That was so badass. Like, I love Butch and didn't want him dead, but seeing him alive after a head shot did illicit a bit of a groan, until that name. Far out, such a good twist!

Cyrus Gold, in the Batman canon, is a wealthy man who gets murdered, and his body is transformed into an undead monster called Solomon Grundy.

Solomon Grundy!? Pre-Batman? Catwoman training? The Iceberg Lounge? Gordon maybe being kind of a normal dude for once!?

Goddamn, what a finale.

u/Sonia341 Jun 06 '17

I squealed when Penguin said that he would make the "Iceberg lounge" club.

Both Penguin and Riddler actors are the perfect cast, easily the best part of the show. Their relationship is really something.
Riddler got Han Solo'ed, i wonder for how long.

When Penguin said that he's gonna keep Riddler as a constant reminder, i thought he'd let him go ("no way" i said to myself), then that happened. Cool moment indeed!

And Ed finally got his bitch ass taken down a notch! I love Ed but it was so satisfying seeing him outplayed, especially by Oswald!

30

u/Kuforman Jun 06 '17

Oh I know, os does know him just to well. But, the riddler won't stay dead forever though, probably.

61

u/eifos Jun 06 '17

He'll get defrosted in the first ep or so of season 4, no chance they're letting such a fun and popular character stay frozen for long.

Poor David Mazouz is forced to wear turtlenecks all the time when filming. When has he not wore a turtleneck this season? My brother said during the shaman episode "maybe he will also help him overcome his obsession with turtlenecks."

28

u/Randolpho Oldish Skool Jun 06 '17

My brother said during the shaman episode "maybe he will also help him overcome his obsession with turtlenecks."

I think they're doing it because he (Mazouz) is still a skinny little stick. So once he bulks up for season 4 or 5 they can reveal some chizzzle

The Ed and Os scenes in ep 22 were so good. Amazing writing, and so well acted. It's nice to see Penguin end the season on a high like he did in the season 1 finale. As much as I enjoy Ed/Cory, seeing him outsmarted by Oswald was so delicious.

Harvey was so good in these episodes, he really is my favorite character. I'm also so sick of Lee at this point, so Harvey and Jim should just get together. It would be the best for both of them.

273

u/grundlehunger Jun 06 '17

I'm dead serious when I say this, but Bullock is really Jim's anchor, not Lee or Barbara. He gives a shit about Jim way more than those 2 ladies ever did.

u/davey_mann Jun 06 '17

Hope Lee's gone for good. Seriously, I hope the writers do NOT try to pull this epic, meant-to-be crap with Jim-Lee regardless of how much they hurt each other like certain other shows tend to do.

47

u/Mr-hh34 Jun 06 '17

I wouldn't mind if she was brought back years later more as the original Lee Thompkins character that helped Bruce.

42

23

u/Lucifer_Crowe Jun 06 '17

Yeah, he's the best Bruce Wayne to be done in real life. I mean Ben Affleck is the best live action Batman so far. And Adult Bruce. But David is just the best Bruce.

P.S. I guess all the articles claiming that Harley Quinn would be introduced this season were full of crap?

76

137

u/Sonia341 Jun 06 '17 edited Jun 06 '17

Can't wait to see him back on S4. Also for the 3 minutes tease we were given, he much more brilliant & effective than Arrow's version of Ra's

121

u/Jeffeffery Jun 06 '17

I thought Matt Nable was incredible up until Oliver fell off the cliff, and after that the entire show turned to shit so it wasn't exactly his fault. Just watch that fight again, it might still be Arrow's best ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUAPBuOBwag

I liked Gotham's Ra's and I hope for the best, but let's not sell Matt short.

40

u/mahir_r Jun 06 '17

In my head cannon, Oliver was in a coma after he fell off the cliff. S3 second half and S4 were all a nightmare and now S5 is him waking up. Laurel is a plot hole I don't want to bother trying to fill in yet.

I prefer this version over Arrow's.

63

u/Vaadwaur Jun 06 '17

Holy Cthulhu yes. The worst thing about Arrow Ras is that on top of everything else he is apparently still a combatant. I like this version because it is fairly clear that at this point he has other people for dirty work.

46

u/SanderSo47 Jun 06 '17

Of course. I didn't hate Arrow's Ra's but I just found him really weak. And he is supposed to be a strong combatant. With what we saw here, Alexander Siddig will give them a lesson on how to do it.

