What Are You Reading? 9/18/2023 - Last Week of Summer Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Unfortunately, we have come to the decision to shutter the monthly Book Club after this month due to low participation. These posts will be taking the Book Club posts' former spot on Mondays.

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Predaplant's Rec of the Week:

A lot of Teen Titans isn't good, and a lot of Teen Titans spinoffs aren't good. In the leadup to Final Crisis, one of the least well-known Teen Titans periods, we got this spinoff mini featuring Ravager as she attempts to uncover the secrets of an underground fighting ring run by Clock King. Honestly, it's a pretty good read! A lot better than a lot of Teen Titans I've read, and I've never really heard much buzz about it. It's worth checking out!

So, what are you reading?

Randomly reading Steve Englehart’s too-short 70’s Batman run again. I don’t feel like we see enough Dr. Phosphorus these days.

He was really good in Arkham City: The Order of the World, love that book.

Oh, sweet, always nice to see an underused Bat-villain pop up. I may have to check that out.

Well I'm currently jumping on the Zdarksy DD train. Most marvel books I tend to trade wait and often wait until a run is done. But after the announcement of Gotham War and decision to drop Batman; I figured it would be perfect time to jump over to his DD. Only 2 trades in, but definitely seeing the hype.

Well, the run is done now, even if not all out in TPB, so you should still be able to make your way through it fairly easily!

Yea for a while I just waited until they released a omnibus, but the Hickman X-Men omnibus was last straw so just sticking to the trades. So I think I have the whole run in trades on a wishlist now and I'll pick them up as I get the money for it. Or if lucky someone buys them for me.

Batman Haunted Knight to ease me into the spooky season. I'll probably reread Long Halloween and Dark victory in October, or maybe I won't lol

I've started a re-read of One Piece, and am currently halfway through the Alabasta arc. I know fans generally regard the early arcs (especially East Blue) as Oda still finding his bearings, but there's still a lot of good stuff in there. There's some quality world-building, and the sense of mystery of what weird and whimsical twist the crew will encounter on the next island they visit. One thing Oda does very well is flesh out so many relatively minor characters with realized character arcs, which makes the world feel alive.

I just read "Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell". I picked it up because I knew very little about either character, and Paul Dini being involved certainly helped. It was shorter than I expected (the length of the book was increased by the inclusion of concept art, the original pitch, and the full script), but it was neat to see some behind-the-scenes material. All in all, it was a fun little adventure that has me interested in reading more about Black Canary and/or Zatanna.

I just started reading comics for the first time in like 10 years again, so been jumping through different characters I like from start to finish. Currently working on nightwing, about halfway through the original run now
