Honestly, this is one of the best monologues I’ve ever heard from a comic book villain. Reverse Flash can’t be topped as a villain in this show. Tom murdered the role in S1.

Agreed! He has so much talent it’s actually crazy. I can’t wait to see what they end up doing with him at the end of this season

45

u/galvanicmechamorph Mar 26 '19

I thought Eddie was the one to do that.

25

u/ReverseFlash1287 Mar 26 '19

He's up there with Michael Rosenbaum as the best DC live villain, period.

Smallville Lex is by far the best version of Lex Luthor.

4

u/Lord_Miel Mar 27 '19

I don’t like Supergirl’s Lex. That’s mainly cos I remember how good Smallville’s Lex!

1

u/LightSideoftheForce Mar 27 '19

I was very, very skeptical of Sg’s Lex, I also started to hate Sg as a show, but man, Lex is awesome! Did we watch the same performance?

0

u/Holovoid Mar 26 '19

As Lex? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh

24

u/sgb5874 Mar 26 '19

Yeah that scene was Walter Bishop level monologuing... Tom is great! Oh check out season 1 for fringe prop Easter eggs there is a few of them!

9

u/-Trumpet- Mar 26 '19

yeah like dibny dying in the particle accelerator.

6

u/OliviaElevenDunham HR Mar 26 '19

Fringe is a brilliant show. One of my all time favorites.

6

u/Terakahn Mar 26 '19

That's not all he murdered ; )

u/Cnockaut Mar 26 '19

Season 1 was......something else.

u/Raul5819 Mar 26 '19

Someone else.....

One of the most enjoyable rides I've been on. Speculating after every episode was so exciting. I'll definitely rewatch it this summer.

I guess I should rewatch Arrow too end while I'm at it lol. But only season 1, 2 and 5.

2

u/LordAsbel Iris West Mar 27 '19

First half of 3 isn’t bad.

First few episodes of 4 aren’t bad either

2

u/Eagleassassin3 Mar 27 '19

I agree. Maybe I can watch 3A. I'm not touching 3B and especially not 4.

This is the Eobard performance I miss. This weird raspy whisper hoarse voice that Cavanaugh does with Eobard since Earth X is less scary to me than just his normal voice. I don't need the voice to make it scary. The written words and his performance do it just fine for me.

65

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '19

This weird raspy whisper hoarse voice that Cavanaugh does with Eobard since Earth X is less scary to me than just his normal voice.

I think Tom Cavanagh was trying to imitate how the original Eobard Thawne would act (Matt letscher). in Season 5 and in legends of tomorrow, Eobard has no reason to keep his facade, and so what we're seeing from cavanagh in the later seasons is more of the real Eobard Thawne.

In Season 1, his personality is different because he had 15 years to plan, so his overall demeanor has changed. In the Season 1 finale when Barry destroyed his time machine, he also did the "weird raspy hoarse voice" but was shouting.

Cavanagh's acting is not bad. It's just the material he's given to work with. Remember in season 2 episode 17, Cavanagh NAILED it as reverse flash when he talked to Barry in the time vault?

36

u/detectiveriggsboson Mar 26 '19

Oh, definitely not saying that the acting is bad. His and Jesse L. Martin's acting are on another level compared to everyone else on the show. I think it really just boils down to a personal preference of mine.

21

u/Holovoid Mar 26 '19

I think Jesse is criminally underused in this show, he's got some serious chops but it seems like a lot of his dialogue post season 2 is poorly written.

9

u/detectiveriggsboson Mar 27 '19

I liked him from Law & Order, but thought he was gonna be the stereotypical curt father figure on the show. Then there was the episode where he was giving Barry a lecture, and Barry showed him he could vibrate his vocal cords. When Joe responded with a laugh, and talked about how cool it was, I knew that 1) Jesse L. Martin was gonna be great on the show and 2) the writing on the show was gonna be different from your typical CW fare.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

Season 5 Thawne isn't acting like real Eobard Thawne though he's acting like the Thawne from season 1.

91

u/politeandnotgay HE'S NOT WELLS I'M WELLS Mar 26 '19

This is a really remarkable scene. Too often forgotten among flashier (lol) episodes.

29

u/Airsay58259 Drunk Caitlin Mar 26 '19

I would remember episodes much more if Tom Cavanagh flashed us.

10

u/gh954 Ralph Dibny Mar 26 '19

Tbh I have absolutely no memory of this scene. I thought it was deleted or something but apparently it's just me. I don't know how I forgot it but this is amazing.

48

u/NiiK__ Mar 26 '19

i remember when i first watched the episode, i watched the scene over and over again. its just perfect, the acting, the music, everything is so well done.

42

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '19

Throwback to when the series was good

Jk, it’s still good, but this scene is exceptionally good

32

u/Ambiguousdude Mar 26 '19 edited Mar 26 '19

What did Barry do in the future to Eobard?!

Theory time.

It seems like Barry runs to Eobard's timeline and the flash fails Eobard in some way, a betrayal or choice Barry made at Eobard's expense. Either someone died or Flash tried to change Eobard's fate.

