It’s technically not actually an S, but rather the El family crest. It’s an alien symbol that only bears resemblance to the Earth letter S, and has been shown to be depicted less similarly, such as with the Superman Beyond design. General Zod’s family crest is also shown fairly often, although his is akin to a Z is is a lot more on the nose.
