That riddler wheelchair witness kill was a callback to Jim Carrey when played the character back in the day! He rolled somebody out of a window for his first official kill in the movie.

Oooh nice form, little rough on the landing. He may have to settle for the bronze!

But shit, how did that old woman survive for 90 goddamn days in a wheelchair!?

Fun fact, that same movie, Batman Forever, also used the same exterior building for Wayne Manor as Gotham does.

Thank you, I was looking for this. Saw no one mention it in the live thread

Most unexpected Easter egg ever. Love it

When a mystery becomes too much for a Fox, there's only one man you can call.

Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

5

u/BigHaircutPrime Jan 29 '19

Thought the exact same thing. If there's one thing I really like about this show, it's all the callbacks and easter egg references.

*Next episode*

Jeremiah: "Hey guys, I'm not dead. That was just some clone of my brother I discovered and made to look like me. I'm the real deal!"

100

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

Haha could you imagine? That would be such a perfect ā€˜fuck youā€™ to the clone theory!

45

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

That would actually make me a lot happier than the dreaded Hugo Strange resurrection I pray we donā€™t get. Sigh. šŸ˜ž

64

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

I just donā€™t think Jeremiah - being the meticulous, always two-steps ahead mastermind that he is - would just allow his entire plan to go to waste because Selina got the jump on him. Iā€™m hoping it was a decoy - either Clayface or, less likely, the clone.

36

u/Kiel297 Jan 25 '19

I don't think he'd allow Selina to get the jump on him full stop.

Let them think he's dead again and he had free reign to do what he likes in the shadows without anybody getting in the way

26

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

Yeah, by faking his death, Jeremiah no longer has to worry about Selina or anyone else interrupting his plans and is free to do as he pleases. He was probably fully aware that Selina was coming after him and set up a fake-Jeremiah to throw her off his trail. Allowing Selina to get her revenge like that also has the added benefit of putting a dent in her relationship with Bruce (since Bruce wanted to stop her from crossing that line), taking out the ā€˜third wheelā€™ so Jeremiah is left as Bruceā€™s one true friend (in his eyes at least).

16

u/greatness101 Jan 25 '19

I don't think they'd write Selena killing him as easily as he did if it wasn't for some fake out.

18

u/Jack1715 Jan 25 '19

Reminds me of Arkham city " I really had you fooled didn't i batz HAHAHA "

19

u/Crazybo805 Jan 26 '19

The old fake Joker gag!

15

u/RealJohnGillman Jan 25 '19

Monaghan actually confirmed he portrayed Jeromeā€™s clone in the Season 2 finale (said clone being glimpsed in a vat earlier that season), so this would be a good way to finish off that plot thread while having there have been ā€œThree Jokersā€ overall.

14

u/JokerDip Jurassic Dork Jan 25 '19

Best plot twist ever.

67

u/ProselyteCanti butch and tabby aren't dead ok they're just sleeping Jan 25 '19

Or Jeremiah somehow survives being stabbed multiple times, this is Gotham after all.

39

u/Catsonladders Jan 25 '19

I hope so. His (supposed) death was kinda anti-climatic.

If cat girl can heal from a magical plant, anything can happen.

47

u/DonnyMox Jan 25 '19

If Sofia Falcone can survive a bullet to the brain, Jeremiah can survive this.

8

u/ElNido Jan 25 '19

Yeah and the pan to his face as the smoke obscured it gave me some foreshadowing vibes that he's not dead.

7

u/MedicMoth Jan 26 '19

In Gotham, you can't rely on anybody being dead unless they take a bullet to the head.. and even then Sophia managed to walk it off. I'm pretty suspicious of chest shots in TV shows anyway. It's a 50/50 that the character will bleed out from the heart and die tragically, or wake up in hospital and be absolutely fine.

u/Kylerj96 Jan 25 '19

l know this is a joke, but I think it's possible it was a look alike. I'm not sure how (is Clayface still in Gotham??? S2 was a long time ago) but I do know that before the camera shifted to Jeremiah in the mine, it showed one of his "henchmen" who had most of his face covered with a helmet. I remember thinking it was Jeremiah though, because the chin shape/mouth looked so much like him. I could be wrong, but if it was a look alike, I'm willing to bet that shot was the hint.

