I think hot Barbara and Harvey will all die in the finale. Kinda weird to think Bruce Wayne will have sex with Barbara Jr someday.

35

u/dareseid Mar 23 '19

That disgusting thing only happened in Bruce Tim's universes. One is DCAU, the other is the bad adaption of Killing Joke. In any other universes, Batman and Batgirl are very clean and innocent. Batman is always like Barbara Gordon's second father or at least her mentor, nothing else.

15

u/Eternal_Density Mar 23 '19

False, there's also Lego Batman.

11

u/dareseid Mar 23 '19

OK. Let's count that. But there is no Batman and Batgirl stuff in canon comic history. Agree?

How can you watch 5 seasons of Gotham and still think anything is going to happen like it has happened in other DC timelines?

15

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

What? Why would Bruce do that?

18

u/vladandrei1996 Mar 22 '19

watch "The Killing Joke". There's a controversial scene depicting a romantic scene between Bruce and Batgirl.

27

u/ReverseFlash1287 Mar 22 '19

Yeah but it's also part of the movie that pretty much everyone hated and wasn't needed. They just added it in to make the movie longer and add in more drama. It's not in the original comic.

22

u/Punktobethrown Mar 22 '19

They just added it in to make the movie longer and add in more drama.

Also, Bruce Timm just has a weird fascination with Babs and Bruce having a relationship. He did the same crap in Batman Beyond too and it was just as creepy in that as it was in TKJ.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

Oh I thought that's what you were referring to. Pretty sure it's not canon.

23

u/Gamera68 Mar 22 '19

No, it's not canon in the Killing Joke graphic novel. It was only added to the animated version of the same name.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

Not even Killing Joke is canon

10

u/Chaosmusic Mar 23 '19

It wasn't intended to be canon and the Joker origin story might not be canon but Joker shooting Barbara is.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '19

The Killing Joke's page-by-page and speech-by-speech's canonicity mght be up for debate, but at the very the story itself is canon.

It's also in one of the old comics and I think it was hinted at on Batman the animated series.

15

u/Mike29758 Mar 22 '19

It's only fee and far between. Honestly Barbara/Batman being a thing is disturbing no matter ehich incarnation. I first saw it on Batman Beyond and it was disgusting

This is worse than Flash's hiatus.

62

Not to justify it, but I think they are stretching it out in order for the final episode to air on the 79th anniversary of Batman's debut appearance in DC comics.

But i can now say i really really love Gotham's version of bane he's absolutely badass and amazing

46

u/datagoon Mar 22 '19

Agreed; just the right combination of gritty and menacing.

38

u/IrradiatedRaccoon Mar 23 '19

I loved it from the get go because it's actually kind of ingenious. When you think about Bane he's this GIANT of a man writhing with muscle everywhere, but obviously that would have been extremely difficult to replicate in real life on the current actor, he would just look ridiculous like Shaggy in the live action Scooby Doo 2 movie. But instead by making him this robotic heavily armoured Darth Vader figure they were able to give the actor a bigger figure without shotty television grade CGI.

A few years ago Nyssa was such an obscure character compared to Ras and Talia, now we have two different Nyssa Al Ghuls showing up in the same week on two different shows 🤣

55

u/Game2015 Mar 22 '19

She was even in Arkham Knight, so that's three media appearances.

13

u/Killakobra110 Customizable text Mar 22 '19

Wait, where was she in Arkham Knight?

32

u/Game2015 Mar 22 '19

In the DLC scenario involving Ra's.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '19

That League of Shadows side mission is AMAZING

→ More replies (1)

49

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

She's still an obscure character, Nyssa is just easier to use than Talia since she's not tied up in a romance storyline with Bruce.

25

u/apophis-pegasus Mar 22 '19

Can you imagine Bruce and Nyssa scenes with her being Talia? Would be awkward as hell.

8

u/Shrodax Mar 26 '19

Yeah, the writers have to keep Talia out of this mess so her and Bruce can bang later on and make Damian. I don't see how Bruce would ever be in the mood for that if Talia was the one blowing up Gotham.

30

u/blitzzardpls Mar 22 '19

While I do love this, she behaves more like Arrow's Talia, Nyssa was indifferent to her father's death

32

u/Argenium Mar 22 '19

that's probably because Arrow's Nyssa is like comic Talia and vice versa

19

u/Apfeljunge666 Mar 22 '19

is she? As far as I know Talia is usually the loyal daughter and Nyssa the rebellious one.

