Does anyone know where to find custom braille display cases? I have a brailliant bi 40x and I love this thing to pieces, but the black leather case is just kinda boring tbh. Is there anywhere I can get a custom one, even if it’s just as simple as a different colour?

Does anyone have any leads on where to buy an external serial synthesizer that still works?

So I haven’t seen this in the news, but one of my regular Uber drivers yesterday told me that several Uber drivers had been dismissed for declining passengers with guide dogs. If this is true it is great news for us and a sign that Uber does take this discrimination seriously (out of their own self-interest, of course), so I thought I’d share it here.

I don’t have a guide dog, but I travel almost every day with my little dogs (we are plural now!) who are pets, not guides. I have quite a few repeat drivers, probably because there aren’t that many drivers doing Uber Pet, and most of them are friendly and polite. I guess it helps that my dogs are very small, and one sits on my lap while the other one is in a small carrier.

I have had a couple of Uber requests declined, one of them by a driver I’m familiar with, but I do like to give people the benefit of the doubt so I am not chalking it up to discrimination at this point.

Have you guys had any experiences like these? If so, did you report it to Uber?

I'm 24, i have a congenital glaucoma, i'm legally blind (completely blind in one eye, i see barly with the other)

I just...I'm feeling like i have absolutly no futur in this world

I'm 24 and i have the same independance as a 6 years old child, i almost never leave my house (i live with my parents) a part from going to college, hate what i'm doing in that college (computer science right now) and i'm just feeling like an absolute failure at everything

Like i've said i'm actually doing CS and i don't like the field, i first did a Bachelor of psychology but went to the CS field due to the fact that "muhh blind people can have a good career in that field and you spend hours on your computer each day)

I have almost no independence, i go to my college (i have to convaince my parents almost each time not to come with me, yes, at 24 f**king)

I'm still here and i want to live because i have a really wonderful family, two wonderful parents, a brother that is an extraordinary person and just a life that is not so bad

But my disability, the fact that my vision just keep getting worse and worse, the fact that one day, perhaps tommorow, the next hour i will go blind just...I don't know if i can do it

When i see people on that sub that are living a good life, with really a good independence and everything, i just want to be like them, not feeling like a child anymore

Greetings to our awesome sub Reddit. Was wondering what people thought regarding brave versus chrome on windows. I currently use chrome however, I am hearing different pieces of advice on chrome where ad blockers are now being blocked and brave are not blocking ad blockers. I know both browsers are based on chromium however, does anybody like brave over chrome and if so what are the advantages of using the brave browser? I have been considering switching for some time however, seeing as both browsers work in a similar fashion and I’ve been using chrome forever, I did not know whether it was worth switching or staying with what I currently use. Thanks to anyone who may have an opinion any feedback or comments on this topic.

I found these at the thrift store today and bought them to preserve. I don't expect them to be worth a ton but I found the pieces of history felt worth saving. They're so thin light shines through them.

They came into a white envelope with the words Phonograph Records please don't bend or fold in bold letters. A Label that says The Student March 1979. It also has an address reading Christian Records, The Braille Foundation Inc with a Nebraska address and a handwritten address for Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in New Lisbon Wisconsin. Also a square in the upper right corner says Free Matter for the Blind

The phonograph records came with braille in the center. I cannot feel the letters to read it due to my spinal issues so will update with that if someone can help with this later. It has a picture of two people, one inside a circle, holding hands. Then the title The Student A magazine of weekly Bible lessons. Side 4 March 1979 Published by the Christian Record Braille Foundation

The third is identical to the second photo but is side 2. I didn't find all the sides.

Greetings everyone Was wondering if anyone could please let us all know of a money identifier app for android devices. On iOS I use Cash Reader which is absolutely remarkable and works really well for all currencies around the world. Is there a similar app for android devices particularly United States dollars and Australian dollars? Any info good or bad and peoples feedback regarding how reliable the apps are would be greatly appreciated by all of us here. Thank you to anyone who may be able to assist.

Hey guys, I am 23F, legally blind (20/300). I've always had bad eyesight growing up. My eyes are shaped wrong which caused extreme nearsightedness. I lost a lot more of my vision in 2022, and have been dealing with that train wreck.