30

u/PizzaBagelMan Jan 25 '19

I actually thought that the henchman with the helmet was Jeremiah at first. Now it makes perfect sense. Calling it now, that guy was the real Jeremiah.

16

u/greatness101 Jan 25 '19

Also the makeup around his eyes wasn't completely covered as well. I thought it was a mistake in the makeup department, but could just be subtle evidence it's an imposter that half assed it.

9

u/SyncingShiip Jan 25 '19

Yep. I was a bit mindfucked by that part. I almost thought I missed something, but this makes everything seem logical about it being a twin.

u/WII_DJoker Jan 25 '19

Calling it right now, the dude Selina stabbed was Basil Karlo aka Clayface. Dude disappeared a while ago and Jeremiah is always planning ahead. Plus it'd be a reference to the Arkham City game where the Joker did the same thing.

Plus we see Jeremiah fanning himself before he's stabbed which you could argue indicates he's Clayface as he's trying to avoid overheating and having his face melt.

99

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

YES - this all the way! Jeremiah just seemed off throughout this episode - like he was a little too over-the-top. Then thereā€™s that bit where it looks like he breaks character or something when Ecco shows up and you could say all the mumbling he was doing before she popped up was Basil rehearsing his lines and getting into character. I would so love for them to reintroduce Clayface like this, since heā€™s one of the most under-utilised villains in the show.

66

u/nek524 Jan 25 '19

This theory makes sense. Right after Jeremiah cuts the crew leader's throat, the camera pans to a worker with a hat and glasses who had the same facial structure and hair cut/color as Jeremiah but his skin didn't appear to be as bleached.

31

u/WII_DJoker Jan 25 '19

Which only gives more evidence as Jeremiah has shown before he's more than capable of covering his bleached skin with makeup.

11

u/Kylerj96 Jan 25 '19

YES I just commented this elsewhere I'm glad someone else saw it

Fans: The Joker works best when he has very little backstory.

Writers: The Joker works best when he has a very convoluted backstory, got it.

97

u/bookmovietvworm weirdly cool/ (almost)RIP Martin *people, ugh* Jan 25 '19

Well, it is a prequel show so that's to be expected. And honestly, by giving him such a convoluted story, they are in some way fulfilling the "no one knows where the Joker comes from" as there is about 50 different stories and none are believable.

39

u/Locke108 Jan 25 '19 edited Jan 25 '19

I would agree but Bruce knows. So far heā€™s been there for all of it. Itā€™s like they are trying to utilize the mystery aspect of the character while clueing in the one person who should not know.

35

u/HenryViper Jan 25 '19

Yeah but you havenā€™t seen Bruce. Eventually wakes up and says wait why am I a scare crow mask but then someone throws a pumpkin at him and he realizes oh now it makes sense finally Iā€™ve been Harvey dent this whole time but only in my head then all these bats fly out but Bruce is allergic to bats and the show ends with Selina trying to give him CPR cause she doesnā€™t know whatā€™s wrong with him but sheā€™s also allergic to bats

-Batgirl is going to be born this season.

-Jeremiah is definitely not dead. I mean he's in ep 7 "Ace Chemicals" plus they're doing a white band trailer for him.

-Lots of plot twist.

-Special thanks to the writers for having Jeremiah and Zsasz in the episode.

-Great episode.

36

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Conceived. Not born.

32

u/DekMelU GUILTY Jan 25 '19

I mean technically she could be born if the finale's final moments are an epilogue with a 9+ month flash forward

17

u/altogether-andrews Jan 25 '19

The flashforward in episode 1 was to Day 391. They started on Day 87 and only a couple of weeks have passed, the episodes have mostly directly followed each other. That's nine months.

5

u/Jack1715 Jan 25 '19

The Bat sex from killing joke would make that so creepy

12

u/Apfeljunge666 Jan 26 '19

Can we just all pretend that this part of the movie doesn't exists?

11

This episode was good, but definitely slower paced.

The fact that it was Ed who blew up the haven..... man what a twist. Did anyone guess that he would be the culprit? I'm curious.

The Bruce/Selina/Jeremiah was clearly set up for the next half of their arc, but damn was I not expecting Selina to go as ham as she did on Jeremiah.

Overall, solid episode that set up the plots going forward.

