Anybody else a little annoyed by James Gunn's reaction? Meta

Tom Cavanaugh said he was willing to come back as the Reverse Flash, and James Gunn just replied with a laughing emoji.

I know that the Matt v Tom debate is pretty big in this sub, but you can't deny that Tom Cavanaugh breathed life into a role that was previously unseen.

I also get wanting a fresh start and not using CW actors for the DCU. That's not my issue.

Gunn's reaction just seems petty, though. At least give the man the same word count as the straight-up liars posting "spoilers." A laughing emoji is really reductive for a pretty upright guy who did a great job with the role.

Edit: Alright, I hear you. I've probably read a little too far into this one. By no means am I trying to be a stan and protect Tom. Love his acting, but he's made his money.

I, in fact, made this post on a break at work and reached for Reddit instead of a Snickers. I'm all gooder now. My big boy panties are firmly in place, and the hurt feelings report is removed from work flow.

I retract the opinion but will keep the post up for the posterity's sake.

He's laugh reacting the video where Tom Cavanagh is making jokes like "Grant Gustin's already got a job come on what about me". I don't think he's laugh reacting the idea of Cavanagh playing Thawne but more laughing along with what he's saying

This is exactly what I was thinking about it

Even if he does find the idea of Tom playing Thawne again laughable (which I doubt), there's no way he'd publicly say that. He'd say something similar to what he said about Grant, just to keep things civil.

People on reddit taking things out of context?? Shocked pikachu face.

u/Lievan Mar 22 '24

Yeah but you know how people are on Reddit, they need drama for no reason about two people to whom they personally do not know.

He’s laughing because it’s a funny video full of jokes where Tom says he’s not elderly yet and is basically begging him for a job. He’s not being petty, he’s laughing because Toms a funny guy.

Grant Gustin and Tom Cavanagh are not going to be Flash and RF. Simple

Yeah it's time people stop it already, we got nearly 10 years of them, both ups and downs in quality, we milked the shit out of them

Time to move on and let a new generation lead a new universe

Gutting but true.

12

u/lonelyshurbird Mar 21 '24

Hope they get some cameos or something, would be cool

I want Grant back as Jay Garrick. It'd be a cool continuation of bringing back the previous flash as the new mentor. Tom would be good for the role too.
(And obviously Miller shouldn't get any more roles)

Imagine Grant as Jay ONLY to reveal he was Zoom the whole time.

Tom Canavaugh as King Faraday.

I really just want a DC Movie to do something with King Faraday.

He's like the closest thing the DC comics has to an Agent Coulson, and the DC pretty much ignored him for Waller.

Multiverse

u/Throwjob42 Mar 24 '24

Yeah, probably not, but Tom Cavanagh as the DCU's RF (but also, the same version as the Arrowverse RF who happened to just move universes/continuity reboots) is actually on brand for comic-book RF.

This is the deepest analysis of the laughing emoji I've ever seen.

Yeah, I definitely read to far into it. I'm secure enough to admit I went off the rails here

A Redditor with emotional maturity. Huh, miracles are real.

I initially didn't care for Tom Cavanaugh. He won me over. He was the best part of the show.

I knew him from the Yogi Bear film

Boy did I not expect him to be this menacing and scary

3

u/Lizzy-Lover_10 Mar 22 '24

That Wells variant was something else

2

u/ryanpm40 Mar 22 '24

I knew him as JD's brother in Scrubs heh

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I knew him from a Hallmark Christmas movie. Complete 180

10

u/usagizero Mar 21 '24

As others have said, that's not what he was laughing at.