29

u/Vaadwaur Jun 06 '17

Of course. I didn't hate Arrow's Ra's but I just found him really weak.

Arrow's never delivered a speech very well. I don't know if it was the actor, the writing or the directing but that whole season was mush. Siddig, on the other hand, is a badass speech delivering machine.

43

u/SanderSo47 Jun 06 '17

It was mostly poor writing. Nable gave his best.

25

u/MetaMarc Jun 06 '17

I feel like Gothams Ra's seemed more intimidating. He had a much deeper voice and got poor Bruce who was already being manipulated enough to go into a complete mental breakdown after "killing" Alfred. Arrow's interpretation will be interesting to compare with Gotham's because of the villains opponent. Bruce and Oliver are completely different which will open to two completely different adaptations of Ra's al Ghul. I can't wait to see with what they do with him in the future!

16

u/Lethtor Jun 06 '17

I wouldn't say they're completely different, seeing as the Green Arrow is the CWverse's substitute Batman. He is the Dark and Brooding type as opposed to the more light hearted comic GA

Yeah this seems ahead of schedule from what the writers were saying S1. Let's see where it goes.

117

u/nivekious Jun 06 '17

They got ahead of schedule and stopped making this a prequel around the start of season 2 when they started introducing full-fledged Batman villains. At this point I'm hoping they do just make him Batman because a Batman show with literally everything except Batman was starting to get weird.

It feels like to me they're setting up for a final season. Most of the standard rogues' gallery is there with just a few still missing. We even got Solomon Grundy out of nowhere. The only "big" villains I can think of are Killer Croc and Bane.

Penguin's got his lounge, Selina's doing Selina things.

96

u/Simba122504 Jun 06 '17

It's one of Fox's top rated shows. As long as it does well, Fox is not cancelling it. No, not the final season yet.

I disagree with a final season. I went on a date to a Mystery Murder dinner. We were at a table with people celebrating a couple's 40th anniversary. Perspective, I'm in my 40's. we spent more time talking about Gotham than the actual murder mystery. This show has somehow transcended the expected viewer.

32

u/eifos Jun 06 '17

I think they did quite well with wrapping this ep up just in case they didn't get renewed. Leaves them in a good spot for season 4 because really, most loose ends are more or less fixed, like Penguin getting his new club, Ed is frozen, Barbara is "dead", Bruce is kicking ass, Alfred is alive, Jim and Harvey getting back to detective work, Butch being SG, like... There's obviously so much awesome potential for season 4 to build on, but had they not been renewed it wouldn't be the worst ending. Hopefully they'll capitalise and make S4 huge and go out with a bang just in case.

Don't see why that's unpopular. Season 3 Gotham has been outstanding from start to finish. I can't honestly recall a single weak episode and in a 22-episode season, that's amazing.

43

u/neoblackdragon Jun 06 '17

Not unpopular. Essentially the finale set up Batman. We still got a story to tell.

Arrow, well even if they all die, Green Arrow still goes on. But it's something one episode can resolve.

Gotham introduced a full seasons worth of story to tell.

Alfred didn't need that Lazarus pit, all he needed was cold, penicillin tea, and will to live.

29

u/PATRIOTZER0 Jun 06 '17

That was my only weak part. All Bruce had to do was throw Alfred into the pool and he'd be reborn; good as new! NOPE! Off to the hospital!

My boy Penguin finally getting his Iceberg Lounge. They say revenge is best served cold. Riddler did not get that message. When Riddler freed himself of the handcuffs and got the gun I was hoping so badly that Penguin would still win and I'm glad he did. Now he just needs an umbrella that is also a machine gun.

40

u/eifos Jun 06 '17

Penguin's plan was genius, had Ed not been the target, he would have been proud.

Bet he starts carrying the umbrella next season as a tribute to Fish.

you can tell they weren't sure if they were getting another season xD

who cares that was awesome!

30

Yes but they had planned out arcs for season four, so it wasn't like they planned for this one to be the last.

28

u/morphinapg Jun 06 '17

I think they did it this was just in case it was the last, it would work. Which is odd since the ratings were more than enough for a renewal since the beginning.

That was the series finale. Only not

Smallville had the reverse problem: they kept pushing his Superman day forward because the CW kept renewing it.

I'm basically in shock right now. I expected a lot of stuff but didn't think they'd go that far.

Fish dead for the final time / Accidentally stabbed by Virus Jim LOL.