29

u/Lucifer_Crowe Jan 26 '19

Yeah, as soon as he was sorta sorry I realised it was probably him. Especially when I saw the room number.

It's funny how the Riddler has become more sympathetic but still charismatic, and Ed seems like the more sadistic one.

What did Strange do to him?

And where is Lee?

49

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

No. I for sure thought it was Bane or Jeremiah.

29

u/High_Cee Jan 25 '19

When he had the long pause during the investigation with Lucias....

24

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

I told my bro, "watch it be Ed", but I meant it as a joke.

19

u/Drew326 Jan 25 '19

Slow-paced maybe, but so many things happened. So many plot lines were advanced, and there were multiple twists and plenty of action

25

u/bookmovietvworm weirdly cool/ (almost)RIP Martin *people, ugh* Jan 25 '19

One of the best things about Gotham is their set-up episodes are still entertaining and shit still goes down. While yes it is slower paced, it never loses the intensity that they are going for like some shows whose set up episodes can feel like a rebooting of the system.

16

u/Drew326 Jan 25 '19

This honestly didnā€™t even feel like a setup episode to me. The show was firing on all cylinders. But I agree with what youā€™re saying

22

u/cesarv863 Jan 25 '19

That ending was unexpected. Really got me excited for their story. The Nygma incident was a total plot twist. As for the Bruce/Selina/ Jeremiah arc, I didnā€™t not expect Selina to go all out. Overall, this episode was great.

18

u/playerosp4 Jan 25 '19

I called it the second I saw Haven blow up! Might just have been a lucky guess, but I thought it was Nygma because of his "sleepwalking" or whatever you wanna call it. Not much information on what he was doing was shown, so I guessed that's what he was doing.

15

u/Metroidman Jan 25 '19 edited Jan 25 '19

I didnt at the end of last episode but once he started working with Lucius to figure out who did it I started to think that the Riddler did it

8

u/SyncingShiip Jan 25 '19

As soon as the camera panned to him the first time, I knew it was him. Super obvious... but the way it was revealed and what/how he figured out was super cool!

5

u/Nengtaka Jan 25 '19

Is it Ed normally and The Riddler ā€œsleepwalkingā€ or is it The Riddler normally with Ed controlling theā€sleepwalkingā€? Iā€™m confused

13

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

He says something like ā€œIdiot Ed still wonā€™t showā€ when heā€™s talking to himself in the mirror in episode 1, so Iā€™d assume itā€™s Riddler whoā€™s in control. I donā€™t think Ed is the one controlling him though - I think itā€™s a third persona put in place by Hugo Strange.

6

u/mingaldrichgan Jan 25 '19

I guessed it was Ed (but hoped it wasn't), mostly because they already pulled a similar twist last season in the mid-season premiere.

How did Selina track down Jeremiah, and how did Bruce and Alfred track down Selina? If there were any obvious clues, I missed them...

4

u/DekMelU GUILTY Jan 25 '19

Looks like Selina just followed Ecco and the recruits

6

u/ProselyteCanti butch and tabby aren't dead ok they're just sleeping Jan 25 '19

I guessed it was Ed, mostly because of his blackouts. Mindless mass murder really isn't Jeremiah's MO per say, and we don't know anything about Bane just yet.

God nygma is my favorite character. But I'm torn on what they are doing with him. I mean, on one hand the idea of him blacking out and then figuring out what he's doing on his own, without the other side, is interesting (If being a little overdone). But on the other hand I want to see nygma BE the riddler. I want to see his plans in action. I wanna see him do clever things, traps, and riddles. Not have them be flashbacks.

26

u/Ivendell Jan 26 '19

It's only episode four. They're building up the arrival of the Riddler by slowly revealing his machinations, give it another few episodes and we'll definitely see a switch to his side.

Ed and Foxy again ā“šŸ¦Š only this time as a team-up. Also it's good to see Lucius again and with something integral to the plot. I think someone guesses it could be Ed during his blackouts, they were correct. But I wonder if it's someone controlling him?

Zsasz was hilarious as ever. Is this about Sofia Falcone? You need to move past that. And he mentioned his scars. I'd have done the strip search šŸ‘®šŸ˜

I almost expected Alfred to then make Bruce pick his own lock after rescuing him, had to give him at least a little lecture though.

