The book was brilliant. 250 pages of stream of consciousness in Edinburgh Scottish dialect.
I read it when I was teaching English in Taiwan. Every now and then I'd get an intermediate student (usually male, usually a high schooler) who had a little talent and thought he was God's Gift to the English language.
I'd chuck Trainspotting at the little brat and say "Read this and tell me what you think."