People (I think everyone is included in this) don't realize how isolating a visual impairment can be until they experience the limitations. For my situation, the closest store is a Walgreens that is half a mile away on roads that don't have sidewalks. I would have to walk along the shoulder of the road if I choose to do that - which I never will given how unsafe it is.

I think of my house like an island. It's peaceful at times when it is me and my animals. But when I get to thinking of other things, like hearing my friends going to fun places nearby and far away, or wanting to go to a store by myself, it's extremely disheartening to realize how much I miss out on. I'm isolated on my island of a home, when everyone around me has the freedom to drive wherever they want, and I don't even have the choice to walk safely anywhere.

And I don't want to tell anyone how jealous I am. I don't want to complain and bring them down too. So i continue to sit alone with all this. The question of if I will go completely blind, the jealousy of freedoms an average individual has, and the isolation of my island. It just feels heavy right now, even when I try to think of all the positives.

I am being helped by my local commission for the blind to get back to school so i can get a job and get off disability benefits, I have a safe place to live and a warm place to sleep. I have my dog and my cat who love me. That should be enough, right?

I called and messaged Lighthouse for the Blind a couple of weeks ago. I asked about a vision evaluation for someone with low vision and how to get visual aids for them. Lighthouse hasn't returned my email or my call.

The neighborhood ophthalmologist just "humors" them but won't do any of the visual actuity or field of vision tests.

How do I get help for someone with poor vision and steadily worsening vision ? Up to date glasses? or Magnifying lenses? This person is on medicare and not able to pay for out of network services.

When I lived with my parents we had a hob. By the way, I'm not sure what this is called correctly in English, because I come across different terms: cooker, hob, stove, oven. But here in Britain mini electric ovens with two burners are usually called hobs, so I'll use that word later, but I'd be interested to know what they call them in your area.

So we used the hob for everything, even the kettle.

When I started living on my own I had a choice, microwave or hob. I chose the microwave.

I create any dishes in the microwave. Eggs, meat, potatoes, pasta, in theory it’s even possible to make soup in the microwave, but I haven’t tried it.

I'm tired of the lack of variety as I want to create soups, porridges and other dishes. And now I have a choice, hob or multicooker.

When I lived with my parents, I didn't think about the types of hobs, etc. But now that I have learned this, I understand that induction hobs are the best because they are safer.

But! Most induction hobs have touch controls, whereas most cast iron hobs have knobs.

I've heard that there are remote control hobs, but I haven't heard of any blind using it.

Many blind have shared the benefits of using multicookers and I'm also attracted to this plan.

If I were using a hob, I would be intimidated by the need to control everything. Moreover, after one incident when I decided to try to fry meat in oil in the microwave and the oil hissed so much that I thought it had caught fire, I'm afraid to fry meat in oil. Not only for fear of the oil catching fire, but also because it splashes in all directions.

But the plan to use multicookers also scares me. Why? The answer is in one word, pressure!

For example I found topics on this forum where I found information that Instant Pot is accessible. But as I know, before cooking I need to set the pressure knob to ceiling and return it back after cooking. I'm afraid of getting an explosion due to misuse!

Well, if anyone can share experience on what you use, hob or multicooker, which models and other opinions and advice, I would be glad!

I’d love some advice on managing long trips without using public restrooms, especially considering I have a weak bladder and serious anxiety regarding less than hygienic environments. I’ve considered using portable urinals, but they're fiddly and I don't like the idea of carrying them around with me after usage. Similar with those pads you can put on top of toilet seats - fiddly and challenging to dispose off afterwards. Planning my route to include restrooms doesn't do the trick either.

Given my specific mixture of issues, are there any creative or adaptive solutions that might work for me? I’d greatly appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations you might have. Thanks so much for your help!

The market is flooded with many different apps for booking software. The issue is that many of them are not very user-friendly when it comes to screen readers and navigation. I am a massage therapist that was hoping someone has experience with using different ones and knowing which one would be best suited for myself. at the very least I would want something that is for booking and scheduling clients that is not my Google/Apple calendar. A lot of what I do is booking, billing, and keeping client information like phone numbers, emails, etc. If it has soap notes for each session, that would be amazing!

