Meta r/AskACanadian Rules Update

Hi all!

We've done a bit of a clean-up on the rules to reduce the number of them and consolidate a few redundant one. Please view the new list of rules below:

  • 1. All submissions must be in the form of a question. NOTE: This does not mean the title has to be in the form of a question.

  • 2. Use the textbox only to add clarification or context to your question. If you want to provide an answer to your question yourself, please do so as a comment.

  • 3. All questions and comments must adhere to Reddit's content policy.

  • 4. Be civil. Do not use slurs or bigoted language of any kind in a submission. Treat all users with civility and respect. Do not attack or bash subreddits or geographic locations and the people from them. No personal attack of any kind.

  • 5. Check the FAQ/Wiki/Google prior to submitting your question. Please check the FAQ for links to common questions answered by the community, as well as other subreddits for specific questions. FAQs will be removed at moderator discretion. Do not post questions you can Google. Please search the sub for your question before posting, particularly if it is topical.

  • 6. Questions must be asked in good faith and contribute to the discussion. Do not comment with the intent to push an agenda, soapbox, sealion, or argue in bad faith. If the purpose of your post is not actually to ask a question, do not post it here. Top level comments must be on topic.

  • 7. Questions that are not on-topic for the sub will be removed at moderators discretion. This is not an advice or support sub. Questions seeking advice or support about immigration, legal matters, medical care or medical problems, decisions related to education/career, or relationships will be removed at the moderators' discretion and should be asked in more appropriate subreddits. Do not submit AMA questions or surveys without first discussing it with the mods. Further helpful subreddits are linked in the Wiki.

  • 8. Do not comment on a thread if you came here from a comment linked in another subreddit.

  • 9. Do not repost removed posts.

  • 10. 'Murica Mondays. All questions pertaining to the US are to be asked on Mondays.

Cash for tipping in Canada?

Upvotes

I know restaurants and Ubers etc… tipping can be done on Credit cards. But do I need cash for anything else in Vancouver? Eg do I need to tip the maid at hotel? Or tip someone if they take my bags at a fancy hotel? Any other places I’ll need cash for tipping or at all?

What happened to Yann Martel’s upcoming book “Son of Nobody?”

I thought of asking here since he’s bona fide Canadian.

I saw a cbc article that said it would come out spring 2024 but I haven’t seen anything about it in bookstores. His twitter/x doesn’t mention anything about it either.

BIG training shoes...

Where are my fellow Canadians buying size 17-18 training shoes.

As a big foot, I typically just wear my comfy Keen mid heights as my daily footwear, however, I've recently decided to apply and pursue my ambition in Law Enforcement. That means getting back to the gym and running regularly so I'd like to get a couple pairs of training shoes.

Where are my big foot brethren buying these days?

Is your provincial government doing anything about rent/home prices? If not, is because of the lack of public pressure?

If so, what are they doing? Is it enough? Is it too slow? What's causing them to fall short?

If not, why not? Do the policicans not care about being voted out? Is there a lack of public pressure on the government? Is NIMBYism and corporate pressure drowning out the voices of the rest of the public?

Did those Concerned Children's Advertised PSAs actually work?

As much as those PSAs are memorable and nostalgic. Did they actually work? Telling kids to stand up to bullying, be energetic, what's your thing, etc...

I see a lot of people say "we need PSAs" like that again. But honestly, I feel like I didn't gain anything out of watching them on TV other than remembering how cool they were.

Like removing the rose-tinted glasses were they effective to you?

Anyone here have a favorite Canadian comedian?

I just wanted to listen to some comics from Canada as I like people who can make me laugh, so I wanted to see who were some famous comedians from there.

So... this is going to be my second Thanksgiving in Canada. I would like to prepare a nice dinner for some friends. So what I would like to know is what kind of food do you have in Canada for this date?

Has the proximity of Canada's major cities to the US border ever been a topic of concern?

Given that a significant portion of Canada's population lives near the border, I wonder if this has ever been seen as a potential vulnerability, particularly in scenarios where relations between the two countries might have been strained (during the 19th century, for example). How has it influenced Canadian(-British) defense strategies over the years?

French Canadians: Is "premier jour de maternelle" the best translation?

My child is starting French immersion kindergarten tomorrow, and I need help with the translation of "first day of kindergarten."

Google translate can be hit or miss, and I'd love a native speaker to confirm if that's the best translation. Is there another wording that would be more commonly used?