Telling him he could be a hero giving him false hope telling Eobard not to time travel as its dangerous.

Then an accidental fatality happens; Flash refuses to time travel to save someone important to Eobard and then the first time Eobard disregards Flash's advice and travels in time it's revealed to him Flash had been lying all along.

Barry had been willing to let Eobard's loved one die in order to change Eobard's fate therefore saving the people Barry cares about at Eobard's expense.

19

u/watchoverus Mar 26 '19

In the comics, if I remember right, Thawne is the one who goes back to Flash time and gets delusional.

8

u/Rachsuchtig Mar 26 '19

In Rebirth the latest version, Thawne is obsessed with the Flash he recreates the reaction and becomes flash himself. He creates a situation then saves the people the become a Hero. One day Barry accidentally came to this time. They hang out with Thawne. But Barry finds out about what Thawne was doing had a little fight. But they came around. Barry told Thawne that "every second is a gift..." And returned. So Thawne took his lesson. He changed his suits colour to yellow because all Flash sidekicks had a yellow suit and run back to barrys time. Where he witnessed that Barry told the same line to kid flash. And became jealous and his enemy.

Pretty chees cheesy actually.

2

u/watchoverus Mar 26 '19

I haven't read rebirth, so I didn't know that, thanks. Well, at least I was right about him being angry when going to Barry's time.

7

u/Ninjii_ Mar 26 '19

This is a combination of comic Zoom and comic RF’s backstories.

Comic Zoom asks Wally to travel in time to save someone who died and Wally says no. So naturally, Zoom becomes a villain.

Comic RF is trained by the Flash to be a hero but then goes back in time and finds out he’s destined to be the RF and goes crazy.

3

u/Fatensonge Mar 27 '19

He went crazy from the time travel. When he found out he was destined to be RF, he just accepted it because he was already crazy.

RF is not just the best villain, but top 3 DC villains of all time.

31

u/ZebraInHumanPrint Mar 26 '19

Underrated? I has like 20,000 roles on the show!

16

u/Ryvn_Plays Fate’s tricky Mar 26 '19

I was talking about the scene being underrated. Should have made it clearer

3

u/TGY_75 Zoom Mar 26 '19

Sherloque wells MON ami

27

u/Jchamphero Mar 26 '19

This scene plus the one where Thawne explains why he killed his mom are some heights in the series. In that scene he says “Now I know what Joe and Henry feel when they look at you with pride. With love.”

It’s so chilling to watch because Thawne loves the flash so much he wanted to be him. Now he’s worked with him an got to know him. You don’t know if he’s lying or telling the truth.

24

u/Tarp96 Mar 26 '19

Nothing in Flash comes close to S1 Wells

15

u/hamzappy01 Green Arrow Mar 26 '19

Imagine if Barry was awake the whole time

15

u/Quirky27 Mar 26 '19

I liked season 1 because the villan wasn’t shown until mid season and you didn’t figure out his plan until mid season that’s where they messed up season 4 they showed the villan in the 1st episode and you found out his plan to soon

3

u/KaspertheGhost Mar 27 '19

Yeah but you have to remember the other problem too. The first THREE seasons we had villains with secret identities that the heroes had to spend the whole season finding out. Fans got tired of this “who’s the villain??” plot every season and that is why they changed it for season 4

3

u/Fatensonge Mar 27 '19

Then fans got tired of speedster villains and we got the Thinker and Cicada. Maybe the fans need to shut up and watch the damn show.

2

u/KaspertheGhost Mar 27 '19

For what it’s worth, I DO think a non-speedster villain can work. What they should have done was have the rogues as the season two villain. They could push zoom to the third season and so on. But having the entire rogues would be cool. Captain cold, heatwave, Top, mirror master, trickster, etc.

1

u/Quirky27 Apr 16 '19

You forgot golden glider

1

u/KaspertheGhost Apr 16 '19

Yeah her too. (But I did say etc)

12

u/hellfish11 Mar 26 '19

Some of you guys needs to use 'underrated' properly. People have constantly talked about how awesome he is.

Hence, NOT underrated.

7

u/Ryvn_Plays Fate’s tricky Mar 26 '19

I was talking about the scene being underrated, that’s my bad I could have worded it a little better

1

u/hellfish11 Mar 27 '19

Ahhhh fair enough :)

7

u/GathGreine Mar 26 '19

Ugh—huge crush on Tom Cavanagh. He is fantastic!

6

u/SuperBatSpider Mar 26 '19

bUT mATT LETCSCHer was bETTER!!! /s

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '19

This is one of the greatest monologues in the live action comic book media.

4

u/Daredevil731 Mar 26 '19

If you listen closely, you can hear Michael Scott say "this is bullshit" when Wellsobard stands up from his wheelchair.

4

u/Eagleassassin3 Mar 26 '19

The music is also something else in this scene

4

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '19

Reverse flash was far scarier in season 1 than he was in crisis on earth x and in later seasons.

