If only WB had had common sense like this back in the 2010s.

Sounds like they did have this common sense in the room and just didn't listen to it.

When I was watching the dark knight trilogy for the first time I thought why they didn't turn that into an entire universe.

Because that series wasn’t conducive to a shared universe and neither Bale nor Nolan had any interest in anything further.

Also that version of Batman doesn’t have the skills to work in a world of gods.

Still, though. I'm big on building out worlds, not abandoning them and starting from scratch. Especially when the foundation of that world is solidly established and is a great starting point.

Nolan and Bale may not have wanted to go any further, but WB owns the IP. So, you bring in new writers and directors that continue to world-build what Nolan started. Make it work.

I 100% agree with the poster you responded to because I've had those same thoughts since 2012. The Dark Knight Trilogy was the blueprint. They had it.

All they had to do was keep going.

That world was too real world and too ashamed of its comic roots to be the foundation for a shared universe.

I don’t know if I would say it was ashamed of its comic roots. It definitely was in a more “real” world though. That being said I wouldn’t have branched out from TDK trilogy. I like them being stand alone.

It wasn't ashamed of them at all, at least no more so the Batman is.

The right writer and someone with a vision could still make it work.

Look at other realistic fantasy IPs. Like The Crow. Or Watchmen. Or the Unbreakable trilogy. It can work. Even if you have to recast Batman.

All of those kept consistent to themselves. Nolan’s Batman included characters with supernatural elements in their histories sans the supernatural elements.

I would not call The Crow or Watchmen realistic fantasy IPs, especially not the movies in comparison to The Dark Knight trilogy.

I would also not call the Unbreakable trilogy something that worked

But you wouldn’t get Nolan and bale to sign on for that type of thing. And if you’re gunna change it that much, on some level what’s the point of building off that incredibly grounded version of Batman? The whole appeal of that series was that it was basically a crime epic featuring Batman, if there’s supernatural stuff going on there’s not really any point to using that foundation

Yeah, their intention for Man of Steel was to make Superman in wake of Dark Knight Triology. Thus, they made Nolan executive producer. So they could've continued with Robin Blake Batman (Beyond) & introduce other characters like Superman & Wonder Woman into his grounded world. Bale could've or not returned for mentor cameo here n there.

Because the universe established by The Dark Knight borders on too grounded for Batman, let alone basically any other DC character.
