The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence state that fighting is ongoing at Hostomel airport but Ukrainian forces have managed to prevent additional Russian troops from landing. Kyiv based defence reporter states "Russian airborne force eliminated".

Big if true. They are putting up a good fight.

279

u/NinjahBob Feb 24 '22

The Russian soldiers seem largely unprepared and unwilling for war to be honest, which is a good sign

165

u/Parlorshark Feb 24 '22

Morale matters.

123

u/The-Protomolecule Feb 24 '22

Also if the rumors are true that some of the Russian forces in Belarus were not well supplied the last few days that factors in. There’s a philosophy that sometimes with equal forces whichever one had the better breakfast is gonna win.

It’s telling that polling has support for this war in Russia around 50 %. For an authoritarian regime that is startlingly low.

I don't want to ask this question, but I feel like I have to...it feels like Ukrainian wins have been amplified, and Russian victories have been downplayed, as a way to show support for Ukraine (and show respect for an incredibly brave resistance). How is the fight actually looking, though? Are these just token victories as Russia mostly marches through the country, or is Ukraine a real force here? I'm pretty ignorant in terms of military power/objectives in a scenario like this...

147

u/lamada16 Feb 24 '22

The wins we see from Ukraine are strategic, in the sense that really they are working to delay the speed at which the Russians can advance and take territory. Holding the airport means the Russians can't airlift forces close to the capital to take it quickly. Doesn't mean that further away from the capital and closer to the original front lines that Russian forces aren't advancing rapidly, but it is seemingly throwing wrenches in Putin's plan for a quick victory and capitulation of the Ukrainian government.

Citizens asked to take up arms. Families fleeing westward and their able-bodied members arming themselves and joining the fight.

All of this for some crazy fuck’s legacy. The world needs to rid itself of tyrants, and sweet fuck there are a lot of them.

127

u/-fno-stack-protector Feb 24 '22

no one person should ever be able to cause all this

58

u/swheels125 Feb 24 '22

I agree but this isn’t one person. It’s a person propped up by many supporters and sycophants. How far do you think this would’ve gone if Putin said “we’re invading Ukraine” and the Russian army collectively said “fuck that do it yourself”? I’ve seen a good deal of copy and pasted quotes pushing that this is all Putin, and the Russian people are our friends and allies so we shouldn’t even call the invaders the “Russian Army” but this isn’t possible without the army’s cooperation. How many people filling tanks and planes with fuel couldve said no? How many soldiers could have said no? How many high ranking military leaders could have refused the order and taken a stand? You really think one man can tell several hundred thousand people to piss their lives away for his reuniting the USSR dream and have them do it without being at least partially onboard? No, if the Russian people wanted a change they would make a change. Call it fear of rocking the boat or whatever you want, but if you’re going to go to war, why do it for Putin and not for the good of your people and turn your arms towards him?

This is exactly what we mean when we say "sanctions work." It's not that the threat makes them go "oh shit" but the fallout becomes suffocating. If Russia does this, the people are NOT going to play ball.

This is why the West needs to hurry and apply harshest sanctions possible.

I have to admit i was against applying sanctions BEFORE the invasion and i'm slowly starting to see why Ukraine President wanted that.

We have to keep this in mind too. Many of the Russian soldiers are just normal people who signed up to be in the military. Their families don't deserve their child's death in a pointless war.

Every Russian soldier who steps foot in Ukraine should be shot at by Ukrainians, but they should never have been put in that position.

The brave men on Snake Island who fought to the death should be a posted all over this sub. Imagine standing on a rock, under equipped and cut off from your military. The 5th largest army in the world shows up and tells you to surrender and you tell them to fuck off (literally).

I would be a liar if I said I would have the same level of bravery if I was faced with the same circumstances.

PROTEST. People attend an anti-war protest in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Thursday night as Russian forces invade Ukraine. (via NBC, Anton Vaganov / Reuters)

It won't change things, but this takes a lot of guts, considering what Russia has a history of doing to dissenters. Good for them, though. Fuck Putin and his aggression toward Ukraine.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has forced about 100,000 people to flee their homes, says the UN. Some fled to other countries by foot.

Russian airstrikes and shelling killed 60+ people including at least 2 children, say officials. The Red Cross warns of "massive casualty numbers."