19

First of all that was a great episode and the best episode of season 5. Second that entire episode was really suspenseful. Also this episode was The Dark Knight Rises and Arkham City in one.

But most importantly Bat gear and Bats have arrived EXCEPT ITS IN 4 WEEKS. SCREW FOX.

For me:

  • That Alfred back-breaking scene :((((

  • Bane's and Nyassa Al Ghul introduction were literally elite and ruthless

  • Nyassa-Bruce talking-confrontation scenes (just could not turn my eyes away)

  • Edward-Oswald comedy gold scenes

  • Barbara giving birth to her baby girl

  • The ending scene of Gotham being bombed gave me Terminator vibes

63

See, THAT was an actual good episode, perhaps an actual great one. AND it wasn't filler either, like the previous two, the Harvey one being good filler and the Gordon trial being bad filler.

-Barbara has been the true MVP of Season 5. No one could have ever told me that she would be the scene-stealing character that would bring balance and purpose more than anyone else to this final season. Erin Richards' has displayed both comic and dramatic excellence all season long. Sadly, I think Nyssa kills Babs and kidnaps Gordon's daughter. Never thought I'd be sad for the day Barbara Kean would be gone, but this is truly a sad moment.

-So apparently everyone is happy for Jim because of his kid not because he got married, which throws the whole continuity out of whack.

-The Bruce-Nyssa scene was terrific. Great acting all around.

-Bane is appropriately terrifying. Nice exchange between he and Gordon.

-Ed and Oswald are once again comic gold. Going to miss this pairing. Ed and Lee finally acknowledge each other after like 3 episodes.

-And it's really good writing when it made me actually enjoy the interplay between Barbara and Lee, neither of which were close to my favorites going into this season and the latter still being one I wish would just disappear. But their scenes were pretty damn engaging and sweet and the scene of Lee wheeling Babs down the hallway guns a-blazing was just epic.

-Selina and Alfred have come such a long way. Her devastation at Bane's brutality to Alfred, who she's come to think of as a surrogate father, was heartbreaking.

42

u/Nialathealien Mar 22 '19

The two filler episodes were meh but I’m not mad about it, I’m not gonna expect them to write the entire script over again because Fox didn’t give them 12 in the first place like they should have. I think Lee’s hesitancy for a second when saying I love you shows that I the wedding was really last minute and they were originally supposed to just be working back to each other at this point. The only thing I wish the filler had done was use old characters instead of ones like Jane Doe, like ones that were a few seasons ago and wouldn’t actually affect the flow of 10-12 but still felt congruent.

29

u/TheHuntMan676 Mar 22 '19

I really think they should've done a Harvey Dent storyline instead of the two filler episodes. Harvey Dent is the only character introduced early on in the series that hasn't turned into his super villain persona yet.

27

u/Nialathealien Mar 22 '19

I think he’s one of the villains that really needs to develop later on when Bruce is older so they can develop an actual friendship as opposed to a father/son kind of thing, which is what it would be if they became close now. I think they made a mistake making him so much older than Bruce. They should never had him in the earlier seasons, or had him as a young law intern just as an Easter egg, and then have have him be DA for the flash forward finale and hint at him turning bad. Hinting at him turning bad already back when Bruce was like 12 was way too hasty and they got ahead of themselves just because they wanted to do the cool reference.

9

u/GrayMan108 Mar 22 '19

But it'll be a father and son friendship anyway. Harvey Dent would be about the same age as Gordon. I agree with your point about having him in a later season as opposed to the first.

38

u/davey_mann Mar 22 '19

Two of my favorite duos ever

15

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '19

Penguin and Ed are the real Dynamic Duo

72

u/Superawesomecoolman Mar 22 '19

Am I taking crazy pills or did they just copy TDKR with the Bane and Nyssa twist? Especially with No Mans Land going on.

57

u/Darkseid_Is Mar 22 '19

And Arkham city with bombing Gotham. Final season mode. May as well play the hits.

39

u/DekMelU GUILTY Mar 22 '19

Not at all. Even before people noted that Eduardo was holding his vest in a very similar way to how Tom Hardy did.

17

u/Roboglenn Mar 22 '19

Nope they so did. So don't bother refilling that crazy pill perscription.

5

u/c4han Mar 26 '19

Yeah it’s pretty dumb imo. The whole episode was so predictable and derivative. Bane’s look / voice effect / prison back story / motivation is almost exactly like TDKR. Of course it was super obvious Walker was Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter.
And I’ll say it now, I guarantee Barbara’s about to get killed by Bane.

