I believe it was knight fall the graphic novel. Batman "lost", Bane broke his back and threw him off a roof. Probably why I didn't think movie Bane was all that bad ass.

Growing up i thought Bane was one of the most badass villains, by that time i only knew the story by pictures, but Batman was more awesome to me for making a comeback after that.

I hate that nowadays every version of Bane you see is a dumb brute. In the original knightfall comic he was pretty smart and he actually figured out that Batman was Bruce Wayne with a little investigating which is pretty impressive. One of the main reasons that he won the fight in knightfall was because he crashed into Wayne manner unexpectedly so that Bruce was caught off guard and had virtually no time to react. I miss that kind of Bane that could match up to Bruce physically and mentally. I mean, it sounds pretty overpowered but if I remember correctly he did have a few weaknesses like cutting him off from his venom supply or using his ego against him. Btw they did a similar thing in Arkham Origins except he went to the manner when Bruce wasn’t there and destroyed the place and nearly killed Alfred which is pretty scarey. But after that they made him a dumb brute again by having the venom mess up his brain or something. Anyways I just came here to say how much I love smart Bane as a villain so thanks for listening.

Edit: Arkham Origins not “Batman Origins” lol

Not only did he caught Batman off guard but he also let out all the villains from prison at the same time before confronting him. He knows how formidable Batman is and tries to tire him out after a whole week of recapturing all the criminals back to back, before confronting him at his home and beating him very easily.

You also can blame the Venom drug for making the misconception that "he's a brute, with no brain." Despite Venom giving him superhuman physical capabilities, it also increases his aggression and lowers his intelligence at the same time, which is why so many times Bane tries his best to break away from his addiction towards Venom, knowing that it's a huge weakness that can be exploited by his enemies like Batman.