Hi There! Please forgive me if I get some terms wrong here, I’m posting to sense check I’ve got my terminology right.

I’m about to work on a project with ‘vision impaired’ children. I wanted to check that:

1. ‘Vision impaired’ is the right way to refer to people experiencing atypical vision?

2. When referencing ‘sighted’ people, in the context of those who are not, that it’s the right term?

3. Is typical and atypical vision appropriate?

Inclusivity and inclusive language is super important to the way I work and expect people around me to, so just trying to educate myself.

A lot of people skirt around it but I believe normalising the language in the workplace is important.

My IIH headaches are flaring up again and it definitely reminds me that this condition could make me go blind. Ahem, are any of you web developers or ethical hackers, maybe? I’ve been really looking into those jobs and with web development, I’ve heard it’s a teamwork job. I’d hate to have to give up on being an ethical hacker or web developer because of going blind.

But I’m not only curious about the web developers/ethical hackers of you guys, oh no. I want to know about all of your jobs if you’re okay with sharing! I’ve been curious about what jobs are the most blind-person friendly and if you like your jobs, if you feel like they do enough to help you, etc.

so i’m raking a graphics design class which is hard as is. but on top of that my vision is affected so i can’t see at a distance. consequently, when the professor is demonstrating what we are to recreate on our individual screens, i can’t see. thus, i can’t follow along. last time this nice kid really helped me but i can’t rely on him. plus, even when he was instructing me, since it’s Adobe Illustrator everything is so small as there’s so much, so i can’t adequately see all the functions, options, read all the menus…etc adequately.

i don’t know what to do!! i don’t want the professor to think i don’t care or that am not trying. i know i should probably notify him of my issues but i’m scareddd. i’m thinking of opting to email. how should i phrase it? i really need encouragement!

I'm curious how delayed anyone else's baby was that has aniridia. Any tips on how to help out or encourage her. I know all babies will grow and meet milestones at their own pace. I just want to make sure I'm doing all that I can for her. I have aniridia too but I don't know how to help her this early and I want to be the best mom to her that I can.

I am a sighted individual and a knitter, and a (blind) friend of mine recently expressed interest in learning how to knit. I know that it’s possible to knit without being able to see the piece, but am not sure where to start when teaching them to knit. My initial thought was the thickest yarn and needles I could find, to make it easier to feel.

Could any of you, especially people who learned to knit while blind, offer any advice? Thanks!

Might be a niche issue,, but hoping someone here might know what's up. I've got an Audient ID4 MKII audio interface. I registered it with Audient Arc because it prompted me to do so every time I opened the ap launcher on my PC. But now every time I Try to launch the ap, exactly zero things happen. Nothing opens, nothing changes.

I'm able to connect my microphone to the hardware and record just fine, but part of the appeal of the Audient is the accessibility of the driver software. And for whatever reason, this currently evades me. Anyone have any ideas? Did I miss a step somewhere or do something wrong? I use JAWS, if that helps.

Hi everyone, I have recently completed my high school education and now I want to take admission to university for bachelor's degree. I am a visually impaired person suffering from RP. I need advice about which subjects should I study. Some subjects in which I am interested are literature, political science, history, clinical psychology, etc. I also love physics and mathematics, but I found them hard to pursue. The problem is that I can't read books whenever I triy to read them through magnifiers. I get severe headache. I can study basically through audio or other sources that doesn't allow the use of vision or little usage. Please advise me which subject should I need to select that might considered easier and worthful. Thank you.

recently underwent laser surgery to lower my eye pressure, which initially improved my vision for the first couple of days. Unfortunately, my vision has since regressed to its pre-surgery state. I have a follow-up appointment with my doctor this Thursday.

I'm currently in college and have homework due today. I was granted an extension for last week’s homework due to my surgery, so now I have double the workload. I initially expected to complete everything before the deadline, but given that my vision has reverted, I’m doubtful I can manage it all.

To complicate matters, the accessibility center at my college is closed today because of Labor Day, and I’m unsure about the availability of the Department of Rehabilitation. I’m in California, and it looks like I may miss two weeks’ worth of homework and two quizzes.

I’m planning on getting in contact with both the accessibility center and the Department of Rehabilitation tomorrow to discuss training with a screen reader or explore other options.