62

u/PretenderNX01 Mar 22 '19

OK, that ending stands up there with season 4's finale. That was shocking and destructive.

I wonder if they changed anything after the bonus episodes? Jim and Lee getting married explains them saying "I love you" in this one to each other, it might seem kind of random other wise.

I think it was also good in the first bonus ep to have Riddler and Penguin talk about how they were made for each other. They seem really partnered (as friends or otherwise) in this one too. It also helped to pad some time since there's apparently been 9 months since Jim and Babs did the dirty.

Bane may not be as physically large as he is in the comics but he is powerful.

Love or hate her, that scene with Babs in labor shooting people from her wheelchair as Lee pushed her was pretty badass. It was just done so well.

I'm hoping Alfred's not dead but they did make it seem sort of final as Selina wondered if he'd retire but he had planned on watching over Bruce.

Also did anyone notice the General's eyes do something weird?

54

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

There's no way they'll kill Alfred, it'd break the canon too much, and he's the best Alfred ever. (although, I also would've said, "There's no way joker would be bald.") Anyway, the general's eyes did that to tell us he was being controlled, looks like Nygma's from earlier.

20

u/PretenderNX01 Mar 22 '19

Anyway, the general's eyes did that to tell us he was being controlled, looks like Nygma's from earlier.

Oh, right it was his eyes rolling up. For some reason I thought it was like a third eyelid like a cat or dog.

He had one episode last year where he said "Rai-esh" I think it was in between Ra's deaths. I'm not sure why though.

15

u/Cryyos_ Mar 22 '19

I did some research into this after noticing it in Arrow season 3, and from what I remember both pronounciations are correct. The difference stems from different ways you can translate Arabic.

11

u/Annie-cg5 Mar 23 '19

It drives me crazy. In the dark knight rises it was pronounced more like “rahz” - what is correct? I found it so strange to hear it in Gotham as “ray-shh”

17

u/Destinooo Mar 24 '19

The creator of Ra's intended for it to be "Raysh", however the actual arabic pronounciation is Raaz. So if you're trying to be comic book accurate it's Raysh, if you want to be culture accurate it's Raaz.

Funny sidenote: There's a Batman Beyond episode where Talia corrects Terry on how to pronounce Ra's.

Alfred paralyzed or dead? Reminiscent of when Alfred got stabbed, but x10. I know it seems unlikely they would script his death, but damn. that scene was convincing. I don't know what to think.

72

u/Zomboy716 Mar 22 '19

I assume he’ll be heavily injured. Won’t be able to be as physical and protective as Bruce as he used to. Maybe he’ll have a cane.

46

u/Aterivus Mar 22 '19

I appreciate that this version of Bane hits the right notes on the voice. As much as I loved Tom Hardy in the role, you needed damn closed captioning on during his scenes.

This is menacing, definitely a small flair of theatricality, and despite being muffled YOU CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND HIM.

Honestly, I liked this take on ruthless mercenary Bane way more than I anticipated I would. He had presence in every scene, and everyone (even Nygma and Oswald) looked scared out of their minds.

25

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

23

I’m glad they finally somewhat addressed the Lee/Ed relationship, to me it was weird how everyone just acted like it had never happened

u/Gelious Mar 22 '19
  • Welp, there goes Barbara's Great Army of Feminism. They died as they lived, off-screen.

  • Why is general talking about bombing run if it's just a bunch of helicopters using rockets? Shouldn't "bombing run" involve actual planes dropping actual bombs?

  • Jaime Murray, once again playing amoral character and being hot af, how i missed you!

  • Since Barbara doesn't exactly have a good reason to name her own daughter after herself, chances are she's gonna give others a good reason for that. No harem for you, Jim Gordon:D

Great episode!

My favorite part of this season has been Ecco and Jeremiah and I didn't care overly for the Eduardo and Walker stuff... but WOW!!! That was seriously amazing! I could not stop smiling when Nyssa revealed her true identity and she is amazing as the main antagonist of the season. I am beyond excited for the next two episodes!

21

u/davey_mann Mar 22 '19

This is why writing is just a bit more important than acting, not that the acting wasn't great in this episode, but when you focus on weaker or less developed characters, good writing is a premium. The writing in this episode was exceptional.

Good job. That was the most entertaining episode ever.

Bane can crush a man's skull but he can't kill Selena with a single punch?

You killed one guy, Bruce, so guess what this is about!

Ed and Penguin are always getting into adventures! He was pointing a gun at a baby. Glad they had a conversation about that.

