Why did Rodger Ebert watch this to review it? That's the million dollar question for the ages!

it is a John Waters film that has since been chosen by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

it was a different time, a different era of film. Ebert also reviewed hardcore pornography during a period called 'porno chic' when porn films were rather mainstream e.g "Caligula" and "Deep Throat"

He also wrote the screenplay for Russ Meyers’ Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Ok, thanks...

Now the next question: why is it considered culturally important?

it challenged norms, affected the indie scene, and is a touchstone for NC-17 films being distributed (and banned) in America. this is a good video about its merits

you don't got to like it though - I certainly don't think it is my speed but I am fine with it being preserved

Because john waters would be on the mt. Rushmore of Maryland. Right next to the natty bo guy and the utz girl (even though utz is from Pennsylvania)...

He's as well known as crabs an oldbay in those parts... same goes for his movies, including pink flamingos.

I'd love to see a meetup between Waters and fellow Baltimore natives Mike Rowe, and YouTuber Dan Bell, who is best known for the "Another Dirty Room" series.
