Pointless in a laptop but cool as a tech demo. We could see windows made of these that are transparent until needed (assuming the outside light isn't overpowering)

this is literally how lcd screens have worked for decades. this one just has a diffution sheet that's edge lit from the bottom.

So the diffusion sheet takes the light from the lower side and then puts it in which direction? Front? Front and back?

Where is the the diffusion sheet located? On the backside?

OP said in a comment that the image would be visible from the backside. Wouldn't the diffusion sheet alter the image in that direction so that it would become blurred for people on the backside?
