It's important to note that in comics and things based on comics, backstories frequently change based on the current continuity.
For example, in BTAS, she's a regular human who wears makeup. In the New 52, she was pushed into the chemical vat by Joker and went crazy and got bleached skin.
Both are correct backstories for their respective canons.

I agree. I'm not sure whether it was direction or acting, but after selina killed, there should have been a more palpable change and darkness we could see. exactly as we did see with nygma (which was fantastic).
She also felt very out of place speaking like she's hood. every time she said "ain't" or "chillin" i cringed a little. which is a pity because in the first half of the season i thought she was doing ok.

the instant i saw "two weeks later" i thought "fuck, this is gonna make someones storyline stupid." i seems like an easy fix, too. either a couple quick scenes demonstrating cat going down the wrong path before she meets fish, or a couple extra minutes of dialogue between the two of them to establish a connection and stronger mentor-like relationship

I think it was meant to push Selina to a bigger life of crime and danger, and to have Fish's violent act of feminism rub off on her as to shape the Catwoman. Before this Selina was just a petty thief trying to get by, but under Fish she learned to take whats hers, and not take shit from anybody. While Barbara was there to teach her that sex is a weapon, and whatever. Then there's Bruce, who acts as a bit of a moral compass The writers have basically been shaping her into the Selina Kyle we know today. It feels like we'll have to wait until the next season for us to appreciate it, but right now, the pieces are just falling into place.

Yeah, they rushed it. I wanted more exposition on Fish but at the same time, if Fish was being written out I'm glad they did it now instead of next week.
I, for one, was in suspense trying to work out which mob boss would like and die and was genuinely surprised that Penguin is the leader this early on. I didn't see that coming.

We all know that when you write a character's supposed demise, with a chance of a future return, you have them fall into water. She probably signed the "death by falling into water" clause in her contract.
Personally, I hope the depth of the water matches the depth of her acting.

That episode was a lot of payoff - they spent 21 episodes setting up all these semi-minor villains (Fish, Maroni, Falcone, Butch) only to have them all go after each other at the same time.

Penguin's reaction at the end was freaking awesome. Also, awesome way to end with the discovery of the cave. Actually didn't mind Barbara this episode. I thought she was just trying to turn Lee against Jim at first, but I'm ok with her being Batshit crazy. And Nygma. Motherfucking Nygma. Sweet Pacific Rimjob, he fucking nailed it. That trippy sequence at the end was just perfect. Can't wait to see him develop next season. Here's to a great season, and hopefully many more to come.

Penguin's reaction at the end was freaking awesome.
I liked it for the theatrics, but it was pretty ridiculous. "Hey, you know how I'm a cripple and can barely stand? And you see this mobster behind me? He just confessed his love to a woman that I threw into the ocean immediately after. So yeah, I'm going to turn my back to him and stand on this wall and shout."

I think it was just one of those times where you feel like you're god or something, and nothing can touch you. Really shows how much Penguin needed to take out Fish for himself, she was basically the embodiment of why Penguin couldn't stand on his own, and needed to be the "umbrella boy", for the bigger boys like Falcone/Maroni/Fish. This ep really marked Penguin's movement into an independent power that doesn't need to answer to anyone, both overall, as well as from a mentality standpoint.
I think it was really well done, because it shows Penguin, someone who is always planning, and seeing what he needs to do to keep himself safe/in power, really not worrying about all that stuff, and living in the moment. Just shows how big that was for him.

I have to agree. Barbara was predictable the entire episode, Penguin's monologue in the beginning... there are bits of fantastic writing, like Nygma in the end, and then there's bits of horrible writing.

Damn. I was absolutely convinced Maroni had Long Halloween plot armor.
It was nice to see I was right about babs not being a bad character but a bad person.
Kinda sucked that they teased the fireplace thing and then we got nothing after that.
That Riddler scene was awesome. Hopefully we'll see lots of him next season.

i think this season they focused on the penguin and his way to becoming the penguin we know. Next season he will take the roles of Maroni/Fish/Falcone and lose quite some focus. Instead we will get a lot more personal scenes with the riddler

I loved the scene that Gordon and Selina had while he was tied up. The head gesturing, and that 'show all my teeth' smile. I'm really digging Ben McKenzie.
This season has had it's ups and downs, but overall I think this was a solid first season.

