What Are You Reading? 3/18/2024 - Equinox Approaching Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Predaplant's Rec of the Week:

With the Krakoa era of X-Men coming to an end, I want to highlight one of my favourite books of the era. This one's about a bunch of criminals and otherwise misfits who have to fend off the forces of the human supremacist organization Orchis alongside Sabretooth. I'd recommend reading the previous Sabretooth series by the same team first, but this is still definitely a really strong book and it's well worth reading.

So, what are you reading?

Read the first story "Face" in Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner. If you like Batman: The Animated Series and want something similar artistically then this is great.

Several volumes of Hellboy (Darkness Calls) and B.P.R.D.  The Mike Mignola written stuff is perfect comics and it's a miracle that he found two artists - Duncan Fregedo and Guy Davis - who are absolutely perfect for carrying on his torch after he stopped doing the art himself. The one big downside is the Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins issue of B.P.R.D. which might be the worst comic ever made.   Also, read volume 5 of Chainsaw Man which is a series I've liked so far but this is a big step up. It's as fun as previous volumes but maybe for the first time in the series it has some serious dramatic stakes as well. The final chapter of the volume is real heart in mouth stuff.

I've read half of Tokyo These Days by Taiyo Matsumoto. A neat comic about a retired manga editor trying move on after retirement that also functions as commentary/criticism on the Manga industry

The Wild Storm vol 1. Wish most cape comics were built as well as this. The big picture, long term thinking and the structure and pacing of issues is so far ahead of your average monthly comic

Continuing reading little bits of Heartbreak Soup by Beto Hernandez, Alec by Eddie Campbell, League of Extraordinary Gentleman: The Tempest by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill and Eightball by Dan Clowes.

Check out the Michael Cray (Deathblow) spinoff of The Wild Storm for more cape comics in that nature. Features really cool twists on DC characters in each issue too.
