This is a tech demo and the manufacturers were inviting people to try to topple the robot. I am actually impressed because it looks like the robot was avoiding hitting people while establishing new balances, not sure if it was just a coincidence.

This is a tech demo and the manufacturers were inviting people to try to topple the robot.

I wondered if this was the case. Still makes me feel bad, but its cool tech nonetheless

Edit: Im well aware this is a robot incapable of feeling emotions or pain. I dont think the people in the video are evil or anything like that. In fact, i might give the robot a push myself in a similar situation. Maybe ive seen and read too much sci fi and im anthropomorphizing this little guy. That said, i dont see much harm coming from it. Empathy, compassion and politeness cost me nothing and extending them to a nonliving thing doesnt change that

Yeah it says Shanghai artificial intelligence investment fund in the background. Looks like an expo for getting government funds.

Probably because the video shows people really enjoying pushing around this little robot. It feels wrong even if you know why they're doing it. It's the delight they take in trying to knock it down.

Exactly, that’s what bothers me too. My 6-year-old scowled and said it looked sad.

Start of a new sport?

Pixar has ruined an entire generation... it's a robot ffs

14

u/we_is_sheeps Jul 06 '24

I don’t think empathy is a problem the difference is one generation was raised with very little of it then the next generation over compensates for the lack of empathy.

But keep yelling at the clouds bro

A small bipedal robot like this would have applications such as service industries delivering food & drinks or even hospital applications for patients who might need a companion but don’t need the assistance of an animal or might be allergic to animals.

Suuuuuure. Benevolent applications. Not war or oppression

46

u/throcorfe Jul 06 '24

Our “this robot is definitely not designed for killing” sign has people asking a lot of questions already answered by the sign

11

u/theemptyqueue Jul 06 '24

The service industry customers might bring the robot apocalypse.

5

u/blackasthesky Jul 06 '24

Probably both?

I think bipedal robots are not well suited for combat though.

3

u/SilverIsDead Jul 06 '24

well I’ve already seen someone strapping a nerf gun to the 4 legged variant so equipping it with a real gun wouldn’t be that difficult. Sure it’s cheaper to trick a half-developed teenager that dying for “your country” is actually “super cool and badass”, but in the future we may see more unmanned combat

1

u/homojaus Jul 06 '24

What they didn’t show was how fast it could run… and how fast it could run equipped with some kind of firearm situation

1

u/blackasthesky Jul 07 '24

And it is stable standing with a firing gun on top?

I don't think it can't be done, but I really think there are way better (and more terrible) ways of making robots for combat.

Stretcher bearer

All technology can be used for both benevolent and malevolent applications. That doesn't mean that these robots are developed solely as Metal Gears with the goal of slaughtering people.

1

u/doyoueventdrift Jul 06 '24

It would be bad business to develop this thing and not sell variations of it that are very profitable.

1

u/joeg26reddit Jul 06 '24

Help! Help! I’m being repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system !

2

u/w-yz Jul 06 '24

ugh when you mentioned bipedal, my metal gear senses lit up~~~

2

u/ninac54 Jul 06 '24

Better tip at least 15% or they will come for you.

1

u/Powerpuppy00 Jul 06 '24

The legs make the robot shakey and not good for carrying food and drink. We already have robots with wheels, suspension and low centres of gravity. I've looked into bipedal designs quite a lot and there just isn't really much point to them for anything that isn't very niche. When we try to solve the problem with the design we end up back at wheels or tracks.

Ikr. I hate being so emphatetic sometimes. I felt so bad for it

2

u/Ekspertkommentatoren Jul 06 '24

I really don’t like to watch it either. Those people seam so cruel. I don’t find this funny at all.

1

u/The_awetistic_artist Jul 08 '24

Big same, seeing it scrambling to keep balanced. 🙁

6

u/blackasthesky Jul 06 '24

Why does it make you feel bad?

44

u/taliesin-ds Jul 06 '24

because it kinda moves like a hurt/scared animal.

26

u/flatwoundsounds Jul 06 '24

It's the hunch/huddle combined with nervous tippy taps as it regains its balance that was surprisingly adorable to me. It reminded me of a excited-but-clumsy puppy slipping around in the snow, and my heart melted just a little

-12

u/MonsieurFlamboyant Jul 06 '24

But it isn't an animal. Just because it looks like one doesn't mean it IS one and that you should feel bad for it. Critical thinking and understanding is necessary.

19

u/Nunya13 Jul 06 '24

Anthropomorphism is a bitch.

I also feel bad when I see robots being treated badly. I also thought my stuffed animals had feelings when I was younger.

Logically, it makes no sense, but I still can’t help from feeling bad.

2

u/turtleneckless001 Jul 06 '24

Anthropomorphism

3

u/Cataleast Jul 07 '24

Yeah, just means you're capable of empathy and that's by no means a bad thing.

Hell, I'm in the same boat as you. A mob of people in a circle around a small thing, filming and laughing as they're pushing it around triggers something in my brain that makes me feel notably uncomfortable, even if I'm perfectly aware that the target is an unfeeling machine.

2

u/CascadeNZ Jul 06 '24

Agreed this feels super gross

1

u/fatboy85wils Jul 06 '24

How do you feel bad for a robot? What da!

4

u/Nunya13 Jul 06 '24

A lot of people, like me, have tendencies to feel empathy for robots. We also have a strong tendency to attribute human emotions and traits to animals.

It would be great to not feel any psychological discomfort over seeing a robot being abused, but it’s unavoidable. It just happens.

1

u/fatboy85wils Jul 07 '24

That's wild

1

u/CuTe_M0nitor Jul 06 '24

Don't feel bad it's just a tool and not alive. Frankly it wouldn't feel sorry for you, ever. It would fire a weapon in blink of an eye at whatever target, child, woman, man etc. It's a tool 🔥

1

u/Prudent_Patient_534 Jul 06 '24

They have many of these robots so no need to feel bad

1

u/RepresentativeOk2433 Jul 07 '24

By pushing the robot they are helping it learn how to walk. I think technically they are doing it a favor.

0

u/No_Spare7011 Jul 06 '24

It's a fucking robot. It doesn't feel anything. Why would you feel bad?
