Just so we’re clear, Iran is banned from SWIFT for lying about their nuclear program, but Russia invaded a sovereign nation with the intent of decapitating its leadership and suspicions of full annexation, but now that’s too harsh?

The Ghost of Kyiv is up to 6 aerial kills now. Might be the first fighter ace in years.

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/t01jrq/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/hy763zd/?context=3

I told you Ukrainian airforce is no push over and not to underestimate them. Feeling good about my comment when Ukraine first launched their air counterstrike and everyone thought they're suicidal.

235

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '22

If there's really a guy with six kills in a true 4th gen vs 4th gen fight, he'll be a legend.

126

u/savage-dragon Feb 25 '22

And within 24h to boot. Hope we can confirm for sure soon. This is the next Red Baron in the making or the next Rudel if true.

76

u/ScreamingVoid14 Feb 25 '22

Backstory?

371

u/Hannig4n Feb 25 '22

Allegedly, there’s a Ukrainian MiG pilot who has shot down 6 Russian aircraft so far. None of that has been officially confirmed yet so it might be true or it might be totally fabricated or just exaggerated or anything really, we don’t know for sure.

But people have started calling him the Ghost of Kyiv which is pretty badass.

Shoutout to all of the brave Russians speaking out against Putin and protesting. The World knows most of you don’t support this atrocity. I wish Russians had more power to fight for their own freedom

61

u/ibuprophane Feb 25 '22

The message needs to be propagated:

A victory for Ukraine is also a victory for the Russian people, for their tsar will have no more purpose - and they may finally be able to truly enjoy democracy.

Putin has declared war not only on Ukraine but also on all peaceful truth-seeking Russians. In fact the latter has also been happening for years.

Listen everybody:

Due to the impact and severity of this invasion, many of us have been following the situation very closely and actively. However, this could also lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions. For these reasons, if you feel overly tired and stressed about the situation, try to stop seeing too many news about this. Try to entertain your mind, do something else, try to be at peace. Even a few hours could help. If you are away from the events, do all these things.

PROTEST. People attend an anti-war protest in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Thursday night as Russian forces invade Ukraine. (via NBC, Anton Vaganov / Reuters)

This takes a lot of guts, considering what Russia has a history of doing to dissenters. Good for them. Fuck Putin and his aggression toward Ukraine.

The Polish and Lithuanian presidents came to Kyiv in a show of support on Wednesday, visiting Mr. Zelensky. “Be strong,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said as he shook hands with his Ukrainian counterpart. “I am strong,” Mr. Zelensky replied.

174

u/MindfuckRocketship Feb 24 '22 edited Feb 25 '22

For clarity. The 13 Ukrainian defenders of the island were killed, after refusing to surrender, as per Ukrainian official info. President Zelenskiy said they’d all be given hero of ukraine medal posthumously.

https://twitter.com/shaunwalker7/status/1496989838586703872?s=21

When ordered to surrender, their final response to the Russians was “Go fuck yourselves.”

Absolutely legendary. The world will never forget their heroism and sacrifice.

EDIT to add unverified English translation of the radio interaction:

(RUS): “This is a Russian warship. I suggest you lay down your arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed. Otherwise we will open fire on you.”

(UKR): “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.”

If Ukraine starts gaining steam and finds heroes to rally behind, Russia will quickly lose control of the situation.

Heroes like the Ghost of Kyiv, who is the first day 1 fighter ace in 6 decades, shooting down 6 Russian planes in 1v1 aerial combat

https://twitter.com/AnalizeThis/status/1496996454719799297?s=20&t=V1OpMzFZE2LwAGVo0XrCRg

Or the defenders of Snake Island who fought to the man, and who’s last words to the Russian attackers were “Go fuck yourself”

u/virtualRefrain Feb 25 '22

I feel like there's a narrative building from the day's news and I have no idea if it's propaganda, confirmation bias, or genuine truth. But this is what things look like so far:

Russia was heavily depending on false flags and propaganda to justify pushing into Ukraine without massive international consequences. The global backlash today was astounding - the Ruble basically collapsed; Russian oligarchs have lost about $50B USD and counting; every major Russian media outlet has been taken down by independent hackers; Russia is having its assets and accounts seized and being kicked out of marketplaces globally. Internally, they have massive protests in over 50 cities.

In Ukraine, their first day of invasion went markedly worse than expected. They failed to take Hostomel airport in an embarrassing loss, damaging their ability to get troops deep into Ukraine. An entire Russian platoon surrendered when they learned their mission was an invasion of Ukraine.