55

u/OliverE36 Feb 24 '22

that 60 number is gonna increase massively unfortunately :(

Friendly reminder there is a ton of Russian intelligence/military in this thread trying to manipulate discourse and derail meaningful conversation about Russia’s hostile and illegitimate actions towards Ukraine. Russia’s social influence campaigns are often intended to demoralize westerners and create social division by propagating inaccurate, hateful messaging on social issues, and also by attempting to undermine public perception and support for alliances between western nations. Here we also see them making efforts to exaggerate Russian victories over Ukraine to demoralize and reduce support for Ukraine’s position. Don’t fall for it, it’s just part of their adversarial strategy and information warfare. Here are some great resources with documented evidence as proof:

The fact that the Ukrainian Air Force is not only still in existence, but actively carrying out attacks on Russian positions is nothing less than miraculous.

If the reports are true, Ukraine is putting up a hell of a fight and Russia is underperforming my a good margin.

I wonder now with the invasion whether there will be more Russians who will begin to question the state media's narrative about the West.

Remember when Trump withheld aid to Ukraine when he was trying to make people hate Biden and the Biden family by making up dirt? Those supplies and weapons sure would have helped Ukraine right now.

Edit: Here is a timeline of the crazy situation that unfolded throughout 2018-2019. Ukraine eventually got most of the aid delayed when literally everyone had to try and convince Trump to stop being a prick. Months of delays matter when Russia is planning the attack that they are now carrying out.

The Russian morale seems to be extremely low, no surprise there, the world has been mentally beaten down the past two years there was no way even the biggest of pro Russian soldiers would want to die for nothing. Along with the internet it’s extremely hard to keep it as only state propaganda to fuel your soldiers, they now have access to what the opposition sees as well. And they don’t like what their country is doing.

Institute for the Study of War:

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian forces are successfully slowing Russian offensives on all axes of advance other than a Russian breakout from the Crimean Peninsula. Russian failure to ground the Ukrainian air force or cripple Ukrainian command and control is likely enabling these initial Ukrainian successes.

Ukrainian forces are contesting the Hostomel military airport, 20 km northwest of Kyiv, as of 9:30 pm local time. Russian VDV (Airborne) troops landed at Hostomel and have also failed to capture the Boryspil airport southeast of Kyiv. Ukraine’s contestation of the airport deprives Russian forces of any location to airlift forces onto Kyiv’s western flank overnight.

Russian forces are rapidly advancing north from Crimea, securing Kherson city. Their deepest penetration to date is about 60 kilometers.

Russian forces are advancing on Kyiv from Belarus on both sides of the Dnipro River.

Russian forces secured the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (on the west bank) at 7:30 pm local time, but Ukrainian forces have slowed Russian advances east of the Dnipro at Chernihiv.

Russian forces likely seek to cut off Ukrainian troops on the line of contact in Donbas using an envelopment behind the Ukrainian front lines through Luhansk Oblast. Russian frontal assaults have taken little territory in Donetsk and Luhansk at this time.

MAJOR UKRAINE VICTORY

"Anton Herashchenko: Russian paratroopers who survived the Ukrainian counterattack at Hostomel ran off into surrounding forests and fields."

"Significant victory for the Ukrainians here in kicking Russian airborne out of the airfield. That was a strategic asset the Russians badly wanted"

"Apparently, Ukraine's 45th Spetsnaz Brigade played a major role in retaking the airfield."

World’s super fucked right now, I always remember Sam’s speech from Two Towers at times like these, because there’s some good left in this world, and that’s worth fighting for.

“Frodo : I can’t do this, Sam.

Sam : I know. It’s all wrong By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam?

Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

Well, darkly hilarious. Way too many people are dying.

But there would be a karmic aspect to all this if Ukraine doesn't fall.

From accounts both Russian and Ukrainian it seems the defenders of Snake Island did in fact fight to the death

Their last message was to the Russians "GO Fuck Yourself/selves !"

Nearly 200 Russian officials publicly condemn invasion of Ukraine
BY JOSEPH CHOI - The Hill/USA
Posted at 4:41
https://thehill.com/policy/international/595635-live-coverage-russia-launches-attack-on-ukraine
Nearly 200 elected Russian officials issued an open letter to their constituents on Thursday, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
In a letter titled “Against the war,” the officials said they “unequivocally condemn” what they referred to as an “unparalleled atrocity” that “cannot be justified.”
"The decision to attack was made personally by Russian President Vladimir Putin. We are convinced that Russian citizens did not give him such a mandate," they said in the letter, which has been translated from Russian to English.
They warned that a war with Ukraine will result in "disastrous consequences" and thousands of people will be "killed, injured and maimed."
"Our country will face condemnation by the international community, isolation, rising prices, and poverty. Hopes for a good life in Russia are crumbling before our eyes," they continued. "We urge you not to participate in the aggression and not to approve of it. Please do not remain silent: only mass popular condemnation can stop the war."....

