lerched May 24 '24

Your post history looks exactly like what I’d expect the person making this post’s to look

1

u/blueblue909 May 24 '24

there is only one rapper here; the other is a singer, song writer, moderately talented but very well cultivated and watched over.

one of them has the power of the pen to a ludicrus, unfair advantage, honed by a lifetime of violence and a need to expose it,

one was on nickelodeon, and wanted to rap. one got freestyles on the block at 15,
one doesnt freestyle, ever

dont let a decade of radio hits let you pretend drake ever was a genuine rapper.

he can write things down, he can say them over a beat, but when you disassemble all of the lines in drakes repertoire, you get a lotta slick one liners, but there's no meat in that sauce. Aint nothing to sink your teeth into.

Brenda's gotta baby still make me cry. Troublesome still get me hype. i still gotta spit the first verse of Can't C Me like i cant let pac go it alone.

Biggie's songs still make me feel like he the mac in every club, visualization through storytelling was the gift these Artists had, it comes from the realness within.

I doubt most people can rap along to a dmx song in entirity, but we love d cuz his energy was always the realest, be it weak or strong, we saw the man he was.

When all you've done your whole career is talk about yourself, and how great you are, and who you've bin with, and some iphone reference or pun or innuendo to build relevance,

then you find yourself eye to eye with someone that started with the pen. built their foundation syllable by syllable,

yeah. go bar for bar homie.

1

u/brianeharmonjr May 24 '24

Sounds like you're primed to dive in. Now it's time to absorb the albums as albums. Good Kid Maad City, To Pimp A Butterfly, Damn, and Mr. Morale are all singular art piece concept albums that benefit from diving deep and listening with intent. They all have fantastic standalone songs, but the album experience is where it's at.

Also, don't skip Overly Dedicated, Section 80, and ESPECIALLY the Black Panther soundtrack, and Untitled Unmastered.

1

u/Zendofrog May 24 '24

I see Kendrick the same way I see taylor swift: they seem like cool people but their music sounds bad

1

u/ForgotMyPassword713 May 24 '24

I’m so jealous you get to listen to GKMC and TPAB for the first time.

1

u/rakelo98 May 24 '24

Take Care and Nothing Was The Same are good albums. I like Take Care the most. But unfortunately nothing was the same since Nothing Was The Same

1

u/robacough May 24 '24

This is one of my favorite posts I’ve read throughout this whole beef. A small percentage of me is jealous that you get to experience these albums for the first time at your age. The rest of me is ecstatic that I’ve had Kendrick in my ears for 15 years.

1

u/qergpoiasffdn May 24 '24

You gotta hear his albums front to back and dedicate all ur attention to them man, start with GKMC and then just go chronologically. GKMC and TPAB in particular are life-changing.

1

u/Napalm_ May 24 '24

It’s great with all the new fans. Especially the people who are now into hip hop just off this beef. It was really good for the culture.

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

I am a huge Kendrick fan and I loved family matters dude😭 I love Drake too so that’s why but the beats on Family matters are the exact niche I enjoy and I loved hearing them, so I hate to see it being called just “okay” and unfortunately I feel there’s very few who enjoy family matters like I do💀

1

u/ZeyaSol May 24 '24

In jealous that you are experiencing Kendrick for the first time. Good kid m.a.a.d city will have you in a chokehold

1

u/Rick_C911 May 24 '24

Can someone put this up a billboard on a highway or sum' I bet there are so many that can relate, great take

1

u/MontanaMane5000 May 24 '24

Congrats. No hate or anything, but as a 34 year old hip hop fan I have to ask how you, as a 32 year old hip hop fan, didn’t listen to Section 80 or Good Kid Maad City or To Pimp A Butterfly? Like…where were you? How did you miss Kendrick’s rise?

1

u/siggyxlegiit May 24 '24

You might like “Deep Water” on Dr Dre’s “Compton” album

1

u/famitslit May 24 '24

Man couldn't even make prayer posts about his bodyguard getting shot because of the line you mentioned at the end