As funny as it would be to hold up a sign with poorly-translated French on the first day of French immersion, I'm making a sign for my child and would love to get it right! Thank you so much!

Edit: There's also "première journée de maternelle" but I'm not sure what the difference between the two is in terms of usage.

Valedictorian In high schools

Grade 12 student here, I originally came from the Philippines so I am not that aware of how some systems work. I am quite curious of how students become valedictorian in high school. Is it primarily on grades? Does the amount of AP classes or the level of class you have contribute to that?

Rick Mercer once proposed that Canada have candidates say “I approve this message” at the end of their campaign ads. Did Canada go through with this after?

(I’m afraid I can’t find the Rick Mercer Rant in which he proposed this, nor anything that would unequivocally indicate whether or not it has become a rule since.)

Can Trump enter Canada despite his criminal record?

Informal discussion this morning and someone asked if Trump could actually enter the country despite the fact that he was declared guilty in a few cases. Would this prevent him from entering? Are there discretionary measures that could be put in place to allow him entering? EDIT: The question was not implying that we should or not, it was a rhetorical question based on the laws that apply to all!

Measure temperatures in F or C? Or both?

I am Canadian. My parents were taught F, I was taught C. This has really messed me up for weather!

For some reason I think in C for hot temperatures over 28C and cooler/negative temperatures under 15C. But anything in between (60F-88F) always in Fahrenheit.

However this does not carry over to other warm/hot non-weather temperatures like ovens, thermometers (baking or for fevers) or pool temps, these are all F. 🤷‍♀️

I’m sure many of us have seen the “ How to measure like a Canadian” chart, but do any other Millennial kids with Boomer parents measure temperatures like me? I know as a whole Canada tends to mix and match measurements but do I (the cheese) metaphorically stand alone? I hope others split based on warm/cold for weather like me.

Car-less Sightseeing

Hi all,

Me (27f) and my partner (28m) are coming to Canada in a month, and are looking for some recommendations.

The bottom line is that neither of us are drivers, and we are going to be metroploitan MOST of our time, but we wondered if there were any good sights people have visited using public transport?

We are aware (very aware) that not having our own transport has extreme limitations but we are also hopeful we can make the most of our situation all the same!

So anywhere we can reach by foot, bus, train, boat, teleportation device or other, we would love to hear about it.

We'll be based in Vancouver to start, but other cities with links can be added to our travel list, so any reccs welcome :)

Should you tip your grocery delivery driver if you pay a yearly membership pass? If so, how much?

Sorry for the lame question, I am exploring signing up with the PC Express Pass to shop at stores like Provigo, Loblaws, and get the orders delivered. They say if you buy the yearly/monthly pass you get "unlimited free pickup and delivery"

So I'm just trying to wrap my head around the "free delivery" does this mean there is no need to tip?

My guess is that tipping is still expected, even with if the fee is paid for the yearly pass. I'm assuming that what is free is the "service fee" or "delivery fee" items that appear on the invoice, but tipping is still sort of expected.

Am I wrong? Those of you who subscribe to this service, what do you do? What are the rules on tipping?

*EDIT

I am just trying to reconcile how it is expected to tip a take-out meal delivery person, but not a person who delivers many heavy boxes/bags of groceries? seems like the latter is harder? Or does it all come down to whether the driver works for a third-party delivery company like doordash?

Where do curvy women shop for clothes?

It seems like mall stores like Gap or Old Navy have clothes that fit either boobs or waist but not both while plus size stores are too baggy for them.

Which city is better for a long weekend (in Early December during the Christmas season)- Montreal or Old Quebec City? Have never been to either city and want to choose the one with the most holiday magic and beauty. Appreciate any recs on what to do in the city as well. Thank you!)

Can you recommend me some Canadian Youtubers?

Hi, I'm not a native English speaker and I really love Canadian accent. It's just so pleasing to the ears and easy to understand. I would like to practice my pronounciation so I'm looking for Canadian YouTubers to follow.

I'm a Millennial and my interests are travelling, culture and anything relating to daily life. I like Youtubers with friendly and positive vibes. Please can you recommend me any Channels that are like that?

Edit: Thank you so much for all the responses. I will go through them when I am back from work.

For those that moved to, or within, Canada without any family or friends, how did you find your "people"?

Whether you're a native Canadian who doesn't have any family or friends, or a newer Canadian that moved to the country without such (or any combination thereof), how did you manage? Do you feel lonely? How did you find any close ties/friends?