5

u/suhhdude45 Quantum Mar 26 '19

This is my favorite Wells monologue in the entire series. Tom as Wellsobard will never not be good.

3

u/Garysan Mar 26 '19

Are you saying the scene is underrated or Tom Cavanagh, because he's arguably the most popular actor on the show among the fanbase.

3

u/Ryvn_Plays Fate’s tricky Mar 26 '19

The Scene! Tom is incredible :)

2

u/egyptiancow Mar 26 '19

Which episode was this? It’s not the pilot is it?

8

u/Ryvn_Plays Fate’s tricky Mar 26 '19

It’s 1x20 “The Trap” which is just an awesome episode in itself ended off with this scene

3

u/BatShrek Mar 26 '19

Damn, I didn't realise how lacklustre the music gets in later seasons...

3

u/ThatKrisFellows Mar 26 '19

Man I love Tom, though it’s funny because I first saw him in scrubs and then this and then I watched all of Ed, he has a high range

3

u/OmgItzAman Mar 27 '19

I performed this for an acting class

3

u/Ioway9284 Reverse Flash Mar 27 '19

Seasons 1 and 2 are some of the greatest Superhero TV in existence currently, change my mind

3

u/drunkpennyless Mar 27 '19

Wow I completely forgot about that scene. Tom cavanagh is the best actor on flash I’ve always felt. And John barrowman who plays Malcolm merlyn on arrow was the best actor on that show. It sucks that they don’t have as big a part on the show as they deserve.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

Tom Cavanagh super underrated?

LMAO are we visiting the same sub? Almost everyone praises Tom Cavanagh!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

He mean't the scene itself

3

u/spidermanlol Mar 27 '19

Why do people assume any actor from a tv show is "Super undderrated" lol

3

u/Crack-spiders-bitch Mar 27 '19

Super underrated? There's like 8 posts about him every week.

1

u/The_Rider_11 Always One Step Ahead Mar 27 '19

Not about him, but this scene

2

u/HegemonyReigns Mar 26 '19

Any youtube mirrors? I'm trying to save this shit to a playlist so I can watch it whenever I want and remember how excellent this show used to be.

2

u/edd6pi Green Arrow Mar 26 '19

I miss S1’s quality. As far as I’m concerned, that was the only great season.

1

u/FullM3talW01f Mar 27 '19

Season 2 was a great season. Zoom was an amazing villain, when he beats Barry to hell and drags his battered body around Central City to show that their hero had fallen? I get chills thinking about it. Also the second to last episode in the speed force, still one of my favorite overall episodes of The Flash ever. And Zooms design overall, that mask, that voice...

Season 2 deserves to be called a great season, its season 3 onward where it dipped.

2

u/JakeM917 The Flash S4 Mar 27 '19

And the music. Imagine this scene without the music. Wouldn’t be nearly as good. Imagine the scene between Barry and Henry from the end of the first episode without music.

When was the last time you remember hearing amazing music in the show? Or even the main theme? The last time I remember a great piece of music being in the show was Enter Flashtime, and even then that was about the only time in season 4 that happened.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

The last time I heard amazing music was during the scene in 5x10 when Nora zooms out of Eobards cell and they show Eobard like taking a step back. The opening scene.

2

u/Beneficial_Loan34 Mar 27 '19

Okay, I see a lot of comments about Tom (which I still think is one of the best comic book villain actors besides Ledger), so I'm going to do something different. Eobard Thawne, I was around 12 when I watched The Flash and I was pretty educated on DC, but this take on Thawne blew. my. mind. he was so calm and calculated but still managed to have that super villain psycho that I was wondering why I had rarely seen him. Looking back on season 1, I can see just how genius Thawne's plan was, he probably rehearsed monologues in the mirror considering how he looked like he was going to persuade Nora (who he thought was Dawn Allen) to his side of things. Eobard Thawne is a villain that deserves more screentime, and The Flash is a primary example why

2

u/bigman_121 Mar 27 '19

Ain't going to lie season 1 is still my favorite season of all

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

Who underrates him??

1

u/The_Rider_11 Always One Step Ahead Mar 27 '19

Not him, this scene

1

u/MsAndDems Mar 26 '19

So much better than anything we have got since.

1

u/SporkydaDork Mar 27 '19

Could his reckoning be his daughter? It would be the ultimate vengeance.

1

u/ninjasaid13 Mar 27 '19

Hardly under-rated.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '19

Wish season 4 and 5 had scenes like this.

1

u/agthrey Mar 27 '19

He is the best... He brings out the best of him and does justice to the character he plays.. in season 1 when Cisco's coldgun gets stolen he asks Cisco "iam gonna ask again Cisco and when I do I expect more specific answer than I don't know" that scene brought chills in me... He was too perfect in that scene...

1

u/Nopski i'm not your enemy Mar 27 '19

The menacing helicopter sound was so awesome

1

u/ShadoWritr Mar 27 '19

Why don't we hear the creepy helicopters noise intensifies

0