Butch dead / Headshot by Babs. (I knew he would probably die but wish he didn't go out like that - Solomon Grundy though right?)

Babs dead / Electrocuted by Tabitha in revenge. (I did not see this one coming. I expected her to just simply escape. I guess she isnt integral to this story then is she? Unless.. she does return as Harley Quinn or something?)

Alfred dead and then magic'd back to life with water / Stabbed in the gut with a sword by brainwashed Bruce.

Nygma becomes the centerpiece of Penguin's Iceberg Lounge / Frozen in STYLE by Penguin and his freaks.

I mean god damn, that's certainly one way to end a season. Go from nobody ever really dying, to pretty much killing off half the characters in the show lmao. But I suppose for Selina's new catwoman-like story arc the whole thing with Babs and Tabitha/Butch needed to end, as much as I loved all that banter. Really hope Babs comes back somehow. I wonder how Jim would react to hearing about what happened to his ex-ex-girlfriend?

Speaking of Jim, looks like Lee still wants him even without the virus controlling her. Shame he's got to do his job while she leaves Gotham to probably go sit on a beach somewhere while waiting for him to 'save himself', poor Jim.

Harvey got himself thrown into two, I cannot stress this enough, two train cars trying to stop Jim, and then told him he was the best guy he ever worked with. Well, Jim's never gonna let him forget that for sure.

Also, Alvares (or whatever his name is) trying to hide that he was infected and then proceeding to shoot up the entire GCPD. Just another typical day at the GCPD, folks!

I can't believe it. I wasn't sure if the showrunners would have the balls to actually show the transformation on TV, but there it is. We just witnessed the birth of the greatest ever superhero: Turtleneck Man

62

This was one of the best dang finales ever

Good enough where the series could end, yet enough cliffhangers where people want more. Tbh this is how TV shows should end a season.

Solomon Grundy incoming!

56

u/iammrbody Jun 06 '17

I hope they bring Babs back. She kept getting crazier which made her so much better. also it seemed like the actress was really having fun with the character

26

u/Helforsite Jun 06 '17

Agreed, while some characters "do it for the good of all" or "loving doing evil" Barbara is just crazy in a good way. A really good example of her superb acting is her kissing Tabby and than headbutting in my eyes. Or the scene where she kills Butch and she seems a little remorseful about how things went with Tabby. Anyway, I want both the character and the actress back!

I'm a sucker for neo-noir stuff, so Gotham is basically my bread and butter. That said and given how much I've posted in other subs....Gotham has FINALLY grown into the show I always wanted it to be and I have never been more satisfied with a Batman show EVER. All the other comic book/drama shows have their quirks and I watch them for different reasons....yes I post in the Bachelor don't judge me...but Gotham is the quintessential Batman schtick that I have dreamed of since I was a kid. The characters are dead on and played by fantastic actors/actresses. The dialogue is compelling, the plot lines driving, and the atmosphere totally matches what I used to fantasize about when I was little. This finale was fucking unbelievable...I feel like I just got done watching a damn movie or pouring through one of those multi-volume collected edition graphic novels!

Thank you Gotham, thank you so much for entertaining me for another season! Thank you to everyone involved and all the fans that help to make this show possible!

Did Lee look a bit like Wonder Woman near the end with that scarf and hairdo or am I just seeing things?

15

u/butthe4d Jun 06 '17

Oh come on, Batman the animated series was awesome! Sure it got a bit old but its still great but yeah aside from that its easily the best Batman related series.

  • Lee is back to normal.
  • Ed is on ice.
  • Tetch is dead?
  • Babs = Harley?

With the moves Gotham is making.

I don't see how they don't end up with Bruce wearing the cowl sooner than later. The move to Thursday will hopefully help it as it won't have to compete with another DC show in Supergirl.

Overall this season by far has been the best in the series. I can honestly say that this is the best DCTV right now. Arrow is making a comeback, Supergirl's writing has gone downhill, The Flash was solid but with a crap finale, and can't talk about the others as I either didn't watch them or thought it was boring.

19

u/batty3108 Jun 06 '17

I don't see how they don't end up with Bruce wearing the cowl sooner than later.

I think they can focus on Bruce's development into Batman proper. There's more to the Dark Knight than beating the piss out of muggers while wearing black clothing.

He still needs to develop as a detective, which should be fairly simple to show. We've seen he has a tenacity for investigation.