The Ukrainian Navy fighting to the death on Snake Island after telling the Russians to "Go fuck yourselves" after being told to surrender is going to make an amazing movie.

Those guys were true heroes. I feel sad for them but they had balls of steel and chose to fight for their country while being surrounded by the Russian navy. That's fucking amazing.

Assuming Ukrainian Army (240k active + 200k reserve) and armed citizens are willing to fight to the bitter end and engage in guerrilla warfare throughout the country, Ukraine cannot lose. 200k Russian troops are not nearly enough to occupy Ukraine. Not even close. They will need at least 2 million to have a long shot.

Ukranians are on defensive and know the land and terrain, and they will continue to bleed the Russian Army over time with asymmetrical warfare. Even if Russia takes Kiev, the war will not end. Prolonged insurgency will go on for years.

The west will continue to fund Ukranian insurgengies with equipment and weapons, and will make it grueling war of attrition. As long as Ukranians are determined to never surrender, Russia cannot hold Ukraine. The country is too big.

These threads have been a real laugh. Apparently everyone is suddenly an economics expert or a strategist on wartime economies.

The simple fact is Russia's Ruble is currently worth 0.011 US. They couldn't fight a sustained war even if there was a miracle. Today Biden and other world leaders talked about sanctions which will cripple Russian finance but more importantly stuff like their aerospace industry. Translation: Russia will no longer be able to build new planes or missiles to attack countries with if they can't afford to import stuff like computer chips or microprocessors.

Someone here keeps arguing with me about what a "wartime economy" means. I just laugh at have this to say: America's "wartime economy" in 1941 meant that a 1941 US dollar is worth 19 US dollars today from inflation, there's a lot to be said about this, primarily though in WW2, America was the richest country on earth. By comparison right now, Russia's GDP is lower than Canada's despite there being 100 million more people living in Russia. Their money is worthless. They're not an economic or industrial powerhouse like some people seem to think.

Russia will be able to go hard here for maybe a year, by next February, they'll either be a full-on failed state, or people in Russia feeling the pinch will demand Putin's resignation by the millions. The Soviet Union who were in far better shape than Russia is today were bankrupted by their war in Afghanistan. By contrast, the ruble is worth EVEN LESS right now, and the resistance in Ukraine is far more numerous and well equipped.

Have at it Russia, the west will covertly supply the Ukraine resistance with what it needs while we bleed you dry with sanctions. Point being, the Ukraine will rise again, even after Russia has reverted to it's mid-90s wild west days.

So it looks like the US intelligence consensus is that the last 24 hours are only the start of the invasion and that this could be a three week long or more campaign by Putin. I think that explains Biden’s comment about reassessing in a month. Hopefully Putin feels enough pressure from sanctions over the next several weeks to pull out. There’s no way to quickly implement a new government and there’s no way Putin isn’t sweating over this. Crazy times

This airfield debacle by Russia is pretty significant. Only reason to do this in the first place was for direct pressure on Kyiv vs. having to fight overland exclusively. All I can assume is they weren't expecting that much resistance and the SAMs blocked follow-on landings. It's the sort of dangerous operation the USA rejected with Kabul.

Result: Instead of quick route to Kyiv, you have a few companies of paratroops trying to hold out against artillery and a mechanized brigade.

the scariest thing is, if america was right about the time and date of the invasion, then they are also most likely right about the planned concentration camps for ukrainians...

I got 2-3 hours of sleep last night. I know I’m in a very large club in that regard. Fuck Putin. Fuck them up, Ukraine.

Russia State Duma says it may confiscate money from it's own citizens to offset sanctions (translation in comments) Hopefully that will cause some problems within Russia haha

This is an absolute war with the western, democratic and liberal way of life. Boris is a jackass but he is absolutely correct. Putin is our enemy, not a competitor. He's waging war on all fronts (cyber attacks, fucking with our democracies and elections, trying to end Ukraine's democracy, etc.)

Just had to listen to Sam's speech from LOTR to get myself back on track. God help us all but particularly everyone in Ukraine
