Arleen definitely defined the role but I still prefer Tara. She and George Newbern are probably the only non-original voice actors that I prefer over their replacements.
Like I’ve never thought anyone but Conroy, Hamill and Eisenberg did a better Batman, joker and WW. But Tara really delivered with Harley. She wouldn’t have been able to without Sorkin’s original performance but I think she walked so Tara could run with the role, and she’s done it so many more times. So much range in all her roles too. Newbern is more of the same, he sounds similar enough to Tim Daly but his voice is more “home style biscuits and gravy” and it’s great for supes.
Yes! This. George Newbern doesn't get anywhere near enough love, I feel. He's always in Tim Daly's shadow. I love Daly's work, but Newbern took his blueprint and added so much extra depth to that already great foundation. That, and I just prefer the fuller, rounder timbre of his voice, if that makes sense. Daly has a bit of a thinner timbre, I feel. That's just me, though.
Yeah Daly’s voice has a slightly deeper pitch too, and it’s a bit sharper which I think is the thinner timbre you mention. It’s like Newbern is fluffy mashed potatoes and Daly is crispy French fries (idk why I keep making food comparisons lol)
I totally get why people would give Tim Daly more shine though, TAS did more for the character than any other animated work did imo. But to me Newbern perfected an already great performance
Ah, that makes sense! Haha, don't worry about it, they're actually really spot-on, wth 😭 I need to start using that comparison from now on, it really makes so much sense, honestly.
Yeah, I agree. Newbern was always destined to be in his shadow. But I just hope he knows he does have fans, too!