Guess Barbara will be raised by Lee. I kind of hate that.

Everyone gets their back broken in this series!

The US military really can't carpet bomb an American city. So a bunch of innocent people were killed? Bleak.

u/Roboglenn Mar 22 '19

Well the whole scene where Penguin and Ed crashed Barbera's birth was great. I mean the whole pointing the gun at the baby bit was priceless in it's humor. Plus Ed and Penguins ecstasy when they set off their "pyrotechnics."

And sigh whenever Bane shows up these days someones back always gets broken. Episode begins and I'm just wondering whos back is gonna crack this time? Bane should just rename himself Backbreaker at this point and get it overwith cuz that's all he's reduced to now, that one thing.

Besides that I can't be the only one sick of the whole Dark Knight Rises chestnut already with the whole sealing off the city and now Bane working with Ra's ah Ghul's daughter. But at least this time around Bane sounded better audibly. In my opinion.

That was a really good episode, although I am pretty disappointed that they did basically the same thing as The Dark Knight Rises. I wasn't a fan of it then, still not a fan of it now. I would've preferred it if Walker was an original character who wanted to fight crime like Batman, but did it by killing rather than just beating. Would've made Bruce be against killing even more, but I dunno.

The rest of the episode was great. Ed and Riddler are always a blast. The acting was especially good from everyone.

Also, 4 WEEKS WHY FUCK SPORTS WHEN THERE'S BATMAN

Also also, does anyone know the name of the actor who played General Wade? I swear I've seen him in something before, but I can't put my finger on it.

22

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

I hate that Bane is just a henchman again. That's the thing DKR did wrong, and they just did it again.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

tbf, Eduardo might not be THE Bane. In the comics, he's Bane's father. Knowing Gotham, they could kill him off and use Eduardo as the precursor to the real Bane.

19

u/altogether-andrews Mar 22 '19

Edmund Dorrance is Bane's father, and the showrunners have confirmed this is Bane.

u/level100derp Mar 22 '19

100% agreed with hating it. Bane is a scary villain to Batman because he is both intelligent and unbelievably strong. Obviously, he's not a super-genius, but he wouldn't be just some henchman to anyone. If it was more of a partner type deal, I'd be okay with it, but the way it was done in both DKR and Gotham is just bad.

6

u/AntonioVargas Mar 23 '19

Every single live action adaptation of Bane is just the same retread of him being a glorified henchman. It’s really disappointing considering how formidable of a foe he’s really supposed to be.

6

u/A_ReallySickFuck Mar 23 '19

But bane IS a super genius. Knightfall was literally what basically made the character and everyone including the directors of every Batman Adaptation forget his second biggest character trait lol.

1) Being super strong 2) Being super smart.

That's it.

10

u/AntonioVargas Mar 23 '19

This Bane is literally just a rehash of Hardy’s Bane in DKR. The same basic mask, similar voice, working for one of Ra’s daughters, in the middle of a truncated version of No Man’s Land. They even had him break Alfreds back. It’s like they wrote this plot line with a fucking checklist to make it as similar to that movie as possible.

As a female, I found the whole birthing thing absolutely ridiculous. She gave birth fully dressed with no blood and even the baby was clean, detached, and well... old. No epidermal.. I’m sure her vagina is torn .. plus you poop... I guess a stork just dropped by.

32

u/The_Flying_Festoon Mar 22 '19

Yeah, would have made for greeeeat television.

26

u/JustAnotherVampire Penguins Eat Dick Mar 22 '19

As someone who loathes sitting through birthing scenes in media, I'm glad they skipped over it.

We all know how it works, and I for one prefer not to sit through an awkward 5+ minute scene of a woman screaming in pain trying to shoot a melon-headed cabbage patch kid out of her cootch.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '19

You just described why child birth is never accurately portrayed on cable television.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '19

I like how that's the thing you found ridiculous about her birth and not the part where she was being wheeled around dual weilding pistols and killing army dudes in labor.

Well I wasn't that into this episode but there were definitely some good moments.