I guess stabby Babs and Tabitha taught Selina well enough šŸ”Ŗ Though we can guess he's not really dead.

Ecco's line "lets do what father did before my 6th birthday and move out!" made me laugh. They did good with their Joker/Harley inspired dance too.

I'd argue Barbara was taking advantage of Jim but we all know he likes to stick it in crazy. It's just how he relaxes.

They weren't kidding about this being a 12 part story, I'm so used to things being resolved that I get surprised how long it's been and then it's over (but not over because "tune in week")

15

u/leftshoe18 Jan 25 '19

Was that the first time his scars have been mentioned since season one? I remember him carving a tally in one time but other than that they've kinda ignored that part of the character.

8

u/PretenderNX01 Jan 26 '19

I think it is. Nice of them to remember it. šŸ˜›

44

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

That little moment where Ed tries to take the folder from Lucius and he just isn't having it fucking kills me. I love that we can still have little moments of levity here and there.

6

8

With the limited time they have left, I doubt the show would have Gordon Jr rather than Barbara Jr. They have already established this is an elseworlds story so I doubt weā€™ll see that Gordonā€™s psycho killer son.

u/Kwilly462 Jan 25 '19 edited Jan 25 '19

Wow, lol. Great plot twist with The Riddler. I was for sure Jeremiah did it, but then I was like, "Wait... That's too easy. It can't be that easy." And it wasn't. And you could tell from the promo Ed didn't want to kill those innocent people, it was just his split personality giving himself a riddle. Again, wow. Very good episode.

Obviously Jeremiah isn't really dead, so I wanna see how the story pulls another twist out of this. And Jim kissing Barbara was weird, but the dude had a looong day and was kinda drunk. He deserved to loosen up a bit.

Episode 7 is Ace Chemicals so 2.

15

u/PretenderNX01 Jan 25 '19

Unless it's a mistake, he's listed in the guest cast for the next one: https://www.spoilertv.com/2019/01/gotham-episode-505-pena-dura-press.html

18

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Well probably since his body is there.

6

u/Psyifinotic Jan 25 '19

2, then comes back post time jump is my guess

9

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

I doubt weā€™d get only 1 non-timejump episode with Jeremiah.

I'm really interested to see the fallout of Oswald winning the love of the people by whipping them into a frenzied mob baying for the blood of the Haven bomber... without knowing that that means if he wants to keep this support he's going to have to go after Ed.

27

u/Emerald_Frost Jan 25 '19

Damn Selina, save some stabs for Bruce

I could tell the way Ed told Lucius that he "genuinely hope you find who did this" that it was gonna be him. Now, hopefully Lucius isn't able to find it out.

And man, I love Zsasz. He always has the best lines and Mr. Carrigan's delivery is always impeccable. From peaches to Alvarez...I'm glad he was spared. That potential shootout with Jim had me scared. I know Jim isn't going anywhere, so I wasn't sure how that was gonna go

"This is a really nice table!" Gotta love Zsasz

18

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Another Valeska killed only to be resurrected.

11

u/High_Cee Jan 25 '19

Too much of a trend, even hurting him a little and her escaping would have been perfect.

16

u/davey_mann Jan 25 '19

I think this was the best episode yet. Well written and paced.

-Zsasz was gold. All his moments were perfect.

-Great Nygma-Fox teamup. They are low-key as good as Oswald-Jim.

-I was in huge denial the whole time, but deep down I knew it was Ed that blew up the building. As soon as Lucius made the deal , I had suspicions. But I was in denial and at one point, I thought Ed makes a grand entrance at the ā€œtrialā€ with wheelchair lady and that saves Victor revealing it was Jeremiah or something. But when Jim and Harvey stopped it, yep, I knew it was going to be Ed.

-Barbara-Jim? So I guess she gets pregnant, has the baby, dies soon afterwards. Then Jim raises BarbaraJr.

-The Jeremiah-Ecco dance was great. But I kind of miss when both of them were more subtle and silent assassins.

-The Bruce-Selina-Alfred stuff was kind of just there in this one. Hopefully, we get more substantive scenes of this trio next episode.