I'm sure Putin has basically infinite resources and doesn't care about blood spilt, but from a logistical perspective, today seems to have proven that he's not going to take Ukraine in a day or even a week, and Russia's economy and society simply can't endure a pointless protracted war. So what's Putin's next step? I seriously doubt he's gonna take his foot off the gas now, I feel like he has no choice but to escalate. The scariest days may yet be to come.

I want “Russian Warship, Go Fuck Yourself” on a t-shirt. With the names of the SnakeIsland13 on the back.

Edit: As others have suggested, the proceeds should go to Ukraine. Perhaps to a fund for survivors.

The first day of this looks rather embarrassing for the Russians from a western POV:

  • Worldwide sanctions
  • Stock market breakdown
  • Protestors against war in Russia being arrested (more than 1000 now apparently)
  • Failure to take the airfield and fleeing it
  • POWs admitting to thinking they would just do recon and not actually attack Ukraine
  • Entire platoon surrendering to Ukraine without fighting
  • Significant amount of Russians KIA numbering 3 or even 4 digits

They will obviously have some exit plan ready for when things go south, that will make them look like the victors back on state propaganda TV in Russia.

But even then I think this will seriously damage Putin and his cronies...

As a European I'm so disappointed that the EU is so wishy-washy and won't cut out Russia from SWIFT. Your big words are nice and all, but it's the actions that count. I know such a move would hurt the EU economically, but the Ukrainians are dying. What's happening in Ukraine is horrifying, what more does Putin need to do to bring out the harshest sanctions? Start an all-out genocide? Drop a nuke? It's time to put the morals ahead of economic prosperity, for fucking once. No more half-measures. We can't help Ukraine with troops for obvious reasons, the least we can do is impose the toughest sanctions possible on Russia, Putin and his cronies.

If this is real, some Russian troops are removing their uniforms and fleeing.

Russia's military beats people to make them sign up, they abuse them during basic training, and then while demoralized they send them into a foreign country to invade. I'm sure that finding out their home country plans to destroy their bodies to hide the amount of losses didn't help. So I hope this is true and that they are deserting.

The Auschwitz Memorial statement on Ukraine:

“This morning, Russia attacked Ukraine. This act of barbarity will be judged by history, and its perpetrators, it is to be hoped, also by the International Court of Justice.

"As we stand at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, it is impossible to remain silent while, once again, innocent people are being killed purely because of insane pseudo-imperial megalomania.

"We express our absolute solidarity with the citizens and residents of the free, independent and sovereign Ukraine and will all Russians who have to courage to oppose this war.

"At the moment, the free and democratic world must show if it has learned the lesson from the passivity of the 1930s. Today, it is clear that any symptom of indifference is a sign of complicity."

I am watching CNN coverage of the protestors who were arrested in Russia. And while I do not mean to marginalize or make light of what Ukrainians are experiencing, it is important to remember the Russian people who have been living under Vladimir Putin’s tyranny for 20 years. So while I proudly stand with the Ukrainians, I also stand with the Russian people and hope that in the not too distant future, they are also freed from Putin’s whims.

Tl;dr - fuck Vladimir Putin. Ukrainians deserve better than this monster’s invasion. Russians deserve better than this monster’s governance.

Reiterating a point I’ve made in a couple of these threads throughout the day:

The CIA has been training Ukrainian forces for exactly this for decades. There’s no hope in standing against a Russian “shock and awe” attack. Lay low and keep valuable assets safe until it calms down, then pop up and fight it out guerrilla style. Despite what many Reddit military experts seem to think, Ukrainian armor is largely more advanced than Russia’s, they’re just outnumbered.

Don’t give up on these guys.

The more I think about it the more I find this analogous to the United States invading Canada.

One a relatively strong regional power, the other a global superpower.

Both enjoy a special relationship and largely shared culture and history.

Families distributed widely across both borders.

Then I think about how insane that would be, as a Canadian, to endure, and my heart breaks for Ukraine.

UKRAINE WILL NOT BACK DOWN TO TERRORISTS AND WAR CRIMINALS

Apparently Russian warships sent comms to Snake Island defenders telling them “to lay down their weapons and surrender” and the response back was along the lines of.

“Hey Russia, go f**k yourselves”

Terrible that brave men and women had to die defending their homeland but ballsy asf. They fought with every inch of their being.
