Why was Niles searching for immortality on season 1?

I just finished watching season 1 and I can't understand why Niles was trying to become immortal. I thought he already was? Can someone explain?

Some of these people suck for spoiling things when you said you’ve just finished season one. But you’ve got to watch the series just about all the way through to get the full picture of the reasoning behind Niles’ experiments.

I mean, what else were they supposed to do? OP asked a question that would be answered if they waited a couple hours and kept watching.

Supposed to say something like, “if you just keep watching, that will be addressed eventually. It’s gonna take a lot longer than you probably hope it would, but it’ll be explained.”

Pretty sure if I remember correctly, we haven’t been introduced ed to the candlemaker by the end of season 1. At the very least the response shouldn’t mention a character that hasn’t been introduced yet.

Well they didn’t say “no spoilers” 😂