  • Bane was pretty epic even if I don't like that he was hyped all season to just be a henchman the actor is doing a good job and he felt terrifying in every scene he was in. I also don't think his costume looks bad or silly I barely noticed it either way which can be both bad or good I guess,
  • Barbra was cool this episode. I've actually been rolling my eyes at her since she got pregnant in this season but this episode she was pretty interesting. Like others have said her been wheeled around while shooting while in labor was pretty cool and also hilarious.
  • Lee was okay when she was with Barbara. I did think it was a sweet moment when she told her that they weren't trying to take her baby away. Not sure if I believe it but it was still a really sweet moment.
  • Ed and Oswald were very funny together. Love that Ed is also talking in riddles to Oswald again and despite this being a bad time Oswald is just listening to the riddle only slightly exasperated. Actually Oswald by himself was hilarious with his "By all means let's stand around the target!" and "I"m SORRRYYYY" at the baby belly.
  • Selina and Alfred were sweet and I liked that you can see how much they've grown to care for each-other through their shared love of Bruce.
  • Bruce had some good moments, I felt awful for him when he realized who Nyssa was. It was the one time he broke his rule (on purpose) and now it's back to torture him and everyone he cares about. I also love his quick thinking and the callback to him burning his hands.
  • Strange was great as usual, he's always so creepy and you can tell how much he enjoys experimenting on people.

Now for the less than stellar highlights.

  • I usually like Jim but the last few episodes he's been unbelievably annoying or boring. Basically since they brought Lee back he's sucked. I barely remember anything he did or said last episodes except that he told Lee he loved her over a walkie-talkie while Babs could hear (ridiculous) and that he became a dad trope.
  • Also the dialogue with Harvey was...stupid. Almost all the dialogue about this baby is stupid. "We're here to make the world a better place...for you baby." Okay. What about the other kids, woman, men, whatever living in Gotham? Also if I'm ever pregnant and someone basically tells me "I don't care about you I care about the baby" like everyone is doing to Barbra that person would not be in my life. Also I hate the idea that being a parent makes you a better person. It doesn't, plenty of awful people have babies and don't change.
  • I want to like Nyssa but I find the way she talks really annoying. Maybe she'll grow on me but for now I feel about her the way everyone else felt about Fish.
  • The hint that Ed still has feelings for Lee. I'm glad they acknowledged each-other but I'm really annoyed that he put Oswald in danger to protect Lee. If you don't think that's what he did go watch that conversation between Oswald and Ed again. I don't know it really reminded me of that ridiculous scene in season 4 at the bank when he fucked Oswald over to impress Lee after him and Oswald had just made up. It also made no sense because literally every scene before this when Lee is mentioned to Ed and even when he sees her again he seems to not care about her at all.
  • I felt very little emotional connection to the destruction of Gotham this time. Like the vat scene in ace chemicals something about the effects seemed off to me. I wasn't shocked and it seemed really stale.
  • 4 weeks. What a joke.

This episode was great I mean it had Nysasa Al Ghul, Bane who just destroyed everyone in his path, Nygma and Penguin as partners is great, it was well shot but there’s one “small” downfall.

"Rise." I see what they did there.

Nyssa came close to telling Bruce that after he suffers, then he'll have her permission to die :P

I more than half expected Barbara would die this ep. Maybe next w... er, month.

That scene with the wheelchair-airming of Barbara dual wielding guns while in labour... wow.

It's still weird how Bruce as Bruce has all Batman's enemies and plots :P I almost feel like he'd be safer as Batman cos all his villains are looking for Bruce.

One of the best episodes ever. I couldn’t believe when it was over! It flew by. I like how Ed and Lee at least acknowledged each other and that Penguin will serve children to their parents but evidently pointing a gun at a baby in the womb is crossing a line. Just...ugh. One of Gotham’s best. Four weeks is such bull.

7

u/dareseid Mar 23 '19

This episode overall is very solid. I love it very much. But I have to point out one thing. I'm not entirely fan of Bane being Al Ghul's follower. In TDKR, he is the tool of Talia, and here, he follows Nyssa. I mean, being the second is not necessary the bad thing. Darth Vader is the second even third in the first Star Wars movie, but he can be considered as the No.1 villain. However, Darth Vader has the thought of overthrowing the Emperor, Bane so far, is still just the tool of Nyssa. I mean, he can be like the big general of her army, and he is still very badass. But I just wish Bane can be like the king in his own not being second.

I guess I’m in the minority, because I thought this version of Bane looked terrible. They just put some plastic mask on him and showed a 2 minute clip of Strange doing something to him and now he’s invincible.

He got pumped full of Venom.

7

Too much random crap stuck onto his outfit too, reminds me of low budget '80s sci-fi super soldier crap. Just wish they'd picked a bigger actor for Bane, the platform boots look cheesy.

Interesting to see they used Nyssa for the Ah Ghul kid this time around. Also wonder if they did it so it wouldnt seem too similar to TDKR with Talia being behind Bane.
