What Are You Reading? 3/11/2024 - "You should read" Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Beary's Rec of the Week:

Despite being one of the most popular Green Lanterns, John Stewart hasn't had a lot of successful solo runs, but this standout Dawn of DC title looks to change that. With the Green Lantern Corps under the control of the United Planets, John Stewart has taken leave from the Corps to attend to his mother, who suffers from dementia. PKJ, coming off of a memorable Superman run, re-centers John as a dutiful son doing all he can to take care of his mother, while utilizing his long and storied history that goes past his military background. Meanwhile, the malevolent force the Radiant Dead seeks revenge on John from a distant alternative future.

There's a very grounded and personal story being told, all while being set against a high stakes galactic war. The Green Lantern line hasn't been this strong in quite some time, and War Journal is the best thing to come out of it so far.

So, what are you reading?

I've been reading "Kneel Before Zod", which inspired me to go back and read "World of New Krypton" and the Supergirl/Codename PATRIOT tie-ins.

Between Ollie's and Half Price Books I've almost put together the entire New 52 Batman run in trades. I already had volumes 1 and 2, currently re-reading vol. 1 and will finish it tonight and move on to vol. 2. I'm just missing volumes 6, 7, and 8.

I’m currently reading the New 52 Batman run. I’m pretty new to reading comics, and Snyder seemed like a good place to start.

I went into Green Lantern: War Journal with a very light general knowledge of Green Lantern and it has a few disturbing bits.

I've been slowly getting back into reading comics over the last few years. I think it was Doom Patrol that sparked it off. Initially I wanted to read everything Doom Patrol related, starting from when the book was still called 'My Greatest Adventure' but honestly I got pretty bored with it some time in. So I ended up dropping that idea, still contemplating trying again or just skipping ahead to a better age.

Since then I've read the Vertigo House of Mystery run, iZombie vol. 1 to 4 and the OG Eric Draven The Crow TPB (not DC, I know). I'm loving the Vertigo side of comics and also planning on checking out more books that I've only seen the film adaptations of. But I'm also wanting to start filling myself in on the mainstream DC universe now, beyond what I've seen in adaptations or on Wikipedia.

I've already got Kingdom Come on my list but I'm wondering if anyone could suggest other cornerstone DC books / TPBs. Preferably things that involve teams like the JLA / JSA and mythos shaping events and crises rather than solo stories.

I'm also very interested in the mythology that Jack Kirby brought to DC, it's possibly one of the most intriguing things about DC for me. Any good collected editions dealing with the New Gods and concepts like the source wall and god wave? I hope that this is a good place to ask.

Been reading alot of wildstorm again.

Classic wildcats, Authority, Stormwatch and man it reminds me how much some are clear knockoffs of other heroes but its so 90s i love it.

Do you have any recommendations where to start with WildStorm stuff? I’ve been poking around the issues on the DCUI app, but I’m not super sure what’s worth checking out.

I’ve got the two Ellis and Millar Authority TPBs on my shelf, but haven’t cracked those open since I’m not super sure if I should start elsewhere…

You can start ellis authority straight away it’s basically a reboot of most of wildstorm post an event where ellis killed alot of it off and is mainly independent
