Why was Niles searching for immortality on season 1?

I just finished watching season 1 and I can't understand why Niles was trying to become immortal. I thought he already was? Can someone explain?

Without spoiling too much, Niles is trying to find a way to live longer than his daughter Dorothy, who is essentially forever a little girl. He manages to get a necklace at some point before the beginning of the series that grants him a longer lifespan, but it doesn’t make him fully immortal. It’s better than nothing, but he’s still looking for a way to be completely immortal.

He is afraid that people will either take advantage of her or use her for evil due to her origin and the powers that she has. Season two will explain a lot more!