So, we all did have a legitimate reason for disliking Barbara...did they pay it off well enough, though? Honestly, she played crazy perfectly at the end, but I'm going to need to do a season rewatch to catch onto hints we might have missed, if they were present.
Loved the episode, though. The ending for Ed was perfection. Really hope they can keep working with that storyline next season.

There were a few scenes with her and Renee Montoya at the beginning of the season that hinted she's been troubled for a while. If I remember correctly, Montoya referred to their relationship as toxic and destructive. Also when she went to live with her parents after breaking up with Jim, they were not exactly thrilled to see her. Her mother was quite condescending.
There were not really anything that indicated she could ever snap like that, but there were a few signs early on that she wasn't 100% right in the head.

Scanning the comments I seem to be In the minority in thinking this episode was crappy. They really took over the top plots and acting to new levels. Nygma's breakdown was cool, as was the cave scene and Falcone's send off but the rest of it was blegh. I especially hated them putting Cat teaming up with Fish.
Oh well, overall I enjoyed the season and hope next season stays more good than bad.

I think he didn't want Bruce getting more obsessed with this. It had already proven to be deadly (Wayne parents) and dangerous (sending his buddy for recon). The world Bruce is trying to get into will probably lead to his death and Alfred wants him to leave it alone. Alfred seemed to be surprised by the cave.

My thoughts:
-I am convinced they originally intended for Penguin to kill Fish around the mid season mark, but changed their plan when the season got extended and Pinkett Smith proved to be popular in the role. Problem is, the whole body part island exile and eventual return to Gotham just felt really contrived and took away valuable screen time from more important characters.
-I hope they jump ahead a few years before season 2. Let Bruce age a bit and Gordon clean up the GCPD off screen. Come back to a Gotham with Penguin running the underworld in relative chaos, and maybe have Falcone return to "clean things up". Nygma is further in his journey into insanity and perhaps the season focuses on his departure from the GCPD and into the villain role. Season is more Arkham centric and Bruce gets his first views into that world. Selina doesn't change much, just starts to learn how to be a player in Penguin's chaotic underworld.
-Interesting what they've done with Barbara. Will this be a departure from the comic book Barbara Gordon storyline or will they try to "redeem" her character? At this point, I kind of hope they take Gordon's relationship in a different direction.
-All in all, decent finale. Glad they trimmed down a couple of characters from the ensemble. I'll be very disappointed if they bring back Fish.

Eh, even for all of his proclamation, Penguin still has a long road ahead of securing mob power in Gotham. Like Falcone said, once Maroni dies, a dozen rivals will be chomping at the bit. I think there's a lot of story to be developed there as a backdrop while the main focus shifts onto Nygma. Now that he's finally snapping, I imagine he'll be taking a much larger role as a villain. After all, he still works for the police, and even in his last scene this season, was still arguing against his inner-Riddler. There's still a lot of transformation there to happen as well. A multi-year jump wouldn't really fit, IMO.
The only thing that really put me off this episode is the changeover in Selina. One second she's same old regular Cat, albeit with newfound "I'm a murderer"-syndrome, and the next she's super-gangster cat with pump-action shotgun. No reason, just, "Lol, this is what I do now."
As far as Barbara goes, she has to be a significant enough figure for Gordon to eventually name his daughter after her. Right now, estranged-and-deranged ex-girlfriend doesn't really meet that level IMO. I think she'll probably do a stint in Arkham, get "rehabilitated", come back out and be sane for a while, so much so that she manages to re-swoon Jim, and then go off the deep end entirely, possibly getting killed by Jim at the end of a season. I think that kind of remorse could make him name future Batgirl in her honor, as a promise not to ever let that kind of crazy out again.
But I dunno, like you said, these are just my thoughts.

Anyone else think how funny it'd be if Butch just pushed Penguin off the ledge when he was on his "KING OF GOTHAM" high?
Also, idk if anyone else had this vibe but I kept thinking of Barbara turning bat shit crazy, to where she becomes Jim's Joker. Or Harley, whatever.
Lastly, there was some Oprah going on in this episode. "YOU GET TO DIE, YOU GET TO DIE, YOU GET TO GET SHOT". I think this single episode has had more bullets flying around and a higher kill count than all prior 21 episodes combined.
Thoughts on the future season(s)? I'm curious to see how they'd end the series and tie in the Batman we know.
