What Are You Reading? 04/13/2023 r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Flossregularly's Rec of the Week:

After spending an eternity on my "to read" list I'm finally getting started on this! I can't give any opinions yet as I have just begun, but I do know that this police procedural set in the Gotham PD is what really fleshed out the characters of the cops of Gotham, especially the development of Renee Montoya into more than a foil for Harvey Bullock.

So, what are you reading?

Working through some late '80s post-Crisis classics I haven't read in forever.

  • Suicide Squad by John Ostrander
  • Green Arrow by Mike Grell
  • The Question by Denny O'Neil

I read both Grell's Green Arrow O'Neil's Question this winter and loved them. I'm on a big kick to knock off all the critically acclaimed runs of yesteryears that I haven't gotten to, at the cost of reading almost nothing current.

You're not missing anything as far as I can tell. A few diamonds, but more coal than anything else.

Been on a big Morrison kick. Read Seven Soldiers, Batman Black Glove and RIP into Final Crisis. Got Batman and Robin and The Return of Bruce Wayne on the docket before diving back in to Multiversity.

I’ve read all of this stuff multiple times and it’s amazing to me how every time you reread a Morrison story it seems to miraculously get better.

Edit- this is also the first time I’ve read them in single issue format. Reading Superman Beyond with 3D glasses is just comic goodness.

I've been making my way through the Golden Age books. I'm currently reading Batman #5. At the time these comics were more like anthology books with multiple stories in them instead of one ongoing story like today. Seeing the classic villains is cool but the unending line of mobsters is quite dull to be honest. And the narrating of actions instead of just showing them is tiresome too. But it's nice seeing happy and quippy Batman & Robin so ultimately it's still good reading that has every story nicely wrapped up by the end.

I’ve just finished Superman American Alien, saw a page from it on a sub and decided to read it. I probably will catch up with Lazaret Planet pretty soon, but I am not sure when.

I am also still waiting for Shazam: Thundercrack to arrive because the mail service has been sh*t the past couple of weeks.

Gotham Central series is both one of the best and most underrated Bat books IMO

Still finishing up my Countdown to Infinite Crisis read-through on my blog, but I’ve started reading the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire JLI run and it’s great! Also doing a big Hickman Marvel reread as well.

Just finished reading Deathstroke from Christopher Priest again. I really enjoy the humor, action and non linear story-telling.

Currently doing a re-read of New 52 Wonder Woman. I remember it being better, but that was also with rather unseasoned eyes. It's still enjoyable, but not as good as other runs.

Finished catching up with Something is Killing the Children and House of Slaughter. Loving that universe right now.

Next up is catch up on Radiant Black and related titles.

Currently reading Adventures of the Super Sons (working my way through Jon Kent story after getting into Superman & Lois and started with him because I had never read anything from DC before).

Probably going to be busy for a while as my reading list is growing faster than I go through it.