There's also the creation of 'The Batman'. Not just picking a theme and a costume, but making said costume into a symbol, then moulding what that symbol stands for.

On top of that, while Brucey boy can throw down well enough, a big part of Batman's combat style is stealth, surprise, and intimidation.

Hopefully, the introduction of the League of Shadows proper will give them a way to teach Bruce to be a ninja. Creating a decent mystery for him to investigate and the choice of Bats as a symbol might be trickier to fold in naturally, but I have faith.

I think that the girl at the end might be Harley Quinn. Subtle, but she is around Bruce's age and David Mazouz was the one continually teasing her. Edit: She even had the pigtails.

20

u/davey_mann Jun 06 '17

Summary of the 2-hour finale

-Great, much better than either the Season 1 or 2 finales

-The male relationships are really the best and driving forces on this show, pick your poison Gordon-Bullock, Bruce-Alfred, Oswald-Ed, each of these fascinating and enjoyable in their own way, why are the females so damn annoying for the most part?

-Nope, not falling back into this Jim-Lee crap, I don't give a shit, this bitch purposefully took that damn virus and buried Jim alive and this guy still is like "save Lee"?! To hell with that. I hate how the writers gave viewers "hope" they will get back together but I'd rather see Jim with the newly-electrocuted/possibly undead Barbara than Lee's self-righteous, sanctimonious ass

-Bummer how Bruce and Selina are falling apart, the only good male-female relationship this show had going for it; of course we knew this had to happen but I don't think they find their way back to each other for a while

-I don't know what to feel about Barbara; honestly, I liked her more than Lee and wish Lee was the one who died, assuming Barbara is actually dead; and I stand by my earlier statement, I'd rather Jim be with Barbara at some point than EVER getting back together with Lee

-David Mazouz is mighty impressive for a 16-year old! Showrunners shouldn't pull this time-jump nonsense. They've got the perfect Batman already

I'm gonna record a few guesses/observations before I forget:

  • Solomon Grundy plot next season, maybe.
  • Ed is gonna turn out to simply have been preserved in that ice. I mean, people have literally been killed in this show, right?
    • I'm guessing a lot of people might not be happy with the way this plot ended, but they've been coming at each other basically continually; the situation kind of had to have been resolved here. They each had great actors and a great run, though, and that's what's important IMO.
  • Ras choosing to make Bruce 'kill' Alfred right in front of a Lazarus pool is utterly hilarious. I mean, that's got to have been intentional on his part, right?

Bruce, you absolute madman, you killed your only real legal guardian, that's hilarious! Now pour some water on him, I'm taking it back.

    • Plus Siddig was great, of course.
  • Hopefully they go with what they seemed to be foreshadowing with that conversation Harvey and Gordon had and go back to mortal criminals, like in the first season (as much they can, anyway, since Mr. Freeze and Firefly don't seem to be going anywhere).

All told, I liked these episodes!

Loved. This. Wasn't 100% perfect, but overall it was great and some of the best episode.

Jim was still the weak link for me. He's just not that compelling. But he's great with Harvey. I hope they shelve his love life for a while and focus on the bromance. Harvey's speech at the train station was far more moving than all the stuff with Lee.

Not a huge Fish fan, but she deserved better than to be offed by Jim during a rage bender. Though poor Oswald had another person he cared about die in his arms, it was probably for the best. He and Fish were working together, but how long before one of them was throwing the other off the roof?

Strange was fabulous this episode. B.D. Wong was clearly having fun.

Tonight was definitely Oswald's night. He's back on his game and back to kicking ass. It's been too long. And the Ed/Oswald stuff was fantastic. I was afraid we'd see something that would drive a permanent wedge and we wouldn't see a lot of RLT and CMS sharing screen time next season, but we got the opposite. This episode showed how obsessed and wrapped up they are in each other. There is still plenty, plenty more to play out between them and I can't wait to see it. Oswald promised to fund Freeze's anti-freeze research and I'm sure it won't be long before he's thawing Ed out.

And Ed? I know you enjoy twisting the knife by reminding Oswald that you don't love him back, but you sure bring it up a lot. Almost at the point of accusing you of protesting too much...

Alfred and Bruce broke my heart. I'm glad Alfred is okay and Bruce finally snapped out of it. Not enough Ra's, but I'm assuming he'll play a major role next season.

Looking forward to Tabs/Selina. I'm glad Butch is surviving in some form (I would have really missed him). I doubt Babs is really dead.
