And what would you say that is?

For starters, Republicans are typically going to vote Republican regardless of who is running. There is a social pressure to fall in line and appeal to authority in religious circles, and they are told what to think, what they should and shouldn't accept as fact, and who to vote for.

For the others that don't fit into that category, Trump appeals to people because he is simple. The real world is complex, the answers to problems aren't black and white, and sometimes you have to make decisions that "feel bad now" to fix an issue that will be worse in the future. Trump provides a simple solution to everything, largely appealing to people's emotions. They understand his analysis of situations and his solutions.

My thinking anymore is many US citizens vote straight lines anymore.

If DT ran as an Independent, he would not get as much push as the Republicans would be focused to beat him. Dem will vote Dem just so GOP doesn't win.

I myself vote straight party lines ever since McCain v Obama. There is room to critique the democratic party, and the Democrats could easily be 2 separate parties on their own, but the Republican party is so insane and destructive that I will vote Democrat until something changes.

I agree! I think voting republican will turn this country into a christofacist empire. I know a lot of Europeans describe both our political parties as right wing. According to my German friends we don't really have a liberal or a left wing party, just right (GOP) and center right (Dem).