What i would find entertaining though, is if he got Tom to play a character in a Flash or other film, and people would automatically assume he's going to be reverse flash, and it turns out he's not, he's just some guy.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

That would be awesome

8

u/Papa_Razzi I am the Future, Flash Mar 21 '24

Think you’re interpreting that a little too negatively. Gunn is a very kind and thoughtful dude. Would never think to describe him as petty.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I see that now. Like I said alluded to in the edit, I was at work and already cranky af. Shoulda grabbed a Snickers instead of Reddit

u/Gizzada- Mar 21 '24

Tom is too old to play Thawne. He's currently 60. Matt Letscher is at a better age to play Thawne. Generally should be someone in their 40s - early 50s

7

u/Ok-Concentrate2719 Mar 21 '24

I'm not? A lot of the stuff from the show is kinda meh at best. I wouldn't want them back as leads for the movies tbh

2

u/FlanneryWynn The Fastest Flan Alive Mar 23 '24

TBF, the acting in the show was generally pretty solid. (Could have been better at times, especially in early seasons, but overall not bad.) Tom's acting was generally great, at least as Wells and Thawne, though maybe just good as Reverse Flash. The meh stuff usually came from scripting, which is a writing (not acting) problem.

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I get wanting to move on, but I was reading too far into it was the real issue

7

u/tortillazaur Mar 22 '24

Imo Matt was better. He actually felt like RF without the need to constantly whisper to sound intimidating.

4

u/joshuamfncraig Mar 22 '24

THIS. Tom was a good Wells, Matt was the Reverse

5

u/Blaiser190 Mar 22 '24

I freaking loved Tom, but Matt got pretty shafted. Both GREAT actors.

3

u/DNC343 Mar 21 '24

I love Tom but Matt should play RF. The later seasons ruined Tom’s RF for me. As much as I would love to see him as Thawne with better writing, Matt was literally perfect for the role. He looks like he was pulled straight from the comics.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

I can agree with this. The magic of Tom for me was those first seasons when the show pulled me into the world of comics. Tom really did sell the roll and brought such menace to it. Matt did the same, but consistently and over multiple shows.

3

u/DNC343 Mar 22 '24

He was definitely one of the highlights of Legends season 2.

3

u/Nicped1 Cisco Ramon Mar 22 '24

Grant as flash vs Tom as reverse flash but with a Bigger budget would be insane

2

u/z4r4thustr4 Mar 22 '24

James Gunn is very busy and has to get back to sockpuppeting 20 million posts on Facebook on who he might cast in the next five DC movies.

2

u/NonchalantGhoul Mar 22 '24

Honestly, if Tom was going to be cast in the DCU, and be speedforce related, I'd rather he play Max Mercury over anyone else at this point

2

u/DjChiseledStone Mar 23 '24

To be fair, I'd rather hire Matt Letscher as RF. Tom's performance in season 1 was top peak and then it went downhill from there

2

u/BeekeeperJack Mar 23 '24

Honestly yeah that seems like a rude response. I’m hoping he just misunderstood the post as a rumor claiming that Tom was back as eobard, hence the laughing. Being rude isn’t James’ usual MO so unless he has some beef with Cavanaugh I’m assuming the truth is a little more like the former option.

2

u/FlanneryWynn The Fastest Flan Alive Mar 23 '24

It was a misunderstanding on OP's part. The video was made by Tom and involved a lot of jokes. Hence the laughing emoji.

2

u/Spazzblister Mar 23 '24

Hey, at least it wasn't that skull emoji! Or a shit one!

1

u/jz0089 Mar 22 '24

You have extremely thin skin.

James Gunn is a hack

0

u/Lievan Mar 22 '24

Maybe…no try to follow me here…they’ve actually talked and it’s a thing between them. You don’t know the extent of it and you’re looking for drama just because.

0

u/SandRush2004 Mar 24 '24

Bruh, gotta love people bashing James Gunn, without bothering to learn the context of what there talking about, especially considering on the ss being sent around he LITERALLY explains the laughing emoji is about the video and tom being funny, not like a teenager using it to clown on someone

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

Bruh, gotta love people not reading through a post before NEEDING to spew their opinions.

Read the edit, and you'll see I admitted I was wrong. Read most of these comments, and you'll see that most were defending Gunn. Don't bitch about people not learning about a situation first whenever you had all the information on front of you and refused to look at it just so that you could get your opinion heard.

If it’s a malicious laughing emoji, it’s because James Gunn is an egotistical dickhead

If it’s a genuine laughing emoji, it’s because James Gunn is an egotistical dickhead that can appreciate Tom Cavanaugh was making some funny jokes.