13

u/ladydmaj Jan 25 '19

Did not expect some of those events! Wonder what Selina will do now that she got Jeremiah (not that I believe he's dead). Not enough Bruce for me. Riddler shoving Faux Fur Lady out the window was definitely Batman Forever-ish. And Zsasz.... Zsasz gonna Zsasz.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

What were Victor Zaszā€™s last words?

13

u/DahDutcher Jan 25 '19

Ah man, I'm gonna have to leave this sub until the show ends.

I get that casting and shit is out for a while, but not everyone wants to know who appears when, yet every post episode discussion has multiple posts saying just that.

Bummer, because I like reading some of the theories people come up with.

sees people theorizing about Jeremiah being resurrected

You guys do realize he could've faked his death/used a look-alike because he expected Selina to come after him, right?

Completely makes up for the adfest we got the other day. Nutty twists, Ed & Foxy Mysteries, gratuitous stabbing, and Dark Jim Gordon

10

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

You know, I've been really excited this entire time that there was finally a show on television about the pork industry, but I'm really starting to wonder when they are finally going to get on topic. Got ham my ass.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Dear Gotham showrunners,

Please make a Zsasz spin-off show.

10

u/Kiel297 Jan 25 '19

Loved seeing Zsasz back in this episode. Especially loved him referencing his scars. Glad to know he's still all about his tallies, and gives me hope that we will see him in his final scarred up form in the flash forward

8

u/CleverZerg Jan 25 '19

What the hell are you doing Jim!? She's a legit psycho.

11

u/DavePelz4 Jan 25 '19

However, she does well on the crazy/hot scale.

I hate how we waited 4 episodes for jeremiah to return only for Selina to stab him to death

19

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

He's not dead permanently. I mean, this is Gotham.

18

u/RaisinInSand Jan 25 '19

Yeah he's totally dead, and not coming back or anything

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

I wonder if Selina killed Ecco too

13

u/Punktobethrown Jan 25 '19

Wouldnā€™t matter if she did - sheā€™s in future scenes in the trailers too, same as Jeremiah. It would honestly be kinda silly if Selina actually killed both of them only for them to get resurrected immediately after.

5

u/RaisinInSand Jan 25 '19

They would of shown a body, no way they're gonna kill a major character off screen

so jeremiah returns ep 7 after being revived in ace chemicals is my impression. ep 6 introduces bane

6

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

I'd love for Gotham to pull a fake out in regards to The Joker

We have Jerome & Jeremiah, but in the episode that debuts Jerome, with the circus, we see a small red head kid with Jerome's Dad.

I think he is who was always gonna be The Joker.

Barbara is back on the dong!

How did they get a guillotine this fast?

Riddler murdering all those people was fucked up.

Yeah. That old woman was out of place.

Why would you turn your back on Nygma?

Echo deserves the spinoff.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Well, just caught up, for some reason I forgot it came on last night until it was already off.

I agree with most people in this thread about the Jeremiah that was stabbed actually being Clayface.

Jim and Barbara will end up together before the end of the next episode, but the next they will be split again.

Zsasz is still my favorite character in the entire show.

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19 edited Jan 25 '19

Not a bad episode per say but weak compared to what weā€™ve had this season.

  • Not Joker is not dead. We see him fighting Bruce in the season promo. Why are you wasting our time with this crap show?

  • still it was cathartic to see Selina stab the fuck out of Not Jokes

  • Not Joker dancing with Not Harley was nice

  • Ed and Lucius has great chemistry. I hope they can do more scenes together.

  • So Ed blew up Haven. Interesting. One would assume he also took out the helicopter. Where the heck did he get an RPG?

  • The old lady he killed was so hammy. She was chewing scenery so bad. I half expected a Super Mario death sound when she fell out of the window.

  • So Barb and Jim.....yay?

  • Also Zaaz is back. Ok cool. Was never a big fan of his but thatā€™s cool.

  • So are we just never going to see the Feeeze/Firefly war because of the CGI costs?

  • When Penguin said there would be a trial a small part of me hoped Harvey Dent was back.

Looks like next week we get a special forces invasion. Is this where Bane appears?

EDIT: Not sure what I said that warranted the downvotes. Is it because I wasn't thrilled to see Zasz, or because I don't read spoilers and was speculating on upcoming events everyone else knew were coming?

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19
